In September 2010, GALLERY CRAWL headed south to interview Steve Dietz, curator of the 2010 01SJ BIENNIAL. Artists from around the globe were commissioned to create new, interactive works of art using the phrase "Build Your Own World" as an inspirational theme.
In September 2010, GALLERY CRAWL interviewed artist Kate Nichols about her work using nanotechnology to create "structural color" for her artwork. We visited Nichols at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where she is the first artist-in-residence.
In August 2010, GALLERY CRAWL took a road trip to Napa, California to view The Hess Collection located in a museum on the Hess Winery properties. The robust collection features emerging artists as well as a wide range of notables, including Robert Rauschenberg, Anselm Kiefer, Andy Goldsworthy, and Francis Bacon.
In July 2010, GALLERY CRAWL interviewed LA-based photographer Shannon Ebner and Bay Area painter Robert Bechtle about their selections for THEY KNEW WHAT THEY WANTED, an exhibition spread across four San Francisco galleries.
In May 2010, GALLERY CRAWL interviewed artists Alexis Arnold, Mercedes Dorame, David Marc Grant, Mimi Moncier, and Jennifer Odell about their own art projects, as well as work created by fellow graduates, Casey Gray, Laura Boles Faw and Luca Antonucci.
In April 2010 GALLERY CRAWL checked out Sonny Smith's 100 RECORDS exhibition at Gallery 16 in San Francisco. We chatted with the artist and musician who invented and wrote 100 songs for a number of fictional musicians and invited fellow artists to create matching album covers.
In March 2010 GALLERY CRAWL checked out Baer Ridgway Exhibitions' new group show PAPER AWESOME and interviewed curator and artist Brion Nuda Rosch. Also on view at the gallery is TEMPORARY STORAGE OVERFLOW PLAN OPTION 3, a hallway installation created with tape and pencil by Bay Area artist Tucker Nichols.
In January 2010 GALLERY CRAWL checked out Amy Casey's new show at Michael Rosenthal Gallery in San Francisco. Casey works with ideas of rebirth and community survival, giving the buildings she paints a relatable, anthropomorphized quality.
In January 2010 GALLERY CRAWL interviewed photographer Katherine Westerhout and her collaborator, Electric Works' digital printmaker Kris Shapiro-Lang to learn more about the process behind Westerhout's latest work in her new exhibition RUST BELT at Electric Works Gallery. Known for exploring inaccessible territory, Westerhout's latest subjects are forgotten buildings in Philadelphia, Buffalo, and Detroit.
In November 2009, GALLERY CRAWL visited the Haines Gallery in San Francisco to interview multi-media artist Kota Ezawa about his exhibition of photographs and works on paper based on the Odessa Steps Sequence from Sergei Eisenstein's THE BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN. With Katya Bonnenfant's HORTENSIA SUITCASE DELUX.
In November 2009, GALLERY CRAWL checked out SPARROW LANE, a series of photographs by Portland artist Holly Andres at the Robert Koch Gallery in San Francisco. Inspired by classic Nancy Drew book covers and Hitchcock films, Andres handcrafts highly-stylized scenes featuring a group of young girls grappling with mysterious objects, secret rooms, forbidden knowledge, and ultimately their own burgeoning sexuality.
In October 2009 GALLERY CRAWL headed to Hatch Galllery in Oakland to interview artists Stephani Martinez and Evan Holm about their new show, PLUME, a collection of mixed-media works, including a wall crawling with buttons, and a painting machine powered by piano keys.
