Key Witness: Aftermath is hosted by broadcast journalist and presenter Daisy Maskell. Each episode of the vodcast sees Daisy sit down with the people closest to the world's most notorious crimes, to uncover the truth that never made the headlines.
But where most true crime shows stop at the verdict, Key Witness: Aftermath goes further. This is a vodcast about what comes next: the grief, the lives permanently altered, and the daily reality of carrying something most people will never understand. David Martin was just 9 years old when his home became a place of fear.
Concerns about his safety had already reached social services, and warning signs were building around the person who was supposed to protect him most.
Then, on November 4, 2010, everything changed.
On the very day a court was due to decide David’s future, something terrifying happened behind closed doors. David was left fighting for his life, and when his school made an unexpected phone call, it triggered a discovery no one was prepared for.
David survived emergency surgery and spent 42 days in hospital. But surviving was only the beginning.
His mother was detained in a psychiatric facility and David was placed with a foster family, leaving him to rebuild a childhood that had been torn apart.
Years later, his mother came back into his life. David hoped confronting the past might finally bring answers. Instead, he was left with questions he still couldn’t resolve, eventually making the decision to cut contact.
Then came another disturbing revelation: a later review raised questions about whether warning signs before the incident had been missed.
Could what happened to David have been prevented? And how do you rebuild your life when the person you should have been safest with becomes the person you fear most?
This is David’s story.
