Garth Pedersen shares shares innovative approaches his elders quorum has used to improve ministering. He shares his journey in leadership over the past three years, focusing on creating a culture of ministering that avoids shame and fosters genuine relationships. Garth emphasizes the need for leaders to model ministering behaviors rather than simply assigning tasks, advocating for a supportive environment where members feel empowered to engage in meaningful connections. He outlines three key principles for effective ministering: praying for those they serve, communicating with them, and genuinely loving and serving them. Garth also addresses the challenges of ministering in today's society, where social interactions can feel awkward and disconnected.
To combat these challenges, Garth introduced the concept of "ministering night," held every fourth Sunday, where members are invited to visit families together. This initiative not only encourages participation but also helps build relationships in a low-pressure setting. Garth shares inspiring stories from these visits, illustrating how simple interactions can lead to meaningful connections and a renewed sense of community. He emphasizes the importance of agency, reminding listeners that while they can invite and support others, ultimately it is up to individuals to choose their paths. The episode concludes with a call to action for leaders to focus on love and service, fostering a culture of ministering that reflects the teachings of Christ.

He shares his journey to baptism, which began with his wife's childhood fascination with the church, leading to their eventual conversion. David provides insights into the challenges and dynamics of church life in Belgium, emphasizing the secular nature of Western Europe and the difficulties of maintaining active membership.
Throughout the episode, David shares valuable leadership principles he has learned during his time as a bishop. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining a positive tone in communication, focusing on what can be done rather than what cannot. Additionally, he addresses the issue of disappointment among members, noting that many inactive members cite feelings of disappointment as a primary reason for their absence from church.
David highlights the importance of listening to members' concerns and building trust, sharing personal anecdotes that illustrate his approach to leadership. 2:50: Mark’s BYU Education Week presentation was on the temple, motivating Leading Saints to have a podcast on how best leaders can prepare members to attend the temple for the first time. How does Mark as a bishop help members have a positive first-time experience?
5:00: Members have a natural desire to better understand the temple. Early chapters in the Book of Moses are an excellent template and place to start when studying the endowment ceremony.
6:45: Experiencing the endowment by viewing the video combined with the attendance of the Holy Ghost is akin to having a vision. Joseph Smith did the same for the early saints when the endowment ceremony was acted out.
7:45: The “practical” approach of reviewing the worthiness standard, explaining what can be shared about temple clothing, is still very vague.
8:33: Elder Bednar’s talk Seek Learning by Faith: “The most important learnings of life are caught—not taught.” Speaking at or telling people what to do or how to prepare may not be fully absorbed. Providing members with materials that they can read over time and with the attendance of the Holy Ghost is far more effective in helping them “catch” and discover truth for themselves. (See “Links” section above.)
10:30: How we can better understand what leaders can say about the temple.
13:08: Quoting Elder Bednar: “Two basic guidelines can help us achieve the proper understanding emphasized by President Benson. “Guideline #1. Because we love the Lord, we always should speak about His holy house with reverence. We should not disclose or describe the special symbols associated with the covenants we receive in sacred temple ceremonies. Neither should we discuss the holy information that we specifically promise in the temple not to reveal. “Guideline #2. The temple is the house of the Lord. Everything in the temple points us to our Savior, Jesus Christ. We may discuss the basic purposes of and the doctrine and principles associated with temple ordinances and covenants.”
14:40: Preventing members from feeling uncomfortable about temple worship after their initial experience. Help members understand that “the ultimate purpose of the temple endowment is to bring us into the presence of God.”
19:37: How to come into the presence of God: one must be prepared through ancient ritual, instruction, and covenant—all of which are part of the endowment ceremony.

The discussion begins with an overview of Trevor's leadership style, which is deeply rooted in his experiences of overcoming business failures and the importance of faith. Trevor emphasizes the significance of core values in both business and church leadership, sharing how MTN OPS has cultivated a culture of trust and connection through its core values, including the unique principle of recognizing God. He explains that these values serve as decision-making guardrails that guide the organization toward its mission of improving lives.
The conversation then shifts to the Children and Youth program of the Church, particularly focusing on the four goal quadrants: physical, spiritual, mental, and social. Trevor shares insights on how to effectively engage youth leaders in utilizing this quadrant to set meaningful goals without overwhelming the youth. He recounts a successful initiative where young men from his stake participated in a series of experiential activities designed to help them recognize their strengths and set personal goals. This approach not only fosters accountability but also creates a deeper connection between youth and their leaders.
Trevor also discusses his role as the stake Young Men president, detailing how he transformed the mission preparation process by moving it to a more engaging environment and incorporating interactive elements. By inviting returned missionaries to share their experiences and providing a supportive atmosphere, he has seen increased participation and enthusiasm among the youth. The episode concludes with Farnes encouraging leaders to live by their core values, celebrate successes, and create a culture of accountability that inspires youth to grow spiritually and personally. B.J. encourages listeners to understand that their efforts, no matter how small, are sufficient when coupled with Christ's grace, reinforcing the idea that the Atonement is a dynamic and integral part of everyday life. He reminds us that Christ is always present, ready to help individuals navigate their challenges and find beauty in their struggles.

Just when she thought she had done everything, she was called to be ward history specialist.

