Title: Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr.: The Life and Legacy of the Patriarch Behind Americas Most Famous Political Dynasty
Author: Charles River Editors
Narrator: Scott Clem
Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 37 mins
Language: English
Release date: 12-06-17
Publisher: Charles River Editors
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Political Figures
Publisher's Summary:
"We have a rich man, untrained in diplomacy, unlearned in history and politics, who is a great publicity seeker and who apparently is ambitious to be the first Catholic president of the U.S." (British MP Josiah Wedgwoods description of Joe Kennedy Sr. as US ambassador to the United Kingdom)
In many ways John Fitzgerald Kennedy and his young family were the perfect embodiment of the '60s. The decade began with a sense of idealism, personified by the attractive Kennedy, his beautiful and fashionable wife, Jackie, and his young children. Months into his presidency, Kennedy exhorted the country to reach for the stars, calling upon the nation to send a man to the moon and back by the end of the decade.
In 1961, Kennedy made it seem like anything was possible, and Americans were eager to believe him. The Kennedy years were fondly and famously labeled Camelot by Jackie herself, suggesting an almost mythical quality about the young president and his family. As it turned out, the '60s closely reflected the glossy, idealistic portrayal of John F. Kennedy as well as the uglier truths. The country would achieve Kennedys goal of a manned moon mission, and the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 finally guaranteed minorities their civil rights and restored equality, ensuring that the country would live out the true meaning of its creed.
But the idealism and optimism of the decade was quickly shattered, starting with Kennedys assassination in 1963. The '60s were permanently marred by the Vietnam War, and by the time Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. were assassinated in 1968, the country was irreversibly jaded. The events of the decade produced protests and countercultures unlike anything the country had seen before.

Title: Making History: The Life of Barack Obama
Author: Charles River Editors
Narrator: Bill Hare
Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 49 mins
Language: English
Release date: 10-10-17
Publisher: Charles River Editors
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Political Figures
Publisher's Summary:
"In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted - for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame." (Barack Obama's Inaugural Address)
On November 4, 2008, 47-year-old Barack Obama walked onto the stage in Grant Park to deliver an Election Night speech less than an hour after he had been officially declared President-Elect of the United States. As he came out to an audience numbering in the hundreds of thousands, with millions more watching on television, the first African-American elected president in the nation's history told Americans, "If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer."
Although it was a reference to his historic election, the quote applied equally to the very unique path Obama took in life to reach that moment. Though he was still young by presidential standards, the biracial native of Hawaii had already traveled a great distance physically and spiritually, learning about himself and discovering his self-identity along the way. After receiving a blue chip education that took him to Harvard Law School and helped him become a law professor and community organizer in Chicago, he began a rapid ascent through state politics to become a US Senator in 2004.
To a degree, Obama's election in November 2008 was anti-climactic compared to the incredibly close victory he had over Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primaries. With 18.2 million votes total, Hillary Clinton had won more votes than any other candidate in the history of the presidential primaries, but it was Obama who won more delegates to become the first African-American nominated by either party. A few months later, he made more history by becoming the first African-American elected president.
Obama ran one of the greatest presidential campaigns in history, and he was helped by the fact that the Republicans were unpopular at the tail end of the Bush Administration.
Making History: The Life of Barack Obama chronicles the amazing life story and Obama's path to the presidency from his unique roots to his unique victory, but it also looks at his first term before the 2012 election. You will learn about Obama like you never have before, in no time at all.

Title: Becoming Jane Jacobs
Author: Peter L. Laurence
Narrator: Byrwec Ellison
Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 4 mins
Language: English
Release date: 08-22-17
Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Political Figures
Publisher's Summary:
Becoming Jane Jacobs is the first intellectual biography to focus on Jacobs's early life and writing career leading up to her great book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities.
Jane Jacobs is universally recognized as one of the most important figures in American urbanism, and The Death and Life of Great American Cities one of the most important books on cities. However, because of her David-versus-Goliath battles with "power broker" Robert Moses and the urban-renewal establishment, Jacobs has received more attention for being an activist than a thinker, despite having written a list of influential books on cities, economies, and other subjects.
In Becoming Jane Jacobs, Dr. Peter L. Laurence shows that what is missing from the stereotypes and myths is a critical examination of how Jacobs arrived at her ideas about city life. The audiobook shows that although Jacobs had only a high school diploma, she pursued a writing career that prepared her to become a nationally recognized architectural critic. Jacobs was immersed in an elite community of architects, city planners, and academics as an editor of the Time Inc. magazine Architectural Forum.
The audiobook is published by University of Pennsylvania Press.
"This audiobook is both a worthy tribute to Jacobs's genius, and a brilliant exposition of the broader context of designs and ideas that made her work possible." (Robert Fishman, University of Michigan).
"Deeply researched and richly illuminating, Laurence's audiobook will fundamentally change the way we think about Jacobs today." (Joan Ockman, editor of Architecture Culture 1943-1968: A Documentary Anthology).
"Adds immeasurably to our understanding of her rich, formative years in New York City." (Robert Wojtowicz, Old Dominion University).

