In part one of this in-depth conversation with Petra founder, Bob Hartman, we talk about Bob's early influences and the guitarists that captured his attention as a young musician. Bob talks about his faith journey and the bands he played in before founding Petra. As we work our way through Petra's style adaptation, we dig into the challenges of writing for a new audience. Bob share some of the major struggles Petra endured over the years and how the band almost hung up their instruments at the end of the Volz era.   There is much great Petra history covered in this episode, so share it with your friends who love Petra.    With over 3 million podcasts in existence, being an independent podcaster is VERY challenging, especially for a non-celebrity like me. James Horner composed music for over 160 films during the course of his remarkable career. Among his many works are music scores for some of the biggest films in Hollywood history, like Avatar and Titanic, and epic films such as Braveheart and Glory. But beyond all of the big movies; beyond the multiple Oscars, Grammys, Golden Globes and countless other awards, was a quiet and private man who was quirky and complex. No one knew James better than his wife, Sara Horner. In this exclusive interview, Sara helps us to see James in a way that no one else can. We are escorted into the home and the world that James grew up in during our conversation. We learn how James' father, Harry, played a significant part of shaping James into the man he would become. Sara shares about James' work routine, his work ethic, and describes what the ride was like as James journeyed from a young composer working on small student films, to becoming one of the most successful and famous composers in History. If you are a fan of James Horner, there is no doubt that you will learn much through this wonderful conversation.  A very special thank you to the lovely Sara Horner, for her time and insights. She was a delight to speak with and this conversation will remain as one I will treasure.  If you enjoyed this chat with Sara Horner and know of others who might as well, please share it, leave a kind review or rating. Following wherever you are listening is very helpful for an indie podcaster like myself.   Copyright Notification:  Podcast theme song "Arise and Shine" written by Chris Taylor. Used by permission. Bryan shares his thoughts as he looks back at the time when he was in the upper echelon of the CCM world. Grammy Award winning songwriter and vocalist Bryan Duncan has had a 50+ year career that began in the Jesus Movement. His seminole group, The Sweet Comfort Band, helped launch modern CCM. After going solo in the mid 1980s, Bryan's soulful vocals, songwriting skills and fun personality, helped him to reach the upper echelon in the CCM world. In this in-depth two-part conversation, Bryan and I cover the earliest of days inside the Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa tent, all the way through to what he's doing today.  Bryan's honesty and dry wit made for a truly interesting conversation filled with insights gained by man who has the gift of being able to look back at where he's been. Bryan's music has been deeply meaningful to me for over 40 years, often bringing solace and comfort at just the right time. I am grateful for this other Bryan with a Y.  Part 2 will be released on Monday September 1, 2024. Bryan shares his thoughts as he looks back at his long career, and much more. AND there is a surprise appearance by the one and only Phil Keaggy with a special message for Bryan!  If you enjoy these meaningful and insightful conversations with artists like this one with Bryan, please share them with others. Thank you so much for listening to a simple guy who loves music and the people who make it.  This episode is dedicated to my wonderful son, Luke, who turns 19 today. I love you so much, Pally!! Jenn Franklin is an indie artist that everyone needs to hear. Simply put, Jenn is one of the best indie songwriters and vocalists I have come across since I have been hosting Journey to the Stage. With a powerful voice trained in Rock bands, Jenn can bring a great sense of strength to a song. Along with that potency, Jenn has spent considerable time behind the piano crafting songs that are filled with vulnerability and contemplation, sung with a quiet passion. With her vocal ability paired with a deep sense of melody and lyric creation, Jenn embodies all the elements of a great artist. In this delightful conversation, we chat about Jenn's journey as an artist which started before she sang in a biker bar at age 12. We spend time talking about her brand new album, "Truth About Monsters" and play an incredible song titled "As Far As You Go." Jenn Franklin a great artist to back. Peter, Paul and Mary, the iconic folk trio of the 1960s, achieved remarkable success and left an indelible mark on the American music landscape and social conscience. With their rich and unforgettable harmonies and lyrics that led the charge for societal change, they became the voice of a generation, producing timeless hits like "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Leaving on a Jet Plane." Their influence extended beyond music, contributing significantly to the Civil Rights