Business relationships are massively important in the telecommunications industry, especially so for LINX and its data center partners. They play a key role in ensuring that LINX's 900+ membership base stays connected across its multiple Points of Presence (PoPs) in the UK, and abroad. In this episode LINXcast host Jez Orbell speaks with Sandy McMurty, Vice President - Connectivity Business Development at QTS Data Centers. It was a great discussion where Sandy talks about his career to date, the history of QTS, and the Northern Virginia region as a communications gateway. Also discussed were current trends in connectivity, the importance of peering and IXPs like LINX for data centers, and what's next for Internet infrastructure. How important will collaboration be within our industry to ensure we stay ahead of the curve? Additional detail on LINX's partnership with QTS is available here: https://www.linx.net/news/linx-pop-goes-live-at-qts-data-centers/ You can learn more about the LINX NoVA exchange in Northern Virginia on our LINX network page: https://www.linx.net/about/network/linx-nova/ Please read our online newsletter for more updates on LINX activities: www.linx.net/linx-newsletter LINXcast theme music by Scott Holmes (FMA)

As the UK forges to head with gigabit rollout to under-served and rural areas we’ve seen a rise in alternative networks (AltNets) providing the telecoms industry with a timely boost. The UK government plans to provide over 15 million homes and businesses with gigabit-capable broadband by the end of 2025. At the recent London Internet Exchange member meeting (LINX116) a panel session took place covering many of the key issues for the sector. It was such an interesting discussion that we’ve decided to do a playback of that panel session. The panelists featured were: Adam Gosling, Network Architect at CityFibre James Blessing, Head of IT Development at Freedom Fibre Doug Williams, Director of Network Operations at Ogi To preview the playback we caught up with panel moderator, Simon Beevers. In addition to finding out more about AltNets, and his career in telecoms, we also covered his role on the LINX program committee otherwise known as the LPC. The LPC is made up of professionals from the LINX community to help plan the content for our membership meetings. It's a very interesting episode that is well worth a listen. A video of the AltNet panel is available on the LINX YouTube channel. For more LINX news read our online newsletter: www.linx.net/linx-newsletter LINXcast theme music by Scott Holmes (FMA)

LINX staged its final in-person member meeting before the Coronavirus lockdown in February 2020. Since then, there have been eight LINX member meetings, seven of which have been virtual only. Agendas had to be stripped back. Where once we were hosting two-day events, they were condensed down to a couple of hours. It’s totally changed the way this industry operates on a personal level where nearly all our meetings have involved a screen as we worked from home. The good news is that things are beginning to change. Since restrictions have begun to ease, LINX staff have attended a number of events around the UK, and abroad. For this episode of LINXcast we speak with Inga Turner, of the LINX Business Development team, about being able to attend industry conferences again. What was her experience of meeting people again face-to-face, what was the travel experience like, and what precautions were put in place by organisers because of Covid restrictions? Did she notice any differences in the way people interacted with each other? What tips does she have for people thinking about attending industry events again? LINX will be attending a number of international events in the coming months. Here is a selection: SEE - South-East Europe Ripe Regional Meeting (Ljubljana, Slovenia - 11-12 April) Peering Days (Athens, Greece - 26-28 April) International Telecoms Week (Washington, Virgina - 9-12 May) Global Peering Forum 2022 (National Harbour, Maryland 11-13 May) RIPE84 (Berlin, Germany - 16-20 May) LINX116 (Manchester, UK - 26-27 May) For more LINX news read our online newsletter: www.linx.net/linx-newsletter LINXcast theme music by Scott Holmes (FMA)
On the IXP database there are 737 different Internet exchange points listed globally but how much do you know about them? This podcast will go some way to explain how a multi-site exchange like LINX operates and runs its network. To start off LINX CEO, Kurtis Lindqvist, talks about the LINX strategy which has four main areas of focus. These are economies of scale, its regional Internet Exchange strategy, LINX’s broader interconnection offerings, plus longtail and future growth opportunities. How do these combine and relate to company objectives? How does competition and the wider interconnection market as a whole fit in? Obviously for a tech business investment is critical to stay relevant. LINX Chief Technical Officer, Richard Petrie, covers network developments such as 400GE, IT computer services, observability, tooling, equipment delivery timescales, and the LINX member portal. Automation and APIs are becoming increasingly important and Richard, along with Riccardo Verzeni, LINX Software Manager, will discuss those too. At the beginning of the year, LINX introduced a new pricing structure. This greatly simplifies the capacity upgrade process and offers greater flexibility in adding different services on member ports. LINX Product Manager, Mike Hellers, explains how additional LINX services are integral to the LINX pricing model. Peering has traditionally been the primary focus for an Internet exchange point but today it is more about being an interconnection hub. An Internet exchange needs to be able to provide a range of different products and services, whatever a network’s requirements may be. In the final section, we’re going to look at the important issue of Internet regulation. LINX is proud to have been able to offer public affairs support to its members for many years, and indeed it is a core LINX function. LINX Director of Legal and Policy, Malcolm Hutty, provides an overview of the key policy developments that could potentially impact LINX members at every member meeting. We would very much recommend you visit the LINX YouTube channel to watch extended playbacks of all the presentations featured in this podcast. These were originally part of the LINX115 member meeting which was held in February. In the first full episode of series three of LINXcast we'll be asking why there aren’t more females in the UK choosing to study computing and technology. To help find out more we have an interview with two computer science students, Silvia Gelina and Hamnah Rassen, who LINX invited in on work experience. They will be joined by LINX’s Anne Bates, Head of Exchange Platforms who will tell us about the development program being run by LINX. This episode of LINXcast is a panel session on content access as featured at the LINX114 member meeting of the London Internet Exchange. Moderated by Simon Beevers, a member of the LINX Programme Committee, the panel features Ronan Mullally (Akamai Technologies), Ben Nicklin (Limelight Networks) and Tom Rigg (Broadband for the Rural North - B4RN). Among the questions covered were: Capacity planning: How do you approach it? How do you manage normal growth and then separately, how do you handle special events or "unexpected growth". Do service providers have the "tools" and processes to influence how traffic is delivered? (i.e across existing caches, or specific interconnections (peering, private or public). And the other way around, meaning what methods are content networks using to decide where and how to deliver traffic? What opportunities are there for service providers and content delivery networks to work together?
