Description
The following narrative includes excerpts from of a collection of testimonies and interviews entitled “Let's Talk About It Anywhere In The World...”, where it is all about people's voices, accents and speech patterns, hand in hand with my own personal anecdotes and observations. In addition to that, people are allowed to introduce themselves in their respective, often indigenous, languages and dialects, and to speak their minds freely, without any paraphrases or expectations.
So, let the story go on from there...

It's Friday, with its typical evening frenzy. So, I try to give it sort of a cultural touch by attending a so-called webinar which pretty much consists of an online poetry reading session in this case. One of the performers is a poet by the name of Taylor Johnson who reads excerpts from a recently published book and answers questions coming from the online audience. Something in Taylor Johnson's poetry appeals to me for whatever reason. And so, a couple of weeks later, I decide to reach out and ask for an interview. The use of pronouns on Taylor Johnson's website makes their identity as a transgender poet clear. But, other than that, the poetry I check out is pretty comprehensive and conjures up travel images, almost like poetic postcards. And so, months after the online reading session, Taylor and I are in touch and set up a schedule for an online conversation. And it will be a wonderful experience and exchange of enlightened thoughts, ideas, and stories, with no room for issues and identities as topics. In addition to that, I'm proud to conclude that Taylor Johnson and I end the conversation as friends. And the chat itself is a journey, quite literally speaking. Taylor Johnson is sitting in a car using a friend's smartphone to connect, while they are driving to a small town in rural Minnesota. So, I make sure to include the road trip in our online conversation. We use our respective webcams only at the very beginning of the recording and quickly switch to audio to reduce battery consumption and to make the talk more convenient and comfortable for all of us, in different parts of the world. --- So, the following narrative includes excerpts from a collection of testimonies and interviews entitled “Let's Talk About It Anywhere In The World...”, where it is all about people's voices, accents and speech patterns, hand in hand with my own personal anecdotes and observations. In addition to that, people are allowed to introduce themselves in their respective, often indigenous, languages and dialects, and to speak their minds freely, without any paraphrases or expectations. So, let the story go on from there... --- Taylor Johnson is from Washington, DC. They are the author of Inheritance (Alice James Books, 2020), winner of the 2021 Norma Farber First Book Award from the Poetry Society of America. The bio on her website describes Shara McCallum as a woman of Jamaican and Venezuelan descent, but that doesn't even scratch the surface of her diverse ethnic background. As a matter of fact, it reflects the frequently cruel and brutal process of cultural blending which occurred during the colonial era, especially on the Caribbean islands. As a consequence, a country like Jamaica isn't just about Reggae, Rastafari and Ska. Different languages and dialects are spoken on the island, including Creole, Scots, and Patois. The latter is a little known language which Shara grew up with and even recites two nursery rhymes in as part of our conversation. So, our online interview goes beyond asking questions and giving answers. It frequently goes back and forth in terms of sharing stories and experiences, even a verse that came to me in a dream the night before our online talk. --- Shara McCallum was born in Jamaica to an African Jamaican father and a Venezuelan mother and moved to the United States with her family when she was nine. She earned a BA from the University of Miami, an MFA from the University of Maryland, and a PhD from Binghamton University. Her collections of poetry, published in the US and UK, include No Ruined Stone (2021). McCallum’s poems and essays have appeared in journals, anthologies, and textbooks throughout the US, Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, and Israel. In addition to Spanish, her poems have been translated into Italian, French, Romanian, Turkish, and Dutch and have been set to music by composers Marta Gentilucci and Gity Razaz. She is a Liberal Arts Professor of English at Penn State University and, from 2003-17, served as the director of the Stadler Center for Poetry at Bucknell University. McCallum has received a poetry fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Witter Bynner Award from the Library of Congress, and other distinctions. In 2018, she was awarded the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature for poetry. --- https://sharamccallum.com/ --- At the moment, Radio Aula Mundi is an evolving podcast station where no language and all languages are spoken… It’s a multilingual mix of music, poetry, lectures, languages, interviews, documentaries, recipes, and a lot more, co-produced with the students of the ‘Aula Mundi International Cultural Center’… --- Radio Aula Mundi Centro Cultural & Turistico Aula Mundi Aula Mundi Cultural Travel Centerhttps://radioaulamundi.bandcamp.com/ https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/radio-aula-mundi/id1584156605 https://www.amazon.com/author/marcorixecker Spotify YouTube https://castbox.fm/channel/Let's-talk-about-it%2C-anywhere-in-the-world...-id4725033?country=us BreakerPlayer FM Facebook Radio Aula Mundi
