How to Find Photos on Your iPhone Using the Map & Collections Tab
Have you ever known exactly where a photo was taken—but had no idea when you took it or how to find it again?
In this Tiny Task episode of Sort-It-Out, Amanda takes you inside the Collections tab in the iPhone Photos app and shows how it can become one of your favourite little photo-finding tools. From Apple-generated collections like Selfies, Documents, Screenshots, and Duplicates to the surprisingly fun Map view, this area can help you search for photos using the pieces of a memory you actually recall.
Amanda shares how she used the Selfies collection, an in-collection search for “poster,” and the Map view to track down more photos of her kids in front of movie posters—photos she knew existed but hadn’t been able to find through a regular search alone.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
What the Collections tab is and where to find it in the iPhone Photos app
How Apple automatically groups photos by themes, including Selfies, Documents, Screenshots, and more
How to search within a specific collection to narrow your results
How to use the Map view to find photos based on where they were taken
Why some photos may not appear on the map
How captions, Search, Collections, and Map view can work together as your own photo detective tools
Your Tiny Task: Open the Collections tab, find the Map view, and choose one meaningful location to explore—home, the cottage, a favourite vacation destination, a school, a sports field, or a family member’s house. Let the map take you back.

How to Add Searchable Captions to Your iPhone Photos
Have you ever found a photo once—only to struggle to find it again later?
If you missed the main episode in this series, you can listen to it here: [LISTEN HERE]
In our last Tiny Task, we explored how descriptive searches such as “kids playing in the snow” or “sunset in Mexico” can help narrow thousands of photos down to the ones you’re actually looking for.
But what happens when the words you naturally use to describe a photo aren’t details your iPhone can recognize?
In this episode, we’re levelling up our iPhone search skills by adding our own searchable captions. A simple caption such as “Movie Poster” or “Mom’s Garden” can give a photo the personal context Apple could never know on its own—and make it much easier to retrieve in the future.
In this Tiny Task, you’ll learn:
Why descriptive, multi-word searches can be more useful than single-word searches
How captions can make photos easier to find
How to add, change or remove a caption on your iPhone
Why the best caption is often the phrase your own brain will remember
How to copy and paste the same caption onto several photos
Why you don’t need a perfectly organized collection to make your memories more accessible
How captions can help you return to photos you want to share, print, frame or use in a future project
Your Tiny Task:
Use the Search tool to find a photo you would like to retrieve again.
Open the photo and swipe up.
Tap Add a Caption.
Enter a short word or phrase you’re likely to remember.
Return to Search and try using your new caption.
This is not an invitation to caption your entire Photos Library. Choose one meaningful photo—or one small group of related photos—and give yourself a useful way to find it again.
Because the goal isn’t always a perfectly organized photo collection.
Sometimes, the goal is simply a collection you can access, enjoy and use.
Pick one. Tiny Task it. Call it a win.

Stop Scrolling: Use Your iPhone Photos Search Bar
You know the photo is in there somewhere—but finding it can feel impossible when you’re scrolling through years of memories, screenshots, videos, recipes, memes, and everyday life.
In this Tiny Task, we’re showing you how to use the search feature in your iPhone Photos app to find what you need faster. Instead of relying on dates or endless scrolling, try searching with the clues you remember: a person, place, activity, object, season, flower, or event.
Think: “kids playing in snow,” “P!nk concert,” “lilacs,” “margarita,” or “toddler running.”
Your Photos app can often recognize much more than you realize—and playing with the search bar when you’re not in a rush is the best way to learn what works in your own library.
Your Tiny Task
Open the Photos app, tap the magnifying glass search icon, and try searching for a few photos or videos you would love to find again.
Use the clues you remember, have a little fun with it, and see what memories pop up.
You do not need to organize your entire photo library before you can find one meaningful photo. Sometimes you have an organizing problem—and sometimes you just need a better finding tool.