and Anti-War movements of the era. Following the group's disbandment, Noel Paul Stookey embarked on a solo career, where he continued to enchant audiences with his poignant songwriting and soulful performances. His solo work, characterized by its spiritual and introspective themes, further solidified his reputation as a distinguished and impactful artist in the folk music genre. In this most memorable conversation, Noel and I cover the span of his life, from learning what harmony is by singing as a child with his father, through the highs of Peter, Paul, and Mary, to his wonderful solo career. The highlight is being treated to a special performance of "Wedding Song (There is Love)"   Noel is one of my musical heroes, whose voice has been part of my life for as long as I could remember, and it was a great honor to have such a delightful conversation with him.   If you enjoy these meaningful and insightful conversations with artists, please share them with others. Over the last 20+ years, Emmy Award winning composer Bear McCreary has created a beautiful, powerful and impressive body of work that spans across media forms. With sprawling musical diversity, Bear has composed for video games, television and film, becoming one of the most sought-after composers in Hollywood.  Bear's credits include "The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power," "The Walking Dead," "Battlestar Galactica (2004)," "Agents of SHIELD," and countless more.  In this in-depth interview, Bear and I talk about his earliest days, falling in love with the music of movies at age 5. We spend considerable time discussing a teenage Bear's chance meeting with film music pillar, Elmer Bernstein, and how that meeting would change Bear's life forever. We ended our time talking about Bear's debut Rock concept album, "The Singularity." This powerhouse album features musical greats like Slash, Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Rufus Wainwright, Corey Taylor (Slipknot), and many more. As a natural-born storyteller, Bear began writing segments of the story as a teen. "The Singularity" is available on all streaming platforms. A heartfelt thank you to Bear for his time and the wonderful and insightful conversation. A special thank you to Joe Augustine and Marisa Gunzenhauser from Spark & Shadows for greenlighting and logistical help to make my chat with Bear possible.  A great way to support artists and composers is to purchase their works. In this exclusive one-on-one interview with Dirty Loops bassist extraordinaire, Henrik Linder, we cover a lot of musical terrain. Henrik and I chat about his development as a musician who started on piano at age 4 through today as Henrik has become known for his great skill and innovation on the bass. Our conversation was filled with Dirty Loops history, working with Cory Wong, tour life, the writing process in the band and we do a breakdown of the band's latest single, "Run Away," something that will not be found anywhere else. If you are a fan of Dirty Loops and the great music they make, you will enjoy this insightful and wide-ranging interview.  A HUGE thank you to Jonah Nilsson, Aron Mellergad, and Henrik Linder for allowing me to include clips of "Run Away" in the edisode. Thank you to band manager David Sunnerfors for his great professionalism and helping to make this happen. This may be the debut album of the Staudt Brothers, but these Texas gents are musical veterans. Their new album, "Livewire Priest," is filled with songs that are road tested and built on a foundation of memorable hooks, gritty guitars, powerhouse vocals, and a rhythm section that is taking no prisoners. Produced by fellow-Texans Zack Kibodeaux, Greg Essington and Kyle Smith of Blue Water Highway, "Livewire Priest" is stirring up some Texas dust and is an album that needs to be heard.  This chat with Caleb Staudt (lead vocals, guitar, and principal songwriter) and David Stockton (bass, goat harmonizer. True story) was a blast and a half. Blue Water Highway's Zack Kibodeaux makes an (almost) surprise appearance to talk about working with the band in the studio. Jonathan Dinklage is a world class violinist and violist who has recorded and toured with some of the biggest and most talented artists of our time- with names like David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga and many more. His dream gig was being invited to tour with RUSH as part of the band's string ensemble for their Clockwork Angels tour. We chat about being the lead violinist on Broadway's HAMILTON and explore the origin story of Jonathan, including being raised in a home that launched Jonathan's and his brother, actor Peter Dinklage's careers. We spend the bulk of our time talking about his time touring with RUSH. Jonny gives us an insight into that tour and working closely with RUSH, like few others can. We had a surprise appearance by Jonathan's sweet little girl at the end of our chat, which topped of our chat wonderfully. A big thank you to Jonathan for sharing his story with me. Salt of the Sound have been making some of the most beautiful music I've come across in the last several years. The husband and wife duo, Ben and Anita Tatlow, continue to create music for prayer, contemplation, worship and meditation. In this conversation that is near to my heart, Anita shares about the musical and life journey they have been on. Touched by a period of heartache and uncertainty, some of the most personal and hope-filled music The Salt of the Sound has made, finds itself on their latest album, "For All the Moments in Between." From that beautiful album comes a song we feature in our discussion, "Kyrie Eleison," as song with a deep story. I hope and pray this conversation will give all who hear, a reminder of God's mercy and grace.   