I've not seen my uncle much since I arrived. I am glad because he's got a violent temper and treats my aunt badly. This morning, I've been exploring the country around the inn… There is nothing but heather and grass for miles. In the distance I can see the marsh. It was in this wild and lonely land that my uncle lived as a boy with his two brothers. Last night he told me their story. Joss If you had lived here, you would have taken to drink, like I did… it makes you do things. I had a family once: a father, mother, two brothers, but each one of them disappeared one way or another. My father was hanged. He killed a man. My brother Jem is clever – but they'll catch him, too and hang him. My brother Matthew – well, he drowned in the marsh. They found him one summer when the marsh dried up… Mary narrator When I get back to the inn my uncle is there... Joss Well, did you miss me? Mary Did you have a nice trip? Joss Nice, be damned. I've been riding for four days. There was a bit of money in

Arthur Jamie Phelps… Between you and me, he’s a bit of a rascal that one, but I’m sure I mustn’t judge. Callie In what way, Mr Montgomery? Arthur Oh, call me Arthur, please. Callie Arthur, in what way did you mean that Jamie Phelps is a rascal? Arthur Oh you know… the usual sort of thing. We’ve had some good nights at the Groucho club that’s all… Although, I’m sure he’s settled down now. He’s a good man. Nikesh How long have you been Mr Phelps’s client Mr… Arthur? Arthur A long time. Ten years? You see, I had a restaurant in town - that was when he was part of KPL and he looked after our accounts. Then he lured me away when he struck out on his own. Rascal! Callie Mr Montgomery, when did you last speak to Jamie? Arthur We spoke this morning. Which I believe is why I’m here? Nikesh And what did you talk about if you don’t mind my asking? Arthur Oh he was after my paperwork. And quite right too. I can be a bit slapdash when it comes to keeping records and whatnot. It’s all a bit tedious,

Transcript Narrator Hello, welcome back to Tip Top Trading where Anna is going downstairs to speak to warehouse manager, Mr Ingle. You’re looking a bit nervous… Anna I am. Denise says if I speak to him in the wrong way, he might bite my head off! Narrator Relax Anna. It’s just an expression to mean he might be a bit aggressive. Anna Oh! Narrator You’ll be fine, just use the right polite phrases… oh, and smile! Anna OK, I will. Oh look here I am… (Warehouse door opens) Anna Mr Ingle, are you there? I’d be most grateful if you could give me some… oh, what’s that smell… and smoke… Mr Ingle! Mr Ingle Oh, oh (coughs) Anna Mr Ingle. You’re smoking! Mr Ingle Well… it’s my lunch break… so I’m allowed to smoke a cigarette, aren’t I? Anna Really? Are you sure? Narrator No, he’s not Anna! Smoking inside a public building is illegal – it’s against the law. It’s dangerous too - you’ve got to do something about this. Anna Oh right. Mmm, er, Mr Ingle, you mustn’t smoke… it’s wrong. Mr Ingle Says who?
