Description

A monthly podcast focusing on the lore of the sprawling Warhammer Old World universe. With tongues firmly in cheeks we will help you to separate ghouls from goblins, snotlings from skaven stormfiends, and bonesplitters from beastclaw raiders ... this last pair was a test, they’re from Age of Sigmar and not Warhammer. See? Laying Down The Lore is the podcast you didn’t even know you needed!

Join Ben and Cral, a couple of self-confessed Warhammer noobs, as they journey into a fantasy institution guided by ageing fanboy Darren as he attempts to distill and summarise 30 years worth of Warhammer knowledge into bite-sized chunks.

Informative, irreverent, and largely irrelevant, Laying Down The Lore will come to be your indispensable guide to the world of Warhammer Old World.

2,300 years of history in an hour and a half. We take a look at the time from the first to the twelfth Everchosen of Chaos. We dart through the champions and events of note stopping to gawk at Dragon Ogre Shaggoths and their Things of Skulls, Chaos Dragons and their split personalities and the life giving champions… of death. From Dark Elves to the Tomb Kings we look at how the forces of chaos are recorded through other race’s history. We close out the episode with the Great war against Chaos in 2301-2303 looking at the major events and battles of not only of Asavar Kul’s legions but also the defending forces of the Empire, Kislev and Dwarfs.  Show notes Patreon Chunks of Dhar Merchandise Quartermaster
We launch into the History of the Warriors of Chaos by heading BACK to the future, no to the collapse of the polar gates. We discuss Belakor’s rise and fall and the Dwarfs that would become Chorfs AKA Chaos Dwarfs, all while trying to work out who the nameless chaos champions of early history were. We touch on some of the more notable battles as well as the defences that different races use against them. We close out the episode with a look at two of the more famous Champions of Chaos, Azazel (née Gerreon) and Morkar, the retconned first Everchosen of Chaos or Pillager of Ulthuan… Dhar’s still not sure. Continuing our look at the great tribes of the north we look at the role played by Chaos Champions. Leaders, sorcerers and prophetic warriors of the gods, Chaos Champions represent the most “colourful” aspects of the followers of chaos in Warhammer the Old World. We discuss how one begins on the eightfold pathway to Daemonhood and what challenges such beings face as they begin their inevitable pilgrimage North. We look at four such champions and their warbands from the heyday of the Realms of Chaos books and detail their followers and rewards. Show notes Patreon Chunks of Dhar Merchandise Quartermaster
In this episode we introduce you all to the charmingly rustic, though somewhat “evil”, peoples of the north. The four great nation tribes, the Marauders, of the very stabby arctic circle. We start with the Norscans of … well… Norsca, those evil vikings that patrol the sea of claws and raid the costs of the old world. Moving east we then take a gander at the nomadic Kurgan tribes and then the stone age savages that raid both Cathay and Naggaroth, the Hung. We briefly touch on the most mysterious and violent of the tribes, the Tong, before giving a somewhat confusing description of the layers of tribal society. Oh and there is a Map that we 100% will include in the show notes… 100% Show notes Patreon Chunks of Dhar Merchandise Quartermaster
In our final High Elf episode we look at Ulthuans capacity to make and win wars. We examine the stratified nature of High Elf armies and the defined roles each unit type takes. We look at the core of the High Elf armies, the Citizen Levy before diving into the famed units drawn from each of the ten kingdoms. From the Dragon Knights of Caledor to the flying chariots of the Lothern Seaguard. We dig into the role magic and magic items play in the forces of Ulthuan before having a bit of a laugh at the “sporadic” leadership of Court appointed generals and the fearsome beasts that they mount. Show notes Patreon Chunks of Dhar Merchandise Quartermaster

Show notes - Patreon In this episode we look at the three most recent Phoenix Kings; Morvael the Impetuous, Bel-Hathor the Sage and Finubar the Seafarer. We explore the implications of Ulthuan looking outward once more and the drastic increase in trade and exploration with the opening of Lothern to humanity under Bel-Hathor. We follow Finubar as he travels the world making alliances with those he sees and beneficial to Ulthuan and whatever future it can now forge for itself. We compare Finubar with Malekith and that dark soul’s own period of exploration at the dawn of Ulthuan. In this episode we start with the great Scouring of the Dark Elves by the Phoenix King Tethlis and his descent into bloodlust and scorched earth tactics. This is followed by a dissection of the reign of Bel-Korhadris who with the creation of both the White Tower and the Great Hunt shaped the culture and society of Ulthuan, perhaps more than any other king, into what it is today. We define their relationship to the winds of magic and what makes their mages so powerful. We look at the reign of the artist king Aethis who beautified Ulthuan to an extreme degree and neglected all else allowing the Cults of excess to resurge. Show notes Patreon Chunks of Dhar Merchandise Quartermaster
CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO OUR OLD WORLD LORE CRASH COURSE NOW! In this episode we follow the deceitful plans of Malekith and this cadre of assassins as they attempt to seize power on Ulthuan. We see how they are opposed at every turn by the mighty phoenix king Caledor the First and ultimately the very mages who created the Great Vortex. The resulting sundering destroys 20% of Ulthuan and gives birth to the Dark Elves. Malekith’s evil machinations continue with the instigation of the War of the Beard resulting in both the death of Caledor the Second but also the loss of the Phoenix crown. Finally we look at the Exodus, the great migration of most elves back the safety and protection of Ulthuan, that tangentially gave birth to the wood Elves of Athel Loren. Show notes Patreon Chunks of Dhar Merchandise Quartermaster

