Lesson Learned

Previously "Am I Ready?”, welcome to version 2.0: Lesson Learned. The podcast where wild, weird, and wonderful stories take centre stage. No life coaches, no fluff, just real people sharing the stories that changed their lives and helped them grow. Got a story? Step up to the mic.

Am I ready to face my relationship fears? Let’s talk relationship doubts and whether they’re normal

Is this enough? Are we happy? Is this going to last? Are they the one? Hello intrusive thoughts, you’re not alone if you have doubts in your relationship, even if things are great with your partner. Let’s talk about how our brains are wired and speak some of these fears out loud to release any guilt we may feel for thinking them in the first place. If you feel restlessness on any level in your relationship, this isn’t necessarily a red flag to run the other way and never look back. You could have anxious tendencies, be facing limiting beliefs, or struggling with thought patterns you didn’t even know you have. Hear us out, there is absolutely a time to tune into yourself and listen to your intuition - you know if you’re being mistreated or not feeling fulfilled and we need to call this out. But if you find yourself wondering why your brain sometimes creates scenarios and doubts in your mind, despite being in a happy and loving relationship, then this episode is for you. Am I ready for the hot seat? Listener Q&A: Your questions answered by Ali and Ellie

You asked, we answered. Thanks for being absolute legends (and deep thinkers like us) and asking us some juicy questions that we got to sit down and answer on this week’s episode. We didn’t want this episode to be yet another ‘wrap up of 2023’ style episode topped with bragging rights and the like. Why? Because this time of year is often one that draws out the hustle culture in us, and our philosophy has always been to not let that narrative drive our minds or our actions. But instead this ep gave us a chance to reflect on the important things like why we started the pod, our values and aspirations with this passion project, and how much we enjoy connecting with you.A few highlights include the challenges faced when sharing online and a long list of everything we’re fortunate enough to get out of Am I ready. As always, we have our Reflection Section featuring carefully curated journal prompts to help you along this journey with us. This week’s prompts we hope will bring your awareness to how awesome you are and that you are enough; however you managed to make it through this year and (almost) out the other side.

Am I ready to have a baby? The guy’s perspective: hearing from our partners on this big question and why they may or may not be ready

If you’re somewhere on this journey with your partner, this is the episode for you. We quizzed the boys on whether or not they feel ready for this next chapter and what specifically plays on their minds when weighing it up. Speaking from our own experience, we are often quick to assume everything is about us and that our partners aren’t ready because of a list of reasons that might not be the case at all. While this is the type of conversation usually had between a couple and generally behind closed doors, we hope we can offer some reassurance by bringing you this unfiltered perspective.Plus an exciting pregnancy announcement!!Listen with or send this to your partner, and please let us know if this is a relatable one for you.

Am I ready to accept my family for who they are? An honest perspective on navigating tricky or complex family dynamics

This one is for those of us who have a complicated or messy family dynamic and can appreciate that blood relations can be a sore point. Where does this picture-perfect idea of family come from, and how realistic are our expectations?Let’s scrap “perfect” and normalise everything in between and focus on what is within our control when it comes to the family unit.

Am I ready to let go of my past and forgive myself? Dealing with guilt, hurting others, and tools to help you let go of anything weighing you down

Drawing from our personal experiences, we explore the journey of self-forgiveness and letting go. Guilt, disappointment, and emotional attachments from the past can be all-consuming at times; we’ve been there. We discuss details of our stories and tools that have helped us move on. Our minds are magical and have far more important things to do than dwell on the past, but that’s easier said than done, right? This episode helps you get on your way to mental and emotional clarity so you feel lighter and more in control of your thoughts and emotions, giving you the space to focus your energy on the things that matter most to you now instead of fixating on something that happened years ago (don’t worry, we get it!).