Highlights
0:00:03 Introduction of DeAnna Murphy
0:00:48 Her deepest desire has just been to be a great mom; her best leadership training has come in that arena. Professionally, she’s an executive leadership coach.
0:03:44 Great leaders don’t just ask “what we are trying to accomplish?”, but also, “what is important about it?”
0:04:07 When we start a meeting establishing the purpose of the meeting, it creates power.
0:04:20 Beginning a 13-14 Sunday School class by establishing the purpose
0:05:43 “Of all the things you’re trying to accomplish with this summit, what’s the most important thing you’d hope they’d learn and they’re longing to hear?”
0:06:00 (Kurt) Hope people walk away with a deeper ability and motivation to run a meeting
0:06:50 We meet to unify. We meet to connect. We meet to multiply our resources together. D&C 43:8-9 – When we meet, we should instruct and edify one another
0:08:08 To “instruct and edify together” implies that each participant holds a piece – no one person holds all the pieces
0:11:06 Each person in a council has a unique strength and a unique perspective.
0:13:23 DeAnna’s experience with a leader having a diametrically opposed viewpoint – she might have a difficult time understanding his perspective. She sometimes had a difficult time communicating with him. It helped them to understand how the other viewed situations.
0:15:29 Feelings of self-consciousness, uncertainty, and fear led to defensiveness. Granting herself grace allowed her to grant others grace, and remove the defensiveness.
0:16:05 Citing Ether 12:27 (weakness that they may be humble); DeAnna focuses on Ether 12:37 (because you see your weakness, you’ll be made strong)
0:16:35 DeAnna’s weaknesses were not made strong by becoming like her Stake President. Instead, they learned from each other, they became stronger in each other, and were unified in the Savior.
0:19:00 Identify what is important about the meeting
0:19:18 Identify “how” we will be together: (1) There’s always room for the Savior (2) Recognize we see things differently
0:20:30 Three or four questions always help to create clarity: (1) “What are you noticing…” or “I’m noticing…” (2) “What’s important about that?” (3) “What does it mean?” (4) “Now what do we do about it” (“Why?When? How?”)
0:22:58 What do you do when you’re in a meeting and you realize that you’re not tracking what is being said? Many remain silent.
0:24:00 Feeling confusion in a meeting may be a spiritual prompting that others are confused. Consider that speaking up will likely help others in the room, not just yourself.
0:24:35 Going into meetings, agree about how we are going to “be” together. Set up ground rules for how we will conduct the meetings and participate.
0:26:17 Google experiment: The number one thing contributing to high-performing teams – cohesive and agile – was psychological safety.
0:27:17 There’s nothing more intimidating that being one of three women in a room with 15 men in their suits.

Bishop Devin Pope leads the fastest-growing and most-baptizing ward in North America, located in Southside Chicago. He discusses his experiences and innovative approaches to missionary work, particularly in a diverse and densely-populated area with over a million residents.
Devin recounts his journey from serving as a ward mission leader to becoming bishop, emphasizing the importance of community engagement through events that welcome families into the church without a proselytizing agenda. He describes various successful community events, such as movie nights, indoor carnivals, and a popular haunted house that attracts thousands of attendees each year. These events aim to create a sense of belonging and familiarity with the church, ultimately leading to increased interest in church attendance. He also addresses the challenges of retaining new converts, highlighting the need for the church to provide meaningful support and assistance to families, particularly single mothers and migrants, who often face significant struggles.
Devin emphasizes the importance of creating a welcoming environment during sacrament meetings and adapting the format to engage attendees better. He shares strategies for making church services more dynamic and inclusive, such as varying the types of talks and encouraging participation from all members, regardless of their background. The discussion culminates in a focus on the recent influx of migrants to Chicago, with Devin advocating for compassion and support for these new neighbors, regardless of political views. This conversation serves as a powerful reminder of the church's mission to love and serve all individuals, fostering a sense of community and belonging within the church.

Wow! Excellent episode!
Such a great episode. Wonderful suggestions for anxiety.
Loved this podcast! It was so enlightening to see how lots of us feel like we need that certain and very powerful testimony to be in the church. Heath sounded so humble and was considering coming back even if he didn't "know" everything! Did he and his family ever come back to church?
Wow! What am amazing man. I learned so many good leadership principles I’m going to have to listen again with my notepad open.
best most comforting thoughts I've ever heard on Grace and repentance!! #healing
What a fabulous and vulnerable presentation! This is destined to become a top ten.
❤💚💜💙 love this episode!! Insightful and inspiring. I can't wait to share some of these concepts w the youth that I serve. Thank you for the work that you do to prepare these podcasts. My life has been blessed because of them.
This was my mission! I know Denis! 😁
This is a powerful podcast. KaRyn Lay's podcast is a favorite already and hearing her share the secrets behind good stories and how we can use them in our wards and leadership is super helpful. I am already thinking about the stories in my life that I can share with my ward, my youth, my Elders quorum, and more. Thank you!
How do I register for the life star broadcast that you spoke about in May?
While I enjoyed the overall content of this podcast, I found myself driving angrily listening to it because it was EXACTLY like being in a ward council meeting with the men/or one particular male voice taking over and failing to give equal time to the female in the room. A great reminder of why I avoid callings that put me in voiceless situations.
my comment is more of a question. How do we do this goal-setting value establishment with regards to the new Children & youth program where it's all about setting goals in four different areas of your life
One of the greatest interviews I've heard. Amazing.
Thank you for the podcast addressing pornography and Relief Society. I was able to talk to my husband about my struggles with pornography when we were planning to get married in 1994. I have never heard it talked about in Relief Society in this way. I commend these young women.