To keep up with all things Salt of the Sound, click here: https://saltofthesound.com/ To buy music, become a supporter etc., click here: https://saltofthesound.bandcamp.com/ Like them on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/saltofthesound Follow them on Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/saltofthesound Follow on Twitter/X: http://www.twitter.com/saltofthesound Journey to the Stage with Bryan Frazier is an indie and self-financed podcast that was created to tell the stories of great artists, legends, and indie artists from across, styles, genres and eras. In this final segment of my extensive conversation with singer/songwriter Steve Wynn, we spend time talking about The Baseball Project, Steve's upcoming memoir (coming in August 2024), his upcoming solo album (also releasing in August 2024) and the shear power of early Dream Syndicate live performances (and much more!). One thing that has become crystal clear to me since Steve and I spent nearly two hours in conversation in February of 2024, and the relistening to that chat as I edit, is that Steve is an artist with great conviction. By that I mean that Steve has stayed true to his musical integrity, even if it meant the potential loss of dollars. This is rare and should be celebrated.  Steve's autobiography, "I wouldn't say it if it wasn't true" is set to release in August of 2024 and will be available at the usual places, BUT you can get a signed copy on Steve's Bandcamp page by clicking here (after release): https://stevewynn1.bandcamp.com/merch   Keep up with The Dream Syndicate here: https://www.thedreamsyndicate.com/ Stay up-to-date with Steve's solo work here: https://www.stevewynn.net/ --DON'T FORGET STEVE'S NEXT SOLO ALBUM AND MEMIOR COMING IN AUGUST 2024-- And another heartfelt thank you to one of my favorite songwriters, Steve Wynn, for his time and a conversation I will never forget. The Dream Syndicate is one of the few bands that have been a part of starting a new movement in the Rock world. With equal doses of The Velvet Underground, Black Flag, Neil Young and Bob Dylan, The Dream Syndicate helped create what would later be known as Alternative Rock. In this two part conversation, Steve Wynn and I track his personal musical journey, through his first band at 9 years old, all the way through his next solo album coming out this year. Steve and I dig into his earliest musical influences, solo career, his friendship with Long Ryder's guitarist Stephen McCarthy as well as the rocket rise of The Dream Syndicate, the descent and demise of the band, and reforming many years later.  This was a wonderful and genuine conversation filled with great history, insight and candor by one of my favorite songwriters, Steve Wynn. I hope you enjoy it. Part 2 will be released on April 22, 2024, and we spend time talking about the Baseball Project, the shear power of early Dream Syndicate performances and the contrarian nature of their setlists. Emmaline is an artist who can take a song decades old and bring it to life with her magic touch in arranging and sultry vocal delivery. Beyond adding a fresh coat of paint to the great songs of a bygone era, Emmaline writes songs that are fresh and exciting, yet are laced and graced with the feeling of musical nostalgia; songs that will put in a Jazz club of days gone by. In this delightful conversation, Emmaline and I chat about her musical journey and the joys of rearranging songs to create new artistic expressions. There are some bands that when you hear them for the first time, they just stop you in your tracks and draw you in. That's what happened the first time I heard Shannon Clark and the Sugar. I was honored to be joined by Shannon Clark, the bands vocalist and principle songwriter, for a great chat about music, struggle, and life.    Shannon and I talk a bit about the band's history and how personal loss caused this family musical group to walk away from music for a while. With great stories to tell and the ability to tell those stories with heartfelt Americana hooks and blood harmonies, Shannon Clark and the Sugar is a band everyone should have in their listening rotation, proven by the title track from their latest album, "This Old World" that we play during our chat. Malcolm Guite is truly a delight to speak with, which made interviewing him a thing of beauty. In this second and final segment, Malcolm and I converse about the film adaptations of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit books, Malcolm shares one of his own beautiful sonnets, and much, much more.   