On Episode 87 we’re starting with the global problem of moralism. Humanity’s #1 problem is its unbelief in the finished work of Jesus.
This week, Russ and Tony take a deep dive into the depths of history, the parts unknown, that shed light on why parts of society are STILL polarized. The “ah-ha’s” are endless in this conversation. Check it out.
Continuing the conversation from our last episode, Russ & Tony examine the underlying causes of the polarity within our modern social context.
Russ and Tony are back with a weighty and lengthy conversation surrounding the racial unrest resulting from the death of George Floyd.
Russ & Tony sit down with their friend Sara to talk about what it looks like to slow down with people while working in the church world.

Not so fast, people.

2020-05-2039:271

Amid a pandemic, there appears to be a recognition that families are enjoying a slower pace, a new focus on their neighbors, and online services have the opportunity to reach more and more people. So why the rush to get back to the way things were? Russ, Tony, and Ryan say, “not so fast.”
Aaaaaaaand they’re back! Russ and Tony climbed out of their quarantine bunkers to record a podcast! But while they were down there, they learned a few valuable lessons and they’re excited to share them with you on this latest episode of SDP! (Plus, one REALLY big announcement...)
Need someone to sabotage an opponent's pickup basketball game? Aaron VanDerVeen is your man! Today the guys hear Aaron’s story of grace, community, loss, and hope. Tune in and listen up!
MJ vs Lebron. Brisket Church vs Bean Burrito Church. Tony & Josh (today’s guest) vs Russ on the basketball court. Podcasting live from a bathtub. The story of Josh Chevalier. All this and more on today’s episode of The Slow Down Podcast.

Dear Church Planter...

2020-03-0347:46

Many people feel a call to bring good news to their city, and many feel called to do that through planting a church. But a few years in, many church planters run into a lot of the same problems. Russ and Tony talk about these very problems, as well as what it could look like to plant not just a church, but a movement of The Church, in a city.

Dear Pastor...

2020-02-2645:47

Table Network is all about putting the work of the ministry back into the hands off the average person and allowing THE Church to be and do what it has always been called to. So what about pastors? What’s their role in all this? What if you are a pastor, but you also want these same things? Can both of these things exist? If you’ve wrestled with this tension, this episode is for you!
Welcome back to The Slow Down. Today, Tony and Russ revisit their old friends, Bob & Becky, a couple of fictional characters who are longing to see their friends who are not interested in the church come to know and trust Jesus. If you’re like Bob or Becky, you’ve run into some big roadblocks when you have thought about how to engage your friends. Russ and Tony discuss those roadblocks and more on this extended episode of The Slow Down Podcast.

Leadership, pt3

2020-02-0547:31

It’s part 3 of our discussion on leadership. Russ and Tony discuss what it has looked like for them in the past and where they went wrong, as well as what leadership actually looks like from Jesus’ viewpoint. Is it possible that we’ve been focusing on the wrong things? Tune in to find out!

Leadership, pt2

2020-01-2927:32

In part 2 of the discussion, Russ and Tony continue to look at the myth of church leadership. There is a lot that is common in our western church culture that isn’t always biblical. Could those things be doing more damage than good to the church’s purpose in the world?

