Hello everyone,For this week’s discussion, I’d like to ask a question about career choices. What was the single biggest influence on the career path you chose?Everyone arrives at their career in different ways. Sometimes the decision is carefully planned, and sometimes it happens because of an unexpected opportunity.I’d be interested in hearing your experiences. If you are currently working in a career, what influenced your decision to go into that field? If you are thinking about changing careers, what is the biggest influence shaping the direction you want to go?And for those who operate their own business — either part-time or full-time — what inspired you to start that particular business? Here are a few possible influences that people sometimes mention when choosing a career:• Something they saw in the media (TV, radio, social media, or online videos)• A course they took in school• A teacher or mentor who influenced them• Advice from a friend or family member• A book, article, or podcast they encountered• An unexpected opportunity that came along• A career assessment or career counseling session• Advice from a career expert• An informational interview with someone in a field• Learning about a career through advertising or outreach• A textbook or class project in school• A travel experience that opened new perspectives• A long-time personal interest or dreamEveryone’s story is different, and it’s often interesting to hear how people arrived at the work they do today. If we receive enough responses, I may create a future post summarizing some of the ideas and experiences shared. If you'd like to participate, you can:• Leave a comment on the video titled “This Week: What Influenced Your Career Decision?” on the Live Your Life Learning YouTube channel• Send your thoughts to helpfulfeedback@yahoo.comThanks for taking the time to read and participate in the discussion.MikeLive Your Life Learning
Hello everyone,I wanted to open up a discussion about artificial intelligence (AI) and how it may affect careers, education, and business.AI technology is spreading rapidly across many parts of society. Every week we hear new stories about how AI is being used in workplaces, schools, and businesses. With these developments, many people are wondering how AI may influence the future of work and learning.A question to start the discussion:Do you think AI will create more jobs than it replaces? Some people believe AI will create many new opportunities. Others worry that it may replace certain jobs or change how industries operate. So for this post, I’d love to hear your thoughts and opinions.Below are a few additional questions to help start the discussion. Feel free to answer any of them or simply share your own ideas.Careers• Do you think AI will influence careers? If so, how?• What types of careers do you think will be most affected by AI?• Are there careers that you believe will not be greatly influenced by AI?• What impact do you think AI may have on remote work and remote careers?Education• What influence do you think AI will have on education?• Do you think the impact will mostly be positive, negative, or a mix of both?• Where do you think AI will have the biggest impact:elementary schoolsmiddle schoolshigh schoolscolleges and universities• How might AI influence online or remote learning?Starting or Operating Your Own Business• How do you think AI might influence businesses that people start or operate?• What new types of businesses might emerge because of AI?• Are there businesses that may become more difficult to run in the age of AI?• How might AI influence remote business opportunities?Society in General• What broader changes do you think AI may bring to society? If we get enough responses, I may share a summary of the ideas and perspectives in a future post.If you'd like to participate, you can:• Leave a comment on the video titled “A.I. and the Future of Careers – What Do You Think?” on the Live Your Life Learning YouTube channel• Send your thoughts to helpfulfeedback@yahoo.comThanks for taking the time to read and participate in the discussion.MikeLive Your Life Learning
This Week: AI Resources and Wrist-Friendly Career ToolsHello everyone,I hope you’re all doing well. Sorry for the pause in posting recently — I’ve had a few health issues to manage, but things are improving and I’m getting back into the swing of things. With all the news lately about artificial intelligence and how it’s changing the workplace, I wanted to share a resource that some of you may find helpful.Goodwill, the nonprofit organization that supports many career and workforce programs, is currently offering the Google AI Essentials Course for free for a limited time. If you’re curious about learning the basics of AI and how it can be used in everyday work tasks, this may be worth checking out.More details can be found on the Goodwill website:https://www.goodwill.org/I'm not sure if the course is limited to people in the United States or available internationally, so be sure to check the website for details.Resources for People with Wrist ChallengesFor those who experience wrist pain or repetitive strain issues, I’ve also been working on sharing some ideas and resources that may help. I don’t claim to have all the answers, but I’ve been documenting some things I’ve learned along the way.I’ve created a small YouTube channel where I share information and resources related to wrist injuries and career options. Some additional notes and explanations are included in the video descriptions. You can find the channel here:Wrist Injuries to Career Channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@wristinjuriestocareerchann4456If you have thoughts, suggestions, or ideas, I’d be happy to hear them. So, for this week, I would like to talk about the competition for remote job positions.Focus here on remote jobs in the United States and the general nature of remote jobs; your specific field and a different location in the world may make it easier for you to find a remote job position. When you read content on the Internet or hear a news story, you will learn about organizations that decide to have people end their remote job positions and come back to the office.AP (The Associated Press) article about competition for full-time remote jobs in the United States for 2025In an article from the AP (The Associated Press) called “Facing stiff competition, remote workers up their game” by Cathy Bussewitz, the author talked about how competition for remote job positions is more competitive in 2025.One suggestion the article gives to people seeking remote opportunities is to look for opportunities in the field where you are currently working and are an expert; rather than trying to compete in other fields where you would be new to the field and competing against