Description
In each episode, Patrick Hamilton and Gena Radcliffe unpack all the gory details of horror cinema's least discussed topic: the characters. From Friday the 13th to the Evil Dead franchise and beyond, our mission is to detail each hack, slash, and decapitation in the hopes that a victim's untimely end is just the beginning of the jokes we can make about them.

Terror has no shape, but it does have a podcast!! That’s right, we’re returning to Arborville, CA, where Friday nights mean football, flirting, and a hungry mass of space gelatin looking to slurp all the meat it can off the bone in the fantastic 1988 remake of THE BLOB!! Here to help us make sense of all the space madness is director Colin Karwchuk!! [THE JESTER 2 is in theaters for special screenings Sept 15th and 16th via Fathom Events.]
We break it all down, including The Blob’s origin story, why the films are plagued by old teens, mind-bending special make-up effects, worship at the altar of Shawnee Smith, the film’s secret King-coded story, and Frank Darabont and Chuck Russell’s main character problems. All this, plus talking ribbing pleasure, bouncy theme songs, bad dates, concussion protocols, worse wigs, stealth leads, the dangers of recycling, dangerous nostalgia, puffy shirts, Craig Wasson dissing, and a very gelatinous edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! Crawl into every crevice with us for an all-new episode of Kill By Kill!!

Do you remember that one post-Scream, college-set slasher filled with TV pretty 20-somethings and a few horror legend cameos? No? Neither does one of its stars! That’s right, we’re studying up on 1998’s URBAN LEGEND!! (A film that is neither particularly urban nor legendary… discuss) Our student advisor for this episode knows a whole lot about urban legends, creepypastas, and very scary stories, podcaster Jon Grilz (Small Town Horror and Creepy)!! Along the way, we explore the mid-‘90s lineage of slashers that lead up to Urban Legend’s cash-in, open the book on some of the cast’s more colorful backstories, revisit a pitch-perfect example of a “Have you considered my penis?!” boy, and dive into one of the worst cases of “the Tarentinos” we’ve ever seen!! All this, plus a decomposing Alan Funt, No Bueno Amigo shots, window blindness, “the f*cking who?” soundtrack bands, unbranded killers, bad dye jobs, hair volume, and a legendary edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! The podcast you’re about to hear is based on a true story… the story that we went to the theater and watched the fantastic new horror film, WEAPONS!! Also, we wanted to talk about, and we happen to own microphones. So we have a quick non-spoiler review right at the top for those who haven’t been lucky enough to catch this new film in theaters yet before we dive into the thorny, thrilling, and often laugh-out-loud funny motion picture!! We unpack the unexpected themes of the film, shop around our ideas for more soup-based flicks, discuss the power of underexplanation, worship at the altar of Aunt Gladys, and explore why this film seems to have challenged the media comprehension-deprived viewers in the audience!! All this, plus Naruto running, newspaper camouflage, Wolf Mens, Ka-tet building, bad dads, and uncover the mystery of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! Run, don’t walk, to listen to us today!!

The podcast feed… is gonna BREAK!! this week, as we dig into one of Stephen King’s most prophetic novels and one of the best film adaptations, 1983’s THE DEAD ZONE!! Here to help us see into the past and future of this terrifyingly political tale is writer and podcaster Matthew Jackson (The Scares That Shaped Us)!! Along the way, we discuss how the film ended up in the hands of the incredible David Cronenberg (thanks to Debra Hill), consider the right and wrong of Dino De Laurentiis' involvement with various King properties, and we explore how the key to the film lies in tracking Christopher Walken’s hair. All this, plus Americana Noir, the return of F*%khorse, addition by subtraction, the cinema of damaged dongs, a deep examination of Frank Dodd’s bedroom, the risk of unintentional "Mother!" syndrome, and a very cutting edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! You’ve heard the story before: a Maine telekinetic teen snaps after her bullies play a prank that goes too far… but what if the soundtrack has third-wave ska?
That’s right, consider this Carrie vol. 3 - we’re getting matching tattoos, confessing our love for Shirley Manson, and having our minds blown (apart) by THE RAGE: CARRIE 2!! Here to help us unpack a whole locker’s worth of background and foreground 90s references is author (the new comic book Be Not Afraid from Boom! Studios - issues #1 out now! And a new non-fiction book "DILF: Did I Leave Feminism," coming out October 14 from Melville House) and Returning Champion, Jude Ellison Doyle!!
Along the way, we dig into how this sequel graduated to movie screens, find+replace REO Speedwagon tracks, discover what Carrie White’s spinach was, visit the still-burning remains of the original high school, and consider why Sue freakin’ Snell still thinks she’s good at helping teens with problems!! All this, plus Hot Mom Defenestration Syndrome, “They’re All Gonna Laugh At You” remixes, telekinetic Pinocchios, “plain Jane-ing” of Mena Suvari, the Londons’ Prestige, an epic butt rock soundtracks rant, and a raving edition of a Choose Your Own Deathventure - complete with a top tier #GetBunked!! Press that play button with your mind immediately, people!!