Stop Scrolling: How to Find a Photo on Your iPhone
Have you ever known exactly what a photo looked like but had absolutely no idea when you took it—or where it was hiding?
In this episode, Kristi and Amanda begin the third and final question in their Top iPhone Questions series: How do I find a photo on my iPhone?
Before diving in, they catch up on their summer memories and discuss the pressure to capture everything, the value of everyday photos, and the fun of seeing your family’s story through someone else’s camera.
Then, they explore how the way we use our iPhone cameras has changed. Our Photos Libraries no longer hold only family memories—they’re also filled with receipts, recipes, school schedules, parking spots, screenshots, products, and countless other pieces of visual information.
Thankfully, your iPhone already has tools that can help you find what you need without scrolling through thousands of photos.
In this episode, you’ll hear about:
Searching for photos using the details you remember
How your iPhone recognizes people, places, objects, events, and text
Why a search like “dog in the water” may actually work
What happened when Kristi tried searching for an old Minion costume
Why Search is helpful—but isn’t a replacement for an organized photo collection
Exploring the useful features inside the Collections tab
Using searchable captions to add clues your iPhone cannot recognize
Letting go of the pressure to photograph every moment perfectly
How a ten-minute Tiny Task can help you learn without becoming overwhelmed
Over the next three Tiny Task episodes, Kristi and Amanda will help you:
Search using the clues you remember
Explore the tools inside the Collections tab
Add searchable captions to meaningful photos
This series will also bring season one of Sorted-It-Out to a close. After a short break, Kristi and Amanda will return with season two on October 15, 2026.

Why Is My iPhone Full? Tiny Task: Clean Up Your Apps
When was the last time you looked at all the apps taking up space on your iPhone—not just the ones you use every day?
Hiding in that list might be an app you haven’t opened in months. Or, as Amanda recently discovered, it could be an app you use regularly that’s quietly holding onto far more storage than you realize.
In Amanda’s case, Apple Music was taking up 16 GB because an automatic download setting had somehow been turned on. She didn’t need to delete the app or remove the songs from her Apple Music library. After investigating what was happening, she changed the setting, deleted the unwanted local downloads, and freed up that storage almost instantly.
For the final Tiny Task in our Why Is My iPhone So Full? series, we’re going app hunting!
In this episode, we talk about:
How to see which apps are using the most storage on your iPhone
Why the app itself may not be the actual problem
How downloads and app settings can quietly consume storage
Amanda’s surprising 16 GB Apple Music discovery
The difference between offloading and deleting an app
How to turn on Offload Unused Apps
What to consider before deleting an app or its data
Why Kristi’s Candy Crush discovery did not lead to deleting Candy Crush
How small digital cleanup habits can prevent future storage emergencies
Tiny Task 1: Investigate Your Apps
Start here:
Settings → General → iPhone Storage
You’ll see an overview of your available storage and a list of your apps, typically ordered by how much space they’re using.
Look through the list and ask:
Is anything using more storage than I expected?
Do I still use this app?
Could the app be storing automatic downloads or offline content?
Is there a setting I can change instead of deleting the app?
Is there downloaded content I’m comfortable removing?
Don’t assume that a large app needs to be deleted. Investigate what’s happening inside it first.
Tiny Task 2: Review Offload Unused Apps
To find this setting, go to:
Settings → Apps → App Store → Offload Unused Apps
When this is turned on, your iPhone can automatically remove apps you aren’t using while keeping their documents and data. You can reinstall an offloaded app later, provided it is still available in the App Store.
This setting won’t be the right choice for everyone, so decide whether you prefer automatic offloading or manually managing your apps.
Tiny Task 3: Delete an App You No Longer Want
If you find an app you know you’re ready to remove:
Touch and hold the app.
Tap Remove App.
Choose Delete App.
Confirm your decision.
Remember that Remove from Home Screen does not delete the app. It only removes the icon from your Home Screen while leaving the app in your App Library.
Before deleting an app, consider whether it contains saved projects, progress, files, or other information you may want to keep. What happens to that information varies depending on the app and whether the data is connected to an account or stored elsewhere.

The Biggest Takeaway
You don’t have to clean up every app today.
Simply open your iPhone Storage settings, look around, and choose one small action. Investigate one app, change one setting, remove one unwanted download, or delete one app you no longer need.
Pick one. Tiny Task it. Call it a win.
