The fact is that even if they reported it, the justice system wouldn't have done anything substantial about it, and even if the parents were jailed, they could always be released. Killing them was final. Maybe money played a small role, but if it did, i think it was more along the line of: you put us through all of this, and this inheritance is the least you could do to repay what you did. They were guilty, but they didn't deserve a life sentence.
