In the pantheon of badassery in punk rock, no one has a lead on Deniz Tek. In addition to helping to bring Detroit-style rock ‘n roll to Australia and then to the world with Radio Birdman and playing with some of those Detroit legends in New Race, Deniz became an emergency room surgeon, then a navy pilot and flight surgeon and finally a Kona coffee farmer in Hawaii. We talk about it all, from his early years working at an auto plant in Michigan to his current music with James Williamson of the Stooges, an upcoming reissue of the New Race LP and how he’s still learning new things and taking on new challenges. Her love of horses briefly had her considering a career as a jockey, but a chance gig helping her filmmaker sister Maria led to a career as a director of photography. John Holmstrom is the founder and editor of Punk Magazine, which helped give the name, identity and personality to the music we love and spawned zine culture as we know it. It’s a fun (and funny) New York conversation that brings us from high school to teaching computer classes and the epiphany that led to his personal discovery of Krishna and his introduction to yoga. We learn the differences between yoga practices and teachers, how hard it is to sell your record collection, and how straight edge and ideals from a positive hardcore youth can grow and evolve along with you. Jim Murphy, or ‘Murf’ as he is more commonly known, is one of the most accomplished vert skaters of the 1980s, skating for Alva Skateboards and representing the East Coast. Kim Coletta saw her band Jawbox go from Dischord Records to a major label record deal before breaking up in the late 90s. Faced with uncertainty as to what came next, Kim went to library school before realizing that cataloguing in archives was not actually what she wanted to do. Luckily, an opportunity presented itself at an all-boys private school in Maryland, and Kim has thrived for many years as a teacher of multiple subjects and grades, sports coach and tech director. Kim’s punk rock background mixed with the ability to keep the room in line (even Charlie in this interview), has led to a successful career, even as Jawbox began playing again. In college, Marc Tamo’s goal was to intern and ultimately get a job at Alternative Tentacles to get closer to his favorite band, Neurosis. After convincing Fat Mike to be the first intern he went on to help launch the Honest Don's, a subsidiary of Fat Wreck Chords. He later moved up to help manage Phat as the label faced the decline of the punk rock’s mainstream appeal and the rise of file-sharing services like Napster. With his career in music coming to an end, he found an opportunity in public relations and later discovered a talent for storytelling through videos for technology businesses. His ‘serious’ career hasn’t dampened his sense of humor and humanity, and our discussion demonstrates on how doing what you love isn’t always all it’s cracked up to be.

Jonathan Anastas started playing in the Boston hardcore scene as a fourteen year-old in the seminal band D.Y.S., and his love for marketing and promotion followed soon after. He was instrumental in the development of the ‘crossover’ sound of punk meets metal that swept the scene, and was seemingly done with music altogether soon after high school. Initially planning to become a lawyer, he discovered advertising and marketing instead, and was an early pioneer of the digital marketing and video game industries. In our conversation, we talk about how many hardcore kids learned about P&L from Dischord Records, how a Metallica show at the Rat may have been as influential as Black Flag for the Boston scene and why so many marketing tactics may have gotten their start in the underground music scene.