I hope those who listen will find this insightful and encouraging. If you have not listened to Part 1, you can find that episode on the platform you are listening on now. My interview with Malcolm and the subsequent episodes are dedicated to two friends and fellow laborers in ministry, Samuel Musgrave and Sean Cox. These are men who love beautiful words and beautiful music; men who know a thing or two about a Ring or two.  A special thank you to my dear friend, Phil Keaggy for granting permission to use "When Night Falls" from his wonderful album, "Beyond Nature," an album I fell in love with as a younger man. In this episode I mentioned a book called "The Cotswold Parables" (fully titled "Meeting God in Quite Places: The Cotswold Parables). It is by author F. LaGard Smith, and is a wonderful and recommended read. Pardon my confusion of authorship in the episode.  A personal note from Bryan: With well over three million podcasts in existence today, the world of podcasting is immensely crowded and competitive. If you would take 30 seconds and give a kind rating or leave a nice review, subscribe or follow wherever you listen, it helps push this indie podcast higher up in the algorithm and more people find us. Malcolm Guite is a man of many facets. He is a poet with a deep appreciation for the classical form and higher realms of language. Equal parts songwriter, author, ordained priest in the Church of England, avid reader and academic, Malcolm brings these beautiful colors into one of the most fascinating conversations I have had on my podcast.  Malcolm and I cover a wide range of topics with one of the highlights of this first installment being a reading he does from The Fellowship of the Ring. The longer I spoke to Malcolm, the more I saw in him the affability of Bilbo Baggins, and the wisdom and percipience of Gandalf. I hope all who listen will enjoy this chat as much as I did.  --PART 2 will be released on Monday February 26, 2024. Veteran singer-songwriter Maia Sharp proves once again that she has great songcrafting and storytelling skills with her latest album, "Reckless Thoughts." Maia has written for artists like Trisha Yearwood, Bonnie Raitt and Cher. I first became familiar with Maia's work when she teamed up with Buddy Mondlock to help write and record an album ("Everything Waits to Be Noticed") with legendary vocalist, Art Garfunkel. Maia and I had a great chat about her journey, the twists and turns and struggles as she continues to adapt to the reality of the troubadour life. To top off our conversation, we play a great cut called "Fallen Angel" from her latest album.  Keep up with Maia's tour dates, socials, and news by checking out her website: https://www.maiasharp.com/ Support Maia on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/maiasharp Journey to the Stage with Bryan Frazier is an indie and self-financed podcast that was created to tell the stories of great artists, legends, and indie artists. In this special episode, Sally Stevens and Ron Hicklin give us insight into the creative world of James Horner like very few can. Ron and Sally began working with James in the early 80s as studio vocalists and vocal contractors and their voices can be heard on so many Horner scores like Glory, Apollo 13, Sneakers, Jumanji, Casper, Red Heat, and many more. The stories my guests tell, paint an intimate picture of what it was like to spend countless hours in the studio with James, his work ethic, his perfectionism and his childlike characteristics. Ron Hicklin shares how he became a trusted partner and confidant for James and the bond that they shared. If you are a lover of the works of James Horner, this is a must listen. COMING SOON---- an EXCLUSIVE interview with Sara Horner that is utterly fascinating. Make sure you follow, like or subscribe wherever you’re catching this episode so you don’t miss the release date of that must-hear episode. One of the greatest gifts of being a podcaster has been getting to know Ron Hicklin and Sally Stevens. I am so grateful for both of them, not only for allowing me to help tell their stories, but for the heart they poured into their work for us, and their friendship. Thank you both. This episode is dedicated to two wonderful people- Sally Stevens and Ron Hicklin. To the late James Horner- so many times, as I watch a new movie, I wonder if it would have been you scoring it if you were still with us. Thank you for the gift of so much beautiful and soul-stirring music. You are missed, maestro. Beth Bombara is a wonderfully gifted singer, songwriter, musician and storyteller. While she has drawn comparisons to Aimee Mann and Jewel, she brings her unique voice that paints her songs with authenticity and warmth. Those traits shine brightly in and through the conversation we shared on a Fall afternoon. Along with chatting about her journey as an artist and musician, we dive into her latest album, "It All Goes Up," which is one of the best albums I came across in 2023. We play my favorite song from the album, a wonderful song titled "Electricity." I hope you enjoy this chat with Beth as much as I did. Beth Bombara is the type of artist this podcast loves to help promote and shine the light on.  The album "It All Goes Up" is OUT NOW and is available to stream on all the services. Add the album to your library, listen to it, and if you like, share it with a friend so they can check it out to. That is a HUGE help to our indie artist friends.
