When American Idol first premiered in the June 2002 it quickly became a surprise summer hit. That September, over 23 million people turned in to the season finale as Kelly Clarkson was crowned our first American Idol. But after 22 seasons, today's Idol's viewership pales by comparison. The most recent February 2024 premiere clocked in with just 4 million viewers. And despite many reboots, network changes and rotating judges, the most recent winners have failed to make their mark. Lauryn Hill burst onto the music scene in 1996 as a member of the Fugees. But it was Lauryn's 1998 solo debut The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill that put her on the map. With over 12 million albums sold worldwide it went on to sweep the 1998 Grammys as Lauryn became the first woman to win 5 or more awards in one night including Grammys for best new artist, best r&b album and album of the year.
