Heisman Trophy frontrunner Cam Ward threw five touchdown passes- two to favorite target Xavier Restrepo- and the Miami defense put up its first shutout of the 2024 season, as the 10th-ranked Miami Hurricanes blew out visiting Ball State 54-0 after a two and a half hour weather delay in Miami. Ward ended up going 19-28 for 346 yards and the five scores with no picks. The senior completed balls to nine different receivers. Jacolby George led Miami's receiving corps with six receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown. Restrepo had three catches for 47 yards and the two scores. Elijah Arroyo, Chris Johnson, Jr, and Elijah Lofton also caught TD passes. Lofton's was from backup Emory Williams, who went 11-12 for 161 yards and a TD in relief of Ward. Miami ran the ball for 270+ yards, but Doak Walker candidate Damien Martinez carried just three times for three yards. Freshman Jordan Lyle scored for the second consecutive game for Miami. Miami's defense dominated Ball St from the start, allowing just 106 total yards and 9 1st downs. Miami quarterback Cam Ward just became the first Hurricane to throw for at least 300 yards and three touchdowns in his first two games in orange and green since at least 1979. In Miami’s 56-9 victory over Florida A&M, Ward completed 77 percent of his passes for 304 yards, 3 touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He also scored a highlight reel rushing touchdown. Ward is currently second in the Heisman Trophy odds behind Quinn Ewers at Texas. Ward’s top weapon, senior receiver Xavier Restrepo, had another 100 yard game with 104 receiving yards and a touchdown. Miami, currently ranked 12th in the country, improved to 2-0 on the year. It wasn’t all smooth sailing against the Rattlers. Host Alex Donno breaks down how Miami was able to respond from a sloppy second quarter with a dominant second half. Miami committed 6 penalties in the first half and only averaged 3.8 yards per carry at the intermission. While Miami kept the Rattlers out of the end zone, the defense did give up a couple of long scoring drives. Miami responded in the second half, outscoring FAMU 31-3. Donno explains how Miami bounced back with cleaner execution and chunk plays. Miami also got several young players into the game. The Hurricanes had an important recruiting section. Five star defensive back DJ Pickett, an LSU commit, attended the game. So did four star Ohio State committed linebacker Tarvos Alford. The Cam Ward show continues in Miami. Ward (20-25, 304 yards) threw three TD passes to three different receivers- Xavier Restrepo, Elijah Arroyo, and Chris Johnson, Jr.- and ran one in himself, leading #12 Miami to an easy 56-9 win over Florida A&M University. The ACC Preseason Player of the Year, Ward's completions went to eight different receivers, with Restrepo catching four balls for 104 yards and the score. No other Miami player had more than three receptions. Wesley Bissainthe's interception on the first drive of the game set up Miami's first score, a 17-yard pass from Ward to Arroyo. Ward then hit Restrepo for a 50-yard TD after Miami's defense held FAMU to a field goal after a long drive. Restrepo has been Ward's #1 target so far this season. Ward's third TD went for nine yards to Johnson, Jr. The Hurricanes scored on every drive except their final drive of the half, when they came up short on 4th and 4 from the FAMU 14-yard line. The Miami running game got going in the second half, with Damien Martinez- the highly-touted Oregon St transfer- scoring from 33 yards out. Martinez finished with 90 yards on ten carries. Backup Mark Fletcher, Jr added added 42 yards on five carries, including a 4-yard touchdown. Both backs are over six feet and 225 pounds. Tyler Baron had three of Miami's five sacks and five tackles- 3 1/2 of them coming for a loss. Miami had double-digit tackles for a loss, but no forced fumbles and only one forced turnover. FAMU QB Daniel Richardson is 13-17 for 135 yards but no scores. Jamari Gasset has five of those catches for 61 yards.