Title: American Legends: The Life of Ronald Reagan
Author: Charles River Editors
Narrator: Colin Fluxman
Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 5 mins
Language: English
Release date: 08-02-17
Publisher: Charles River Editors
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Political Figures
Publisher's Summary:
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
In the famous movie Back to the Future, Marty McFly travels back to 1955, and, in an attempt to convince his friend Doc Brown that he is from 1985, tells the 1955 version of Doc Brown that Ronald Reagan is president. Doc looks at him incredulously and laughs, chortling, "Ronald Reagan? The actor?" Of course, the joke was on Doc Brown. In a story that could have come straight out of Hollywood, the golden actor went from the silver screen to California politics to become governor and eventually the 40th President. The 70-year-old former actor then went on to have one of the most consequential presidencies of the 20th century, unquestionably making him one of the most influential men of the last 50 years.
Reagan's name is still as relevant in American politics today, with every politician with an R next to his or her name trying to claim Ronald Reagan's conservative mantle. In the Republican presidential nomination debates in 2011, Reagan's name was invoked an average of over five times per debate, more than every other president combined. Meanwhile, Americans of all stripes continue to debate the merits of "Reaganomics" more than 30 years after Reagan was elected.

Title: Charging into Immortality
Subtitle: The Life and Legacy of George Pickett
Author: Charles River Editors
Narrator: Dan Gallagher
Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 3 mins
Language: English
Release date: 07-05-17
Publisher: Charles River Editors
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Political Figures
Publisher's Summary:
Before July 3, 1863, George Pickett was best known among his comrades for finishing last in his class at West Point, being a jocular but courageous soldier, and his carefully perfumed locks. As part of West Point's most famous Class of 1846, Pickett was classmates with men like Stonewall Jackson and George McClellan, and despite his poor class standing he distinguished himself fresh out of school during the Mexican-American War.
Pickett's reputation for bravery extended into the early years of the Civil War, to the extent that former West Point classmate George McClellan wrote, "Perhaps there is no doubt that he was the best infantry soldier developed on either side during the Civil War." A native Virginian, the impeccably styled Pickett represented all of the antebellum South's most cherished traits, and as such he was a "beau-ideal" Confederate soldier.
After proving himself a capable brigadier during the Peninsula Campaign, during which he was wounded and forced to recuperate, Pickett was given command of a division in Longstreet's corps of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, putting him in position for a rendez-vous with destiny. Today Pickett is best remembered for the charge that has taken his name and is now remembered as the most famous assault of the Civil War. Having failed to dislodge the Union Army of the Potomac on either flank during the first two days at Gettysburg, Lee ordered a charge of nearly 15,000 at the center of the lines.

Title: American Legends: The Life of John Quincy Adams
Author: Charles River Editors
Narrator: Scott Clem
Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 1 min
Language: English
Release date: 06-26-17
Publisher: Charles River Editors
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Political Figures
Publisher's Summary:
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
John Adams was one of his country's seminal Founding Fathers and one of its most experienced, distinguished diplomats and politicians. Few men in American history have a record anywhere near comparable, but one of them happened to be Adams's own son, John Quincy Adams. And yet, few Americans are familiar with him aside from the fact that he was his father's son and the sixth president of the United States.
John Quincy Adams set a lot of firsts for his country. In addition to being the first son of a president to become president himself, John Quincy Adams also managed to be a US senator, a US House representative, a secretary of state, and an ambassador to several countries. Though he is known primarily for his presidential races against Andrew Jackson, there is a general consensus among historians that he is one of America's greatest and most skilled diplomats, responsible for successes such as the Treaty of Ghent (which ended the War of 1812), the annexation of Florida from Spain, and the Monroe Doctrine.

Title: Reckless Bravery
Subtitle: The Life and Career of John Bell Hood
Author: Charles River Editors
Narrator: Scott Clem
Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 36 mins
Language: English
Release date: 06-08-17
Publisher: Charles River Editors
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Political Figures
Publisher's Summary:
The history of war is replete with examples of men who distinguished themselves in battle only to disgrace themselves after being promoted to commands above their capabilities. During the American Civil War, that man was John Bell Hood. Hood was one of the most tenacious generals in the Confederacy, for better and worse. This quality, which made him one of the best brigade and division commanders in the Army of Northern Virginia also made him ineffective when he was promoted to higher commands, forever marring his career at Atlanta and Franklin.
The intimidating Texan began to make a name for himself as a brigade commander in the Army of Northern Virginia under new commander Robert E. Lee during the Seven Days Battles in 1862, after which he was promoted to division command. For the next several campaigns, he led a division under General James Longstreet's I Corps., fighting at places like Antietam and Fredericksburg. Hood was in the thick of the action on day two at Gettysburg, suffering a bad wound that left his left arm permanently disabled. When Longstreet's command headed west, Hood suffered another wound at Chickamauga, leading to the amputation of his right leg.

