I had the pleasure of chatting to Débora Umbelino, known as Surma, a Portuguese one-woman band who surrounds herself with a plethora of instruments including guitar, keyboard, synthesizer, drum machine and loop pedal. Over the last couple of years she has played over 200 shows in over 16 different cities around the world, including the South By Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas, where was selected by NPR as one the best discoveries of 2018. Michael is also the bassist in Queens of the Stone Age. Lisbon Live had the privilege of attending Glastonbury Festival in the UK, the largest greenfield festival in the world, and chatted to the following bands/artists: Will Varley - A folk singer-songwriter from the UK who has sold out shows all over Europe and has a penchant for crafting songs which combine personal storytelling with political statements. Dream Wife - Named after a 1953 romantic comedy, London trio Dream Wife make a cheeky, sugar-coated mixture of garage rock and roll, punk, and ambient pop with a strong message about gender equality. Frank Turner - Frank Turner is a singer and songwriter of 'folk-punk' songs drawing comparisons to Billy Bragg and Bruce Springsteen, however he nonetheless occupies a niche of his own in British popular music, and has developed a large international following. Beans on Toast - Beans On Toast (aka Jay MacCallister) is a British folk singer from Essex, UK, who rose to prominence out of the UK folk scene in 2005. He is well known for his self-deprecating and honest songwriting, which openly deals with variety of topics. On March 9th 2019 Frank Turner came to Portugal for the first time ever to play two shows in Lisbon and Porto respectively. Lisbon Live had the privilege of chatting to the 'folk punk' singer before his set at Music Box in Lisbon. I had a chat with Joanna Hecker who, along with her co-founder Ricardo Lopes, have been bringing music from around the globe into the living rooms of Lisbon via monthly 'secret' concerts where the location is only revealed a day or two before. Listen in as I chat about where the idea came from, how the project is run as well as musical highlights from the past 4 years. Tracks during segment by Surma and Maria Gadú. I also had a chat with Bartholomew Ryan and Giulia Gallina of Lisbon-based international collective, The Loafing Heroes, whose members are from Portugal, Germany, Ireland, Italy and USA. After playing at Nos Alive Festival and self-funding their new album, the 'dream-folkers' are ready to release their new body of work (the title of which is exclusively revealed in the episode) and play live shows this year. On October 13th there was a special one-off edition of Sofar Sounds in Portugal where 27 concerts took place simultaneously around 9 cities in Portugal, and guests were transported to secret locations being picked up in Mini vehicles. Venues were scattered throughout the country including Lisbon, Coimbra and Porto, and Lisbon Live travelled to Faro in the Algarve for an unforgettable night of music from three of the most exciting up and coming artists in Portugal! I chatted to vibrant electro-pop band Whales who are crafting a name for themselves in Portugal as one of the most exciting live bands around; Time For T who formed in Brighton (UK) fusing elements of folk, indie and Afro-rhythms; and the youthful Portuguese rapper Russa bursting with attitude and passion.
