Description

This is a show about the moments that change us, fundamentally and forever. Each week, host Stephanie Wittels Wachs (Lemonada’s co-founder and award-winning queen of darkness and light) is sitting down with a new guest to explore happy/sad stories of survival, resilience and transformation. After three seasons of exploring the "last day" of people’s lives in an effort to understand mass epidemics, Steph was ready for a change herself. Some “last days” are hopeful. Some are tragic. But at the heart of every “last day” is also a new beginning. Laugh/cry with us.

There are few modern photos more iconic than the image of Christine Blasey Ford with her hand raised in the U.S. Senate chamber, vowing to tell nothing but the truth about being sexually assaulted by then-nominee to the Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh. From that moment on, Christine’s life was forever changed, exposing her to vicious hate and shaking the deeply rooted respect for government that had motivated her to come forward in the first place. Now, almost six years later, Christine sits down with Stephanie to give her a look into this new life. She shares how, even though many things got harder for her after her testimony, if she had the choice to do it all again, she would. Lemonada has teamed up with Apple Books to bring you the Lemonada Book Club. The March pick is One Way Back by Christine Blasey Ford. It’s early 2020. COVID-19 begins to spread around the globe like wildfire, and many people –– particularly in the US — are stunned. But then there are doctors like Craig Spencer, who specialize in public health and know all too well the devastation that infectious disease can cause. Having worked to combat Ebola in West Africa years before, Craig recounts what it was like to be on the frontlines of highly contagious and deadly diseases across the world. Nearly four years after COVID made its way to the United States, Craig sits down with Stephanie to reflect on where we are today — and how much further we have to go. Four years ago, Brooke had the best day of her life — then two months later, she had the worst. The whiplash from the bliss of her wedding day to the reality of mourning rocked Brooke to her core. She sits down with Stephanie to recount the beauty that she experienced before the loss that she suffered, and how she’s tried to let the two exist side by side in the years that have followed. Stefanie: Wine Moms

Stefanie: Wine Moms

2024-02-0759:163

Stefanie Wilder-Taylor was a cool mom who loved wine. As an author and blogger, she made a name for herself championing mom’s right to booze. What better way to unwind during naptime than with a drink? But despite her jokes, she could never quite quell the nagging internal voice that maybe she was drinking too much. After nearly 30 years of shoving that voice way down, Stefanie crosses an unthinkable line while drunk. She shares with Stephanie how her winding journey to sobriety included upending her public image – and discovering she wasn’t the only mom hearing the nagging voice.  Follow Stephanie on Instagram at @wittelstephanie. This week, we’re sharing one of our favorite episodes from this past year. The story focuses on a profound loss that our guest Kate experienced right in the throes of Christmas, but it’s also about how, years later, her family has created a whole new way of relating to grief, memory, and joy. Turns out, we could all use some of that during the holiday season. Follow Stephanie on Instagram at @wittelstephanie. Growing up, Lina Martinez treasured holidays spent with her family. She remembers the food, the ornaments, the dancing, and — above all – her dad, who made everything warmer and brighter. Year round, her dad Luis was her person, her best friend. But when Luis fell ill shortly before Christmas, Lina could already tell her holidays were going to look different from then on. Lina shares with Stephanie what it was like to receive and lose the most important kind of love in her life, and how she makes space for her grief, even during the most “wonderful” time of the year.  Follow Stephanie on Instagram at @wittelstephanie. When Carolina discovered all of the things her teenage daughter had been hiding from her, it set off a chain of events that threatened to dissolve their relationship completely — or worse. Today, Stephanie sits down with both generations to hear the full story. Carolina was a straight-A student who got pregnant at 14. Her daughter Arely faced bullying and abuse in silence, feeling like there was nobody in the world she could trust with her struggles. Together they trace how mounting trauma pushed them to the breaking point and how, today, empathy and communication are helping them heal. Today’s episode discusses self-harm and suicidal ideation. Tig: Hi, I Have Cancer

Tig: Hi, I Have Cancer

2023-07-1959:104

If comedian Tig Notaro hadn’t had cancer, her life might’ve actually been worse. In those sobering moments post-diagnosis, she got up on stage and told a room of people all about it. “The crowd went wild” is an understatement and was only a taste of what was to come. Years after a recording of that standup set went viral and launched her into the cultural mainstream, Tig sits down with Stephanie to talk about living in a world of unknowns. Because as hard as her life was back then, Tig could have never imagined how good it was about to get. This interview was recorded before the start of the SAG-AFTRA strike. The 2nd has been restricted so many times already. The GCA, the Brady laws, The Hughes ammendment and so on. The rights enshrined in it have been whittled down, restricted and people are done with being told what's acceptable to own by a bunch of rich douches who are protected by the very same guns the demand are banned. You wanna know why gun crime is exploding? Because liberal DA's and the federal prosecutors refuse to charge under the existing laws. Its supposed to be a 5 year mandatory minimum for illegal possession by a felon. Giving an armed felon who has prior charges a suspended or 1 year sentence means they will just keep committing gun crimes. I have no interest in hearing this Kimber shill, Fudd try and tell me a damn thing. The 2nd isn't about hunting. Stop pretending it is. Shall. Not. Be Infringed. And fuck you and every single Karen who continues to try and restrict constitutional protections.

listened to this episode, coincidentally, the day after Uvalde, Texas. The NRA feels like a domestic terrorist group. I really enjoyed the cogent logic of speaker Ryan. Why are these voices not heard? Why are none of our voices heard? Whose children have to die? How many is enough?

I am not usually a commenter on podcasts or anything really. This episode MOVED me. I want Jenny to know how absolutely amazing her story is. The system absolutely failed her husband, and the entire family. Jenny demonstrated so much resilience over and over again. Not many people could be in her position and respond in the way she did. And since I'm here writing, Stephanie, I have listened to season 1 and am working on season 2. I appreciate your angle on these tough topics. I am a trauma survivor, special education public school teacher, and single mother with a partner in recovery. I admire you for taking your experience and turning into an opportunity for others.

My daughter suffered with severe depression as a teen. We sat through many long ER waits and evaluations. We were always turned away even though she admitted plans to commit suicide. I worked so hard to keep her alive. By God's grace she is 26 today. She still suffers with depression but she refused to try to get help now. I wish help was easier to find and not so stigmatized.
