Description

LibriVox is a hope, an experiment, and a question: can the net harness a bunch of volunteers to help bring books in the public domain to life? LibriVox wants all books in the public domain to be available, for free, in audio format, on the internet. We are a totally volunteer, open source, free content, public domain project. We get most of our texts from Project Gutenberg. The Internet Archive hosts our audio files. Send comments and questions to info@librivox.org and visit our catalog at http://librivox.org/newcatalog/

The readers may be amateurs, but their love for the medium and content is apparent, and their oral reading skills are quite good. The variety of accents is intriguing. I really enjoyed "PSmith in the City"... It made me want to volunteer as a reader!

I have given Librivox a couple tries and am on the fence about it. While I very much appreciate the gift of literature and love the idea of volunteers reading our beloved pieces...It can be a frustrating listen. It gives one a very patched and pieced together feel. Not the best experience.

Go to their website to get more titles not listed on iTunes. This place is a treasure trove of goodies. In order to read a great number in classics in as little time as possible without loosing meaning especially in the duller classics (like Pilgrim's Progress), I have found that LibriVox.org 's free audio books on classics (fiction, poetry, nonfiction, drama) is an incredibly powerful tool. I read the book along with the audio and my comprehension and concentration are enhanced while it takes me a lot less time to get through the novel overall -- fewer breaks. I love that I can access their site (librivox.org) pick a book, click on the link to subscribe in iTunes and it zooms into my computer.