job applicants who have experience in that field. The link to the article is herehttps://apnews.com/article/finding-remote-jobs-employment-tips-76a61cc6a646493dc3f5e0bfa733160cGoogle searchIf you do a Google search asking the question“Is the competition for full-time remote job positions harder to get in 2025?”The A.I. part of the answer to Google search mentioned that it is indeed more challenging to find full-time remote job positions in 2025.The A.I. mentioned that many people desire the ability to work remotely full-time.The A.I. mentioned that the supply of full–time remote positions was in decline, while the supply of applicants wanting full–time remote employment is going up.The article gave some suggestions for people looking for full-time remote work. For example, see if it is possible to take your current job and do it remotely. You may face competition from hundreds or even thousands of other people applying for the same full-time remote job position. So, what to do then? Here are some ideasWill a hybrid position work for you?You may find less competition for jobs if a hybrid position works for you.A hybrid position where you go to a work location part of the time, and the other part of the time you work from your home.Apply to firms directly in your industry and see if they have remote opportunities.Sometimes you can show an interest in opportunities even if you do not see a job position listed.Informational interviews with people doing the work you want to do remotely.See if you can talk to people doing the type of work you want to do, and who are working remotely. Talk to people who are working full-time remotely in the fields you are interested in.An informational interview is where you talk to a person in a profession you are interested in for a short period, and you ask that person questions about that profession. Be aware that informational interviews are not places to ask for opportunities; informational interviews are for the information. You may learn from others about how they got a remote job position. One place to find contact names for informational interviews is LinkedIn.Career expertsYou may find remote opportunities by asking career experts about how to improve your job search.Get additional trainingYou may find that getting further training in an area may help you find a remote job position.Pause your remote job searchIf you find in your field that the competition for remote jobs is highly competitive, take a “pause” in your search and look at the field of remote employment at a later time to see if the opportunities may be better in the future.During your pause, you may (if you wish) get an additional education in another career field.Remote jobs can have many advantages for the job seeker. You may find options that are not possible in a non-remote job position. Thanks for listening. Thank you.
This week, like to talk about technology change and career change.OpenAI CEO Sam Altman describe career changeI heard the CEO of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, talk about career change.OpenAI CEO Sam Altman mentioned that in 10 years from now; college graduates (or at least some of them anyway) may work in space with a totally new job position and earn a high salary. The quote I found on career change“In 2035, that graduating college student, if they still go to college at all, could very well be leaving on a mission to explore the solar system on a spaceship in some completely new, exciting, super well-paid, super interesting job,” (from Yahoo Tech Fortune article; the link to the specific article is https://tech.yahoo.com/ai/articles/openai-ceo-sam-altman-says-151944949.html)The quote reminds me that careers go through career changes. But I wonder if the career change rate is going faster and faster.Technology change–an explosionIn my understanding, technology change can sometimes resemble an explosion. Not only is technology change occurring in our society–but the rate of technology change is occurring faster and faster. If you compared technology change to a snowball going down a hill, the snowball would become larger and larger as the snowball is going down the hill faster and faster. With technology such as A.I., career changes may occur faster, as some careers disappear and others appear. Some careers may no longer exist in the future, and new careers will develop that we never heard of before. Careers may change at a rapid rate.Career changes may occur at a quick rate. Change will be a consistent element in the coming years related to careers. Now I like to get your thoughtsWhat do you think about technology change and career change? If you like, please leave a comment on the Live Your Life Learning YouTube Channel under a video called “Technology change and career change. (Website: ’https://www.youtube.com/@liveyourlifelearning1553)Thanks for listening. Thank you.
This week, I would like to explore career association websites.Career associations can help people explore a career and find professional opportunities in that career field. Career associations are people in a particular career who gather to learn and support each other.A career association may have a website. I like to focus on career-association websites. Some things a career association website can do are:Give content information about that profession(and one side advantage is that this information is likely to be up to date)Might find information to help you with informational interviews.(An informational interview where you talk to a person in that profession to learn more about that profession)May help you find opportunities in that profession. You may find job positions (for example) advertised on a career association web site–giving the opportunities in that career.May find information on how competitive a career.Example American Marketing AssociationYou can find one example of a profession’s competitiveness on the American Marketing Association career website. If you go to the American Marketing Association career website at www.ama.orgThen click the link “Job Boards” (link towards the top part of the computer screen if you have a laptop computer screen) You have a menu of options that appears; you can then select the choice that says “Marketing Job Board. “ You can then see jobs in the marketing profession. You can have a “Job Board Snapshot” where you can see the number of employers and job seekers. You may find a wide variety of information on a career association website. You may find your next opportunity on a career association website.Thank you for listening. Thank you.
I plan to focus on doing more interview content.I will still do content on work career topics but that will be a secondary focus..I want to focus on interviewing people as my primary content. Thanks for listening. Take care.