Title: Patrick Henry
Subtitle: The Life and Legacy of the Founding Father and Virginia's First Governor
Author: Charles River Editors
Narrator: Jim D Johnston
Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 39 mins
Language: English
Release date: 06-07-17
Publisher: Charles River Editors
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Political Figures
Publisher's Summary:
The American Revolution is replete with seminal moments that every American learns in school, from the "shot heard 'round the world" to the Declaration of Independence, but the events that led up to the fighting at Lexington and Concord were borne out of 10 years of division between the British and their American colonies over everything from colonial representation in governments to taxation, the nature of searches, and the quartering of British regulars in private houses. From 1764-1775, a chain of events that included lightning rods like the Townshend Acts led to bloodshed in the form of the Boston Massacre, while the Boston Tea Party became a symbol of nonviolent protest. Of course, the Revolutionary era also produced some of the most famous Americans in history, and Patrick Henry has the ironic distinction of frequently being overlooked in comparison to his contemporaries while also being remembered for speaking one of the most famous lines in American history despite the fact he may never have actually said it. When Henry famously cried out "Give me liberty or give me death," he knew a surprising amount about both. He had known the liberty of running across open fields on warm Virginia mornings and of riding at breakneck speed across fields he owned. He had fought for, and won, the liberty of numerous clients he defended in Virginia's colonial courts. He had also taken the liberty of others, though for different reasons. He owned slaves and saw what it cost them to serve him each day, and he had even kept his own young wife in chains to prevent her from harming herself or one of their children.

Title: Father Charles Coughlin
Subtitle: The Life of the Controversial Catholic Priest Who Revolutionized Radio
Author: Charles River Editors
Narrator: Scott Clem
Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 11 mins
Language: English
Release date: 05-26-17
Publisher: Charles River Editors
Ratings: 2 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Political Figures
Publisher's Summary:
"The people have spoken and the only American thing to do is abide by the will of the people." (Father Coughlin)
Traditionally in American culture, members of the clergy have been among the most trusted people in the nation, while politicians have been the least trusted. So, one might ask, what happens when these two classes collide into the form of one person? The result, it appears from history, is rarely all good, perhaps due to the difficulty of reconciling the moral high ground with political mud.
For whatever reasons, clergymen rarely make good politicians, and there is perhaps no better example of this than Father Charles Coughlin, a Depression-era priest-turned-demagogue who was seen as an angel by some and a devil by others. Both viewpoints had plenty of reasons for their perspectives, for the same man who cruelly castigated the Jews also spoke eloquently on the needs and rights of the most downtrodden in society. The same orator who said, "Roosevelt or ruin", later cried, "Roosevelt and ruin." He was a radio priest who came to power after being victimized by the Ku Klux Klan and then used his power to spread racial hatred against others. He was a highly political Catholic who hated the first Catholic presidential candidate in American history.
Coughlin has always been a slippery subject to wrap one's mind around, and this was so even at the height of his power, but nobody can deny his influence. In the 1930s, his effective use of the radio revolutionized mass communications, and millions of people listened to his every word. It would have been impossible for well-known televangelists and religious figures like Jerry Falwell and Billy Graham to rise to national prominence without Coughlin setting the precedents decades earlier.
Father Charles Coughlin: The Life of the Controversial Catholic Priest Who Revolutionized Radio chronicles the colorful life of one of the most famous priests in American history. You will learn about Father Coughlin like never before, in no time at all.

Title: American Legends
Subtitle: The Life of the Kingfish, Huey Long
Author: Charles River Editors
Narrator: Scott Clem
Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 15 mins
Language: English
Release date: 05-23-17
Publisher: Charles River Editors
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Political Figures
Publisher's Summary:
The late 19th and early 20th centuries in America had no shortage of political graft and powerful politicians, but few were as influential or conspicuous as the Kingfish, Huey P. Long. A populist Democrat who hoped to elevate the lower classes in Louisiana, Long accrued massive amounts of power during his governorship, in the process revolutionizing political campaigning. As political scientist V.O. Key noted, Long relied on "patronage in all its forms, deprivation of perquisites, economic pressure, political coercion in one form or another, and now and then outright thuggery....Long commanded the intense loyalties of a substantial proportion of the population... [Supporters] came to believe that here was a man with a genuine concern for their welfare, not one of the gentlemanly do-nothing governors who had ruled the state for many decades."
Long survived an impeachment attempt in the Louisiana legislature on charges of abuse of office and bribery, but that didn't tarnish his popularity. Instead, he moved on to a spot in the US Senate after being elected in 1932, where he made waves with his outspokenness in support of progressive policies. After he broke with the Roosevelt administration at the height of the Great Depression, the president called him "one of the two most dangerous men in America," Roosevelt even pushed for a Senate investigation of Long and his political machine back in Louisiana. A fellow Senator quipped that Long was so unpopular among his peers that he "could not get the Lord's Prayer endorsed in this body."

As Henry kept marrying and discarding wives, she had to be adroit and canny to avoid being snared in the schemes of courtiers plotting to win the crown. And when at last she ascended the throne, her councilors told her she could survive only by marrying.
But she reigned for 44 years as Glorianna, the "Virgin Queen" whose wit, evasions, and towering intellect frustrated enemies both within and outside her island kingdom. The more we know about Elizabeth's endless complexity, the more remains to be learned. Here's a beginning.
