Right hemisphere stroke and personality changes go together more often than people realize, especially for care partners of someone with aphasia. It can leave you feeling like you're living with a stranger. One wife spent hours making her husband's favorite lasagna. He ate it without a word. No thank you, no reaction, nothing. She sat there wondering if he even noticed the effort. He wasn't ignoring her on purpose. His brain simply wasn't registering the moment the way it used to. Then there's the other side. One husband points out the window and his wife has no idea if he means the neighbor's yard, a business across town, or something else entirely. He knows exactly what he's trying to say. His mouth won't cooperate. She has to ask yes or no questions just to find the thread. In this episode, you'll learn the difference between fluent aphasia (like Wernicke's) and non-fluent aphasia (like Broca's), what each one actually looks like day to day, and specific ways to respond to each one so you're not guessing at what just happened. 0:00 — Introduction 1:45 — Fluent (Vernicke's) Aphasia Explained 6:29 — Navigating Misunderstandings with Fluent Aphasia 10:06 — Prevention Through Education & Communication 12:25 — Non-Fluent (Broca's) Aphasia Explained 16:03 — Real-Life Example: Living with Broca's Aphasia 18:59 — Strategies for Non-Fluent Aphasia 21:13 — Comparing Fluent vs. Non-Fluent Aphasia 22:47 — Final Thoughts & Wrap-Up LIFE Speech Pathology helps care partners of people with aphasia understand what's actually happening in the brain, so you're not guessing at the fix.