It’s double the Carrie, double the body count this week as we unpack not one, but two remakes of the seminal Stephen King spectacular, CARRIE (2002 and 2013)!! And we’re bursting out of the scary prayer closet with two Retuning Champions you know and love - from Horror Queers, it’s Joe Lipsett and Trace Thurman here to help us two more modern Black proms and the problems that come with them!! Can any version of Carrie live up to DePalma’s? What if you add a lot of Dutch angled, vaseline-lensed SyFy Original visuals? What if you turn Carrie White into Darth Vader? How did Trace traumatize dance class bros? Do either of the remakes best the Carrie 2 sequel? It’s a battle of Christ Hartigans, lackluster Tommys, uneven Sues, and divergent Margrets!! All this, plus internet backlashes, plugs and tips, Carrie vs. Jigsaw, bad Billys, thick blood, wonky CGI, and a gym full of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! It’s twice the Horror Queers, twice the Carrie, and twice the Uncle Steve as we telekinetically launch Season Six of Kill By Kill right at ‘ya!!

If you’ve got a taste for terror - and seconds - you have a date with us and our 2023 episode covering the 1976 classic, CARRIE!! But why go back to Prom? The sixth season of Kill By Kill starts this Friday, and we'll be covering the cinematic adaptations of Stephen King!! To properly set up that bucket of pig's blood we'll be pouring over the two remakes, we wanted to give you a chance to revisit our thoughts on the Brian De Palma original - an explosive dance of teenage hormones, religious mania, and plenty of split diopter lens shots!! Along the way, we dig into the backstory that brought this unlikely blockbuster to the screen and the Oscar stage, explore how adult inaction fosters the bad attitudes in this blackboard jungle, uncover the origins of the primordial King Bully, and expand on the class struggle within this telekinetic teen body horror story!! All this, plus crucifixion organisms, mid poetry, bad miracles, and a devastating edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! No stone goes unturned, nor upthrown from the sky, in this deep dive exploration into every major character in this Kill By Kill favorite!! Check it out!!

Wanna turn that frown upside down? No? Well, we don’t either. That’s why it's such good news that we caught one of last month’s biggest horror releases to ensure a demon does it for us!! That’s right, this week we’re singing out loud about SMILE 2!! Along the way, we have a non-spoiler section for everyone before we grin and bear the rest of our in-depth coverage. We consider whether we got a Pennywise situation, then we add a Basil Exposition to the mix, and attempt to come up with some kinda name for this creature… a Smilemon? Smeemon? We’d love your help! Plus, we talk table matches, applying gentle pressure, Drew Barrymore horror, terrible managers, the Kyle Gallner Supremacy, the connective tissue between Smile and This Is Spinal Tap, worship at the alter of Naomi Scott, the Jumanji Conundrum, and deliver a very impactful edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! Remember something in these trying times: Smile Demon has your back!

How much Lot is a lot, and how much Lot equals a whole ‘lotta nothin’? That’s just one of the cursed questions we ask ourselves as we move back into town to talk about the 45th anniversary of CBS’ ’SALEM’S LOT!! And we’re not afraid to ask the big questions! Why is James Mason so nervous? Who taught David Soul’s Ben Mears to type like a caveman? How does this adaptation connect to cults and beating back inflation? Why does this TV mini-series demonstrate the cinematic vision of Tobe Hooper? How old is this middle school kid supposed to be? How many werewolf-killing canes does one store need onsite? All this, plus 70s horror charm, bad toupees, red silk boxer shopping advice, and so much more!!

All this, plus we marvel at Donald Pleasence’s crowd work, debate the limits of spoilers, and, of course, the main reason anyone would listen to this episode: NIGHTHAWKS!!

The Lot is many things. A small town full of secrets. A place where evil can fester. And it’s a Stephen King property that has a few swings at the bat. Well, this week on Kill By Kill, we’re the ones swinging the bat! That’s right, we hate to do it, but we’re driving a stake right through the heart of this 2022… wait, 2023… hold on… 2024 remake of ‘SALEM’S LOT - and we’re not happy about it at all. Why does this movie feel like a speed run? Why does it refuse to show more than six people at a time? Why does Barlow look like the Space Vampire from that episode of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century? Folks, we’re doing everything in our power not to be “those fans,” but this motion picture keeps dragging us back in. Remember how we raged at the 2011 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street? Well, it’s happening again. Make sure to listen til the end to hear about a couple of things we actually appreciate about the film and explain our many, many disappointments. We go in-depth with Uncle Steve’s original novel and try to parse exactly what went so terribly wrong with this new version. It’s a real journey. Don’t worry, we’re back to our chipper, fun lovin’ selves next week.

Great review of Fatal Attraction (1987). Can you also review I Spit On Your Grave (2010); and the sequel, I Spit On Your Grave 2 (2013)?