In this episode we introduce the race and culture of the High Elves. We examine what makes a high elf a high elf and look at their origins and beliefs; Were they manipulated or Created? … we don’t know either… We explore their floating Island kingdom of Ulthuan and its ten kingdoms, each of which reflects an aspect of the High Elf psyche. We get distracted by the bedazzled tower of tackiness that marks the entrance to their inner kingdoms and discover that Ben wants ten percent of paradise. We look some of the major shrines and sites that play such a pivotal role in Ulthuan’s history such as the Isle of the Dead, the Island of rebirth, and the Shrine of Asuryan. Show notes Patreon Chunks of Dhar Merchandise Quartermaster
In this, our final look into the Vampire Counts, we explore the undead lawnmower that is their capacity to make war. We take a gander at the motive force of the Army, the dark wind of Dhar, and how it is used within the Vampire Counts Army. Then we explore some abilities that are associated with each of the bloodlines and how they have changed over the editions. We take an unusual tactic of not discussing either Zombies of Skeletons. Instead, we look at the frankly terrifying units available to these master of the undead such as the bestial Vargheists and Crypt Horrors together with units such as Grave Guard and Banshees. We close out the episode with a discussion of the undead monsters and ethereal chariots that great lord ride into battle. Show notes Patreon Chunks of Dhar Merchandise Quartermaster
YAARRRRRR! In this episode we discover the totally original idea of “undead” pirates and their fleets, specifically those of Lustria’s Vampire Coast. We look at the life, death, and unlife of Luthor Harkon the leader of “The Zombie Pirates of the Vampire Coast”, That’s one hell of a faction name… We follow his buckleswashing adventures in the jungles of Lustria as he battles Lizardmen and colonists from the Old World. His desire for treasure leads to both his insanity and profound anti-magical status. We look at his brief but fruitless alliance with Morathi before diving (get it?) into some of the more esoteric troop types and warmachines such as the Rotting Leviathans and the terrifying Necrofex Collossus. Show notes Patreon Chunks of Dhar Merchandise Quartermaster
INFAMY, INFAMY, they all have it in for me! (No? Please yourselves) In this episode we look at the practitioners of the dark art of Necromancy, the … eh, Necromancers. Who are they? Why do they raise the dead? What is the difference between them and Necrarchs? We look at these and other questions before focusing on two of the most dangerous necromancers in Warhammer Lore. First we tell the tale of the insane “Lichemaster” Heinrich Kemmler who, with the wight lord Krell, are characters almost as old as the Warhammer game itself. We then delve into the history and machinations of possibly the oldest character in Warhammer lore, Constant Drachenfels, a malevolent warlock who predates the arrival of the old ones. Show notes Patreon Chunks of Dhar Merchandise Quartermaster
In this episode we discover that while Konrad von Carstein ravaged the Empire his mysterious brother, Mannfred, studied the art of necromancy within the bleak sands of Nehekhara. We look at the Machiavellian plans of Mannfred and his role in the downfall of Vlad. So effective were his deceptions that Dhar keeps calling him Vlad. We look at Mannfred’s campaign to become the Emperor, marching to Altdorf itself where he is confronted by Grand Theoginist, and surfer-bro, Kurt III. We follow his siege of Marienburg and his cat-and-mouse evasion until he is involved in a Griffon mounting incident at the battle of Hell Fen. Show notes Patreon Chunks of Dhar Merchandise Quartermaster

We follow the machinations of his five surviving sons and the fratricide that ensues resulting in Konrad von Carstein, an irredeemable psychopath, taking the throne of Sylvania and the start of the Second Vampire War. We look at this bloody crusade of violence as it faces off against both Dwarf and Human armies. The alliance of the elector Counts of the Empire, their treachery and the very brief reign of a zombie emperor. We end with the battle of Grim Moor and the fall of Konrad under a Runefang wielded by a vengeful son. Show notes Patreon Chunks of Dhar Merchandise Quartermaster
Our fourth episode starts with the end … of Mordheim! We explore the destruction of the city, its cause, the warbands that flock to the city for Wyrdstone (TM), some of the more notable locations, and what, if any, benefits this all provides to Vlad von Carstien, the Vampire Count of Sylvania. We then pivot into the story of the First Vampire War, where the Empire is once again brought to the brink of destruction! We look at the impact this has on both the Living and the Dead as Vlad goes on his happy-funtime tour of zombie recruitment being destroyed and returning to “life” several times. We close out with the story of Felix Mann, the Empire's greatest thief who *spoiler warning* steals something of great importance from the vampire's nap camp leading ultimately to Vlad's true death. Show notes Patreon Chunks of Dhar Merchandise Quartermaster

We closed out with the fabled Total Dragon Drainage of Abborash, the birth of the Ordo Draconis, and the return, again, of Nagash! Show notes Patreon Chunks of Dhar Merchandise Quartermaster