Intro To Leadership

2020-01-2226:12

Russ and Tony discuss “The future” that is 2020 and our devastating lack of real hoverboards. After that important topic, the guys talk about another big myth: church leadership. Listen up... this one packs a punch!
CHRISTMAS SPECIAL 2019 || The guys share some favorite Christmas traditions and talk about the "tradition" of advent in the modern church culture. New episodes coming at ya in January...stay tuned!
SDP_SIGNALS_06 || Let's say, hypothetically, that Russ snuck into somewhere he wasn't supposed to be...do you think he'd have time to record a whole podcast without getting caught? Today, we find out! Rushing into the conversation, the guys talk about the idea of gathering those who are walking in the way of Jesus, and what it should look like according to what we see in scripture. Do you need a building? Do you need a pastor or a sermon? What about music? How simple can you really make it? And at the end of the day, what really is the point of a regular gathering? All this and more on this episode of The Slow Down Podcast. You can support the podcast by sharing it with others and by partnering financially at www.patreon.com/tablenetwork. Share your thoughts on social media or send us an email at hello@thetablenetwork.com
Just a little bonus episode here to sweeten your Thanksgiving week. We'll jump back into the Signals series next week. Peace.
SDP_SIGNALS_05 || Between Russ and Tony, who do you think is more likely to stop at a fancy shirt store on the way to a meeting? After a brief skirmish concerning that very topic, the guys jump into the next observation in the Signals Series, and it's one that hits close to home: our Reclaim Training. In the places where we see movements of the gospel among those uninterested in the church, we find groups of people who are leading others through Reclaim. For those unfamiliar, Reclaim is a course based around 9 fundamental truths we see in the scriptures. You can find more info at www.reclaimtraining.com  You can support the podcast by sharing it with others and by partnering financially at www.patreon.com/tablenetwork. Share your thoughts on social media or send us an email at hello@thetablenetwork.com
SDP_SIGNALS_04 || What does it look like to set an ongoing table of grace and belonging for those around you that aren't interested in the church? This fourth episode in the Signals series is all about the simple symbol at the heart of Table Network. Do you need a sermon? What about music? Who's allowed to join the table? We're going back to the basics on this one. Listen up! You can support the podcast by sharing it with others and by partnering financially at www.patreon.com/tablenetwork. Share your thoughts on social media or send us an email at hello@thetablenetwork.com
SDP_SIGNALS_3 || On this third episode of this Signals series, the guys discuss the next common observation among movements of Jesus outside of the walls of the traditional, western church model. It boils down to this: those who are carrying good news into new places tend to have an indifference -not an opposition- to the normative church model. They can take it or leave it, as it best serves those they are doing life with. It's a tough spot to be in, and it is often a difficult road to get there. Many people do not understand and it is often opposed, as if these people are doing something straight-up wrong. This episode is sure to challenge some and even to ruffle some people's feathers! Put on a helmet...here we go... For more info, check us out at www.thetablenetwork.com. SDP_SIGNALS_2 || Okay, just a warning up-front here...this one gets a little...icky? If you can make it through Tony's literal bathroom humor, the guys get into a discussion about the second observation about movement: not naming your thing. It's amazing what happens to a movement when you put a name to it versus when you don't. There's a huge amount of freedom that comes from not naming "your thing" and instead just letting it be a lifestyle that you can invite other people into. We'd love to hear your thoughts as well! Feel free to reach out on social media or drop us an email at hello@thetablenetwork.com. And as always, you can partner with us to keep creating the podcast through www.patreon.com/tablenetwork
SDP_SIGNALS_01 || WELCOME BACK to The Slow Down Podcast! After a summer break, the guys are back, and we are kicking off a brand new conversation that we are calling Signals, talking about the common things we see among movements of Jesus among those outside the church. After a nearly-literal gut-busting story of Tony’s extreme athleticism, the guys tackle the first observation, which we’ve called the “Gardener Complex.” This is a good one!  We’d love to hear from you. Hit us up on social media with your feedback, or send us an email at hello@thetablenetwork.com Also, if you want to help support the show, head over to our Patreon page and become a partner with us. SDP 02.24 || This week’s episode is a special interview with a special couple. Emmett & Jessica Todd are Table Network members and close friends of Russ in South Florida. Here they share their stories, along with hurts and hopes they’ve experience along the way, and how the Reclaim journey has reshaped their ideas about Jesus, faith, grace, and church. SDP 02.23 || In this special episode, we take a detour from our normal podcast rhythm to share with you a talk from Russ about the scandal of grace that is the only hope for the broken people of the world who struggle with hurts, habits, & hangups (hint, that’s all of us).  If you’d like to explore more about this radical & scandalous grace, check out our Reclaim Training at https://www.reclaimtraining.com/. ----more----SDP 02.22 || What do Ephesians 4, fried chicken, and gout all have in common? The Slow Down Podcast of course! On today’s episode, Russ & Tony finish out their last conversation about the APEST gifts (Eph 4), looking at how they’re displayed in Jesus, and how they are often misused or misunderstood in the church. Oh yeah...they also talk about fried chicken and gout.  We are nearing the end of Season 2, and we are already getting excited about some new things we have planned for Season 3! ----more----SDP 02.21 || By now, you’re probably not surprised that we can fit the phenomenon that is Florida Man and the concept of spiritual gifts & callings into the same conversation...and that’s exactly what we did. In this week’s episode, Russ tries to distance himself from his current state of residence and the guys discuss Ephesians 4 and its implications on the Church as a whole. You might need to listen to this one twice...it’s a good one, for sure! To support the podcast and to get some cool perks, head over to www.patreon.com/tablenetwork and signup now!
SDP 02.20 || Quick poll...how do you all feel about Tony’s voice? Russ & Tony both have their opinions, and we’d love to hear yours. After their average amount of tomfoolery, the guys jump back into the conversation they started last week about “life in 3 spaces,” specifically focusing in on what a 3rd Space -different from the idea of “a 3rd place”- could look like, as well as some of their own personal experiences lately. It’s a great, tangible conversation that will hopefully help inspire others...or at least help you make a judgment about Tony’s voice. Support the podcast and get some cool perks at www.patreon.com/tablenetwork  ----more----
SPD 02.19 || Cue the tears. Grab your tissues. Ready the small violin...a symphony of tragedy has struck our beloved Russ Johnson. After recounting his harrowing journey to record today’s podcast, Russ and the guys begin a conversation about “Life in 3 Space,” talking about how we can connect with people in normal, everyday life, not with an agenda or program, but by simply meeting them where they are. Become one of our awesome Patreon partners and get a ton of cool perks. Sign up now at www.patreon.com/tablenetwork
SDP 02.18 || No banter today! Banding together to resist the urge to call out each other’s faults and flaws, the guys launch into a follow-up conversation to the last podcast about the practical aspects of discipleship. Though discipleship is far from a strict “method” or “strategy,” when we look at the life and teachings of Jesus, there are a few things we see that seem to always be present as he walks with others on their faith journeys.  And don’t forget to go and support the podcast at www.patreon.com/tablenetwork