Sometimes the best things happen when there are no plans, and you've got to go with the flow. So, let me tell you a story about a day that starts with disaster. First, a professional appointment gets canceled. A couple of more mishaps later, I just decide to stick to my daily routine with no further ambitions. One of the presumably more predictable things I do is to send several people a reminder about interviews I had requested a while ago. Five minutes into that task I get a response from a man by the name of Dallas Hunt. All I remember about him at this point is that he is a First Nations author, poet, and educator belonging to the Cree Nation of Canada. The extension of his email address also reminds me of the fact that he teaches at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC. And so, that very same day he and I email each other back and forth, until he sends me a message asking me a simple question: “Are you free now?” I'm totally unprepared, and so, Dallas Hunt and I keep emailing back and forth. I try to make an appointment with him even the same day, but about half an hour to an hour later, so that I'd be able to prepare some questions. But his replies pretty much boil down to that recurrent question: “Are you free now?” And that is right now. Eventually, there is silence, and no more feedback comes from Dallas Hunt. So, I pretty much give up on the interview with him and try to go about my daily business taking a two-hour walk through town sitting down on a bench in a city park across a scenic canal from some older buildings. And the urban beauty surrounding me sort of inspires and motivates me to get to a place where I can pick up a public Wi-Fi signal and check if Dallas Hunt has gotten back to me anyway, but he hasn’t. And so, the afternoon comes to an end and fades into evening. I get some shopping done and eventually go back to my place. I sit down in my favorite armchair and try to relax a little bit turning on the internet on my smartphone. And here it is, an email from Dallas Hunt, and guess what it says… “Are you free now?” It was sent approximately five minutes earlier. And so, this time I decide to seize the opportunity and go for it. So, I send Dallas a message saying: “Sure. Let's do it.” And here we are, a couple of minutes later, chatting on Zoom. So, the following narrative includes excerpts from a collection of testimonies and interviews entitled “Let’s Talk About It Anywhere In The World…”, where it is all about people’s voices, accents and speech patterns, hand in hand with my own personal anecdotes and observations. In addition to that, people are allowed to introduce themselves in their respective, often indigenous, languages and dialects, and to speak their minds freely, without any paraphrases or expectations. So, let the story go on from there… --- Dallas Hunt is Cree and a member of Wapsewsipi (Swan River First Nation) in Treaty 8 territory in Northern Alberta, Canada. He has had creative and critical work published in the Malahat Review, Arc Poetry, Canadian Literature, and the American Indian Culture and Research Journal. His first children’s book, Awâsis and the World-Famous Bannock, was published through Highwater Press in 2018, and was nominated for the Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Canadian Picture Book Award. His teaching and research interests include Indigenous literature, Indigenous theory & politics, Canadian Literature, speculative fiction, settler colonial studies, and environmental justice. --- https://languagesciences.ubc.ca/news-events/announcement-research-news-story/jul-22-2021-how-hunt-bannock-inspired-cree-language https://harbourpublishing.com/collections/dallas-hunt https://theconversation.com/profiles/dallas-hunt-1270808 --- So, the following narrative includes excerpts from a collection of testimonies and interviews entitled “Let's Talk About It Anywhere In The World...”, where it is all about people's voices, accents and speech patterns, hand in hand with my own personal anecdotes and observations. Lee Ranaldo is a child of the sixties and seventies, one of the most energetic time periods in modern history, as he likes to put it. Even up until now hasn't anybody really grasped the impact of an era of cultural effervescence and fertility. As a cultural maker and shaker himself, Lee Ranaldo keeps dwelling on the part he has to play in the general culture. He simply introduces himself as a visual artist and musician. And, as such, he strives to challenge moral standards, which he refers to as the morality of the law. In general, it tends to lag behind the standards of a younger contemporary generation by about 40 to 50 years, he explains. And the upheavals of the 1960's and 1970's stood up against that. Lee Ranaldo and the iconic band he was a member of for many years, Sonic Youth, stand for this generational call for freedom. --- http://www.leeranaldo.com/ --- So, the following narrative includes excerpts from a collection of testimonies and interviews entitled “Let's Talk About It Anywhere In The World...”, where it is all about people's voices, accents and speech patterns, hand in hand with my own personal anecdotes and observations. Researching international and traditional music for various kinds of radio projects I sort of stumble upon a YouTube channel one evening. And there is a clip in which a woman by the first name of Daria and with an unpronounceable last name performs a children's song in Quechua, the predominant indigenous language in Peru. So, I bookmark the website and let it rest for a while, in a manner of speaking. Then, weeks, maybe even months, later, I go back to that YouTube channel and explore it a bit more. Finally I come to the conclusion that the woman behind that project must be a real character and would be nice to do an interview with. So, I use a contact link on her website to send her an interview request which gets a quick response. Eventually, on a hot summer evening, we sit down in different parts of the world to have a nice chat for quite a while. Daria is speaking from a little home studio in a farm in rural Pennsylvania... --- https://www.youtube.com/user/DariaMusic https://www.dariamusic.com/ --- So, the following narrative includes excerpts from a collection of testimonies and interviews entitled “Let's Talk About It Anywhere In The World...”, where it is all about people's voices, accents and speech patterns, hand in hand with my own personal anecdotes and observations. In the first place, Emily Jane White is a memory of two things; one being an iconic song of hers which alternative radio stations would tend to play quite frequently, and the other being an acquaintance's recommendation that I go see one of her shows in France, which she has many affiliations with. Quite a while later, I would get the opportunity to do so. And I do remember that it wasn't really a good day, but her performance saved the evening for me. I was really absorbed by the intensity of Emily Jane White's art, craft, and skills as a songwriter. Then, a couple of years later, I seize the occasion of the release of a recent album of hers to reach out and see if she would like to do an online interview allowing us to communicate from two different parts of the world. --- https://emilyjanewhite.net/ --- So, the following narrative includes excerpts from a collection of testimonies and interviews entitled “Let's Talk About It Anywhere In The World...”, where it is all about people's voices, accents and speech patterns, hand in hand with my own personal anecdotes and observations.
