What an absolute heart-stopper! The #18 BYU Cougars survived a major scare against the Arizona Wildcats, rallying from a double-digit deficit to secure a thrilling 33-27 victory. This gritty performance moves BYU’s season record to a spectacular 6-0 and further solidifies their standing in the AP Top 25 rankings. Locked On BYU host Jake Hatch breaks down this instant classic, analyzing the dramatic swings of momentum and the defining plays that cemented the Cougars' perfect start. This is the BYU football analysis every fan needs to hear. The narrative of this game centered entirely on the BYU comeback. Down early to a relentless Arizona Wildcats team, the Cougars appeared to be on the ropes. We dissect the first-half struggles—the penalties, the missed opportunities, and the defensive gaps—that allowed Arizona to build a cushion. Then, we pivot to the magnificent mid-game adjustments. Head Coach Kalani Sitake clearly galvanized his squad, leading to them rallying form a 10-point deficit with six minutes left in regulation. We highlight the specific coaching decisions and play calls that shifted the entire dynamic of the game, proving that the Cougars possess the championship grit required for a deep run. The Cougar offense, led by Bear Bachmeier, delivered a textbook lesson in clutch performance. We deep dive into the successive scoring drives that systematically chipped away at the deficit. The running game found its rhythm, opening up play-action passes that kept the Arizona defense guessing. Most critically, we analyze the final, game-winning sequence in overtime. Which specific throws demonstrated composure under pressure? How did the offensive line manage to hold up when the game was on the line? These drives showcased the tremendous potential of the Cougar offense and their ability to execute when the stakes are highest, a quality essential for any team vying for a Big 12 Championship. The BYU defense deserves massive credit for shutting the door late. After a shaky start, the unit tightened up significantly in the second half, forcing critical turnovers and generating key pressure on the Arizona quarterback. We review the pivotal defensive adjustments that ultimately sealed the 33-27 win. The resilience of the defense, particularly their ability to make Red Zone stops, was the true difference maker in keeping the scoreboard manageable. This victory is more than just another number in the win column; it's a huge statement to the entire world of college football. By improving to 6-0, the Cougars prove they can win ugly, win with a lead, and win with a heroic comeback. Tune in for detailed player grades, a comprehensive breakdown of the offensive and defensive schemes, and a look ahead at what this massive victory means for the Big 12 standings and Top 25 climb.Join the Locked On Cougars Insider Group by clicking here! The BYU Cougars are rolling! On a thrilling Friday night, the #23 BYU football team defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers 38-24, improving to a sensational 5-0 record on the season—marking the second consecutive year the Cougars have reached this benchmark in the demanding Big 12 conference. Crucially, they now sit at a perfect 2-0 in league play, staking their claim as early contenders. Locked On BYU host Jake Hatch dissects this impressive, yet imperfect, victory and looks at what it means for BYU’s path to a Top 25 finish and beyond. The headline star of the night was undeniably freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier. Bachmeier put on his most polished performance yet, silencing any remaining doubters about his passing prowess. He demonstrated elite arm strength and accuracy, slicing through the WVU defense with precision. We break down the film on his biggest throws and analyze how his development is quickly turning him into one of the most exciting signal-callers in College Football. The Cougar offense looks dynamic and capable of scoring on anyone, especially with Bachmeier distributing the ball efficiently. However, despite the celebratory 5-0 start, this game exposed areas where the team must improve. The defense, while making key plays when it mattered, struggled at times to contain the Mountaineers' ground game, raising concerns about consistency. We dive into the defensive adjustments needed, particularly in stopping power-run schemes and maintaining gap integrity, if Kalani Sitake's squad is going to compete with the top tier of the Big 12.The biggest story to emerge from the victory is the alarming injury status of star linebackers Isaiah Glasker and Jack Kelly. Both players are essential pillars of the BYU defense, and their absence would be catastrophic for the unit’s depth and playmaking ability. We provide the latest updates and speculation regarding their injuries and discuss the immediate impact this could have on the depth chart and defensive scheme heading into next week's matchup. Can the Cougars sustain their 5-0 momentum without these two crucial players? This is a must-listen analysis for every BYU Football fan concerned about the team's health and championship aspirations. We give you the final verdict on the game and what improvements are needed to stay undefeated. The BYU Cougars made a resounding statement in their Big 12 conference opener, outgunning West Virginia 38-24. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier led the charge with a career-best 351 passing yards, igniting discussions about BYU's potential for a conference title run.Bachmeier's Breakout PerformanceBachmeier's aerial assault was the cornerstone of BYU's victory. His precision passing and ability to stretch the field kept the Mountaineers' defense on their heels throughout the game. This performance not only solidified Bachmeier's role as the team's leader but also showcased BYU's offensive firepower in the competitive Big 12 landscape.Offensive DominanceBYU's offense fired on all cylinders, demonstrating a balanced attack that kept West Virginia guessing. The Cougars' ability to mix the run and pass effectively opened up opportunities for big plays and sustained drives. This offensive versatility will be crucial as BYU faces tougher conference opponents in the coming weeks.Defensive Challenges and AdjustmentsWhile the offense shined, BYU's defense faced some hurdles, particularly against mobile quarterbacks. Defensive coordinator Jay Hill's strategies are evolving, with the team showing improvements in containing explosive plays. However, there's still work to be done to fully adapt to the diverse offensive schemes in the Big 12.Injury ConcernsThe victory came with a cost as Jack Kelly suffered an injury during the game. His status will be closely monitored, as Kelly's contributions have been vital to BYU's success this season. The team's depth will be tested if Kelly misses significant time.Looking Ahead: BYU's Big 12 JourneyThis win positions BYU favorably in the Big 12 standings. The Cougars are entering a critical six-game stretch that could define their season. With momentum on their side, BYU has a real opportunity to climb the rankings and establish themselves as legitimate contenders in the conference.Areas for ImprovementDespite the impressive win, the coaching staff identified areas for growth. Consistency in all phases of the game, especially on defense, will be key as BYU faces more established Big 12 programs.Fan Excitement and Program TrajectoryThe victory has energized the BYU fanbase, with many seeing this as a turning point for the program in its new conference home. The atmosphere at LaVell Edwards Stadium was electric, showcasing the passion and support behind BYU football.Conference ImpactThis win sends a clear message to the rest of the Big 12: BYU is not just here to participate, but to compete at the highest level. As the season progresses, the Cougars' performance against West Virginia will be seen as a benchmark for their potential in the conference.BYU's convincing victory over West Virginia has set the stage for an exciting Big 12 campaign. With Bachmeier's arm leading the way and a defense showing signs of improvement, the Cougars are poised to make waves in their new conference home. As they prepare for upcoming challenges, all eyes will be on BYU to see if they can maintain this momentum and truly contend for Big 12 honors.Join the Locked On Cougars Insider Group by clicking here! Last week was an absolute chaotic carnival in Big 12 football, delivering a series of shocking results, major upsets, and significant shifts in the conference hierarchy. If you thought the league was wide open before, Week 4 blew the doors off the competition. Here is a breakdown of how wild the week was: 1. The Preseason Favorite CrumblesThe biggest story of the weekend was the complete dismantling of the presumed Big 12 favorite. Texas Tech Dominates Utah: The No. 17 Texas Tech Red Raiders flew into Salt Lake City and delivered a jarring 34-10 beatdown of No. 16 Utah. The Red Raiders' defense stifled the Utes' offense all game, holding them to just 10 points. The win not only marked Texas Tech as the new team to beat but also immediately put Utah at a massive disadvantage in the conference race at 0-1.  2. A Coaching Firing After a Rock-Bottom LossThe results of the weekend led to a coaching change that sent shockwaves across the country. Oklahoma State Upset by Tulsa: The Cowboys hit a new low, losing at home to in-state Group of Five rival Tulsa, 19-12. This stunning defeat—a loss to a team they were double-digit favorites against—was the final straw. Mike Gundy was fired just days later, ending the longest coaching tenure in the Big 12 and symbolizing just how quickly the landscape of the conference is changing. 4. Kansas’s Offense Continues to ShineWhile not an upset, one team definitively proved they are a legitimate contender. Kansas Rolls West Virginia: The Kansas Jayhawks dominated West Virginia, 41-10, in their conference opener. Quarterback Jalon Daniels and the Jayhawks' high-powered offense looked virtually unstoppable, signaling that Kansas is a serious threat to compete for a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game. In summary, last week was marked by the biggest early-season upset of the Big 12 favorite, the ensuing firing of a legendary coach, and a dramatic, last-second win by one of the league's newest members. The results have essentially reset the league's power structure, proving that in the new 16-team Big 12, absolutely any team can win on any given Saturday.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!5-Hour ENERGYEnough with boring, flavorless caffeine, it’s time to give your caffeine a flavor upgrade with 5-hour ENERGY®️ shots. The BYU Cougars travel to Boulder for a crucial Big 12 matchup against the Colorado Buffaloes. This game pits two programs with contrasting styles and trajectories against each other in what promises to be an exciting contest.NOTE - We found out Sione Moa is out for the game after recording.BYU's Offensive FirepowerBear Bachmeier leads the Cougars' high-powered offense. The junior quarterback has shown impressive accuracy and decision-making this season. His ability to stretch the field vertically opens up opportunities for BYU's potent ground game.LJ Martin spearheads the Cougars' rushing attack. The sophomore running back has been a revelation, consistently gashing defenses with his combination of speed and power. Martin's emergence has given BYU a balanced offensive attack that's difficult to defend.Colorado's Defensive StrugglesThe Buffaloes' defense has been their Achilles' heel this season. They've struggled mightily against the run, ranking near the bottom of the Big 12 in rushing yards allowed. Hey, I don't want to rain on your parade, but you've got no shot of winning the Big12 tournament- you just don't. Yes, beating our Wildcats on our floor puts you in a small group, but maybe you should aim at winning an NCAA tournament game. Here's to actually hoping to see y'all again- I'm the Big12 tournament.