Am I ready to identify my life & relationship pillars? Your new secret weapon to feeling balanced and focusing your priorities

What is a pillar? It all starts with core values. Knowing your values and non-negotiables will help you to feel sure of yourself, increase emotional awareness, and have a greater sense of clarity in your life. When you feel “off” it can sometimes be difficult to pinpoint exactly what is setting you off. Or maybe you know what it is that triggered you - but why? Life pillars are the foundational structures of your life made up of the things most important to you. If these foundations aren’t stable, you may feel off-balanced or in turmoil. Knowing your pillars is the secret power you didn’t know you needed. They say the grass is greener where you water it - let’s focus our energy where it counts.

Am I ready for a long distance or FIFO relationship? Love languages, boundaries, navigating conflict and communicating your needs

Ready or not, you may have found yourself in long-distance love or flying off the handles in a fly-in-fly-out relationship. We have both navigated our way through the intricate dynamics of long-distance and the stress it can put on our lives, and we’re here to help with the tools and advice we searched for but couldn’t find in our times of need. We lay out the foundational groundwork we’ve done that ALL partnerships can benefit from, even those who aren't spending much time apart. We also share funny moments and totally irrational thoughts we’ve had along the way because nutbag moments are real and normal, and the psycho in all of us should never feel alone.

Am I ready to have a baby? Can you ever be ready? Age, hormone health, parenting values, your relationship with yourself and with your partner

One of us is ready for this new chapter, while the other is feeling the pressure of being a woman in her thirties (and all that comes with that), wanting to pause time for a little and enjoy the present. In this episode we explore the immense pressure we feel to have this answer all figured out when our lives are entangled with things like PCOS and hormone imbalances, unhelpful fertility advice from doctors, new relationships, and the stress of that biological clock. We talk honestly about what having a baby might realistically mean for us and our relationships (the good and the bad), and question the expectations we feel around this topic.

Am I ready to accept myself and love who I am? Unpacking self-doubt vs. self-worth, body positivity, beauty standards and limiting beliefs

Picture your younger self before the world told you who you should be. We bet you couldn’t imagine speaking to mini-you the way you might speak to yourself now. We believe the ability to love and accept ourselves the way we do others is already within us. We just need a little help to override our critical inner voice (that b*tch) and reprogram our negative thought patterns. Any learned behaviour can be unlearned, so let’s dive into the practical steps we can take today to repaint the picture of how we see ourselves.

Am I ready to find my purpose? Self-worth, the meaning of purpose (debunked) and understanding what matters to you

Do you jump out of bed every morning with total clarity on exactly what your purpose in life is and feel complete alignment in everything you do? No, neither do we. Today we’ll be unpacking some big questions about this buzzword. What does purpose even mean? Should I have it? Why do I feel so much pressure to have it? How do I cultivate it in my own life? This ep is here to make you feel GOOD about yourself and your life, and won’t leave you scrambling to do more. We guarantee it. Learn about your purpose and what ours might be collectively as human beings, without the unrealistic expectations and overwhelming pressure to have it all figured out that so often surrounds this topic.

Part 2: A Strict Church Upbringing Wasn't For Me. What Led Me to Leave the Church & How I Found My Freedom

In this episode, we hear from Sarah, who grew up in a strict Pentecostal church where being “worldly” was something to be avoided for a committed believer. While there were positives to being part of such a close-knit community, Sarah eventually began to question the version of reality she was taught to believe. This journey of self-discovery led her to break away from the church, seeking freedom and her own definition of a fulfilled and balanced life.Although many values from her upbringing remain a part of her, Sarah’s perspective on faith has shifted as she has chosen a way of life that embraces love and acceptance, leaving behind the fear and shame that once defined her beliefs.Want more? Am I ready to stop taking things personally? Breaking down the different things we all take personally and why some things get to us more than others.

Voted on as the next topic to dive into by our group chat, this is hands down an area we’re still working through and definitely don't have the answers to.In this episode, Ali & Ellie dive into the different types of things we take personally and the underlying reasons why these might trigger us so much. We work through a checklist of things that we can all take personally in our professional and personal lives, and the underlying insecurities we think drive this reaction for each of us.We wrap with a couple of techniques we’ve found helpful to guide self-reflection on this topic; like how to navigate our own blind spots and confiding in loved ones to share the load.  Don’t forget it’s not too late to join us in our 30-day Vulnerability Challenge!