2.17 Fess up, Nina

2019-04-2333:04

SDP 02.17 || Alright...time for you all to come clean. Who is pranking Tony? If you’re “Nina,” we’re gonna need you to come forward and confess.  After Tony recounts issues with his phone as of late, and Ryan comes clean on a secret he’s been keeping for a few years from his friend Greg, the guys jump into a discussion about the Church, the Great Commission, and making disciples. Is it possible that we’ve misunderstood things about the mission that Jesus has for his Church? What exactly is our role in the making of disciples? All this and more on this week’s episode of The Slow Down. Don’t forget to share, rate, and review. And check cool perks and how you can partner with us at www.patreon.com/tablenetwork
SDP 02.16 || How fast is too fast? Depends on who's driving, we suppose. After Ryan relives the terror of being hostage to another Table Network member's Dale Earnhardt Jr. impression, the guys press into the relationship between the Church and the mission of Jesus. What is the Church's role, and what is not? Is it possible that, in the Missional Community movement, the Church might have overcorrected? All these topics and more on today's Slow Down Podcast! NEW: Support the podcast and get cool perks by going to www.patreon.com/tablenetwork
SDP 02.15 || Need a couple of awkward ministry moments? We've got you covered. After storytime with Russ & Tony, the guys dive into what it means to be the Church. What is the Church? Is it a building? Is it a mission? A culture? How is identity different than activity? What do the scriptures really say about what to do when the Church gathers? All this and more on this week's episode of The Slow Down.
SDP 02.14 || What if you didn't have to exhaust yourself with a life of continual self-improvement? On a recent visit to The Windy City, Russ & Tony joined forces to explore the idea of female-only bars...after coming to a definite resolution on that topic, they jump into a discussion about waiting on the fruit of the Spirit verses manufacturing our own fake fruit, and the joy that comes as a result of walking in what God is already doing.
SPD 02.13 || Making a podcast isn't always easy. How do you pronounce the word "handkerchief?" We still don't know for sure. After discussing this, prayer napkins, and grilled cheese marketing strategies, the guys jump into a discussion about how difficult grace is today in our performance-based world, both inside and outside of religious circles.
SDP 02.12 || We're dropping a special, second episode this week! After Russ confesses about driving misdeeds in a school zone, Mike Oppedahl from GiANT Worldwide joins us to talk about leadership, grace, and a great new resource from Giant coming out soon called 100X. Make sure to listen in to hear about some really cool perks for pre-ordering 100X.
SDP 02.11 || If you've been wondering how Team Russ & Team Tony stacked up on the basketball court, you don't have to wait any longer! After revealing the results of various recent athletic competitions, the guys jump into the book of Galatians to discuss the relationship between grace and effort. Is grace opposed to effort? Why was Paul so frustrated at the Galatians? Russ, Tony, and Ryan explore this topic and more.
SDP.02.10 || An Interview w/ Uncommon Good || During our recent trip to the west coast we were able to slow down with the Uncommon Good crew out of San Diego. Their mission is to introduce people (uninterested in the church) to a God that loves them within a place that’s safe for them, which is music to our ears. Listen in on our convo from sunny CA.
SDP.02.09 || After the immediate failure of the guys' promise to not make fun of each other DURING this episode, Russ, Tony, and Ryan talk about what it means to bear fruit from a place of rest in Jesus. They spend a good chunk of their time looking at Jesus' teaching about the vine and the branches (John 15) and what it means when Jesus talks about branches in him that don't bear fruit.
SDP.02.08 || What's the secret to being a good basketball player? After Ryan shares his personal strategy, the crew gets into how the finished work of Jesus impacts our identity. They also wrestle a bit with the idea of tension, and how these seemingly radical ideas about grace tend to make us uneasy and uncomfortable.
SDP.02.07 || What if Journey had it right the whole time and the key to life is simply to not stop believing? In our religious society, it is often unclear what it really means to be a follower of Jesus. What do you have to do? Are there steps and stages? What is the scorecard? In this episode Russ, Tony, & Ryan talk about how a person actually becomes a disciple of Jesus while avoiding the monotony of the rules and systems we seem to have inherited. Also, the legitimacy of Tony's beautiful flowing mane comes under the microscope...
SDP.02.06 || As we gear up for Exponential Conference, we are taking a break from talking about our Reclaim training to do an interview with our friend, Dr. Sean Benesh. Sean and Russ will be leading a session at Exponential this year about sustainable models for church planting through entrepreneurial efforts. Sean has been involved in church planting for the past 15 years as a church planter, church planting strategist, seminary professor, and small business owner. Currently he teaches at Warner Pacific University and Multnomah University and through the Intrepid Cohort teaches and facilitates discussions on the topics of social entrepreneurship, community economic development, and church planting.
