We have three daughters, and a great conversation starter for when they walked in the door from school was to ask them what their favorite thing was that had happened to them that day. Asking how their day went was asking for them to be more likely to bring up the things they didn't like, accentuating the negative. I preferred to have them focus on the good things, and it truly made their conversations much more full, complete, and wide-ranging.
