There is no shortage of talent in Arizona State Sun Devils football's locker room heading into the 2024 season. Cameron Skattebo leads the charge as the key returner from last season after rushing for nearly 800 yards and scoring nine times on the ground. DeCarlos Brooks and Kyson Brown also return as stud players for a terrific rotation with Skattebo. However, Kenny Dillingham was aggressive and brought in three more high-upside players. Through the NCAA Transfer Portal, Raleek Brown, a former five-star recruit, has an upside as big as anyone else on the team and has the pure God-given talent that you just can't teach. Another transfer, Alton McCaskill, has some pretty good upside after finishing as the AAC Rookie of the Year back in 2021. McCaskill has a long way to go after playing just four games over the last two seasons, but the potential is certainly there. And then you have incoming four-star Jason Brown who figures to be a key piece for the future of Arizona State Sun Devils football. With the offseason in full effect for Arizona State Sun Devils football, we begin our position preview series where we overview each position group on the roster and give takes on how it looks, a potential depth chart, and upside/downsides for the unit. We kick things off with the most important position in sports -- quarterback. It's no secret that Arizona State Sun Devils football has struggled to find quality production at the position for several years now. The room for 2024 has several question marks, including a new face of the program in transfer Sam Leavitt. While Leavitt is every bit as talented (in theory) as Jaden Rashada was before his transfer out of Arizona State, there is equally every bit of uncertainty with just four games under his belt. Arizona State Sun Devils football had a busy week that featured a couple of big-name transfers, more commitments for 2025, and an intriguing upcoming visit. At the top of the news cycle was the announcement that veteran quarterback Jeff Sims would transfer to Arizona State University for his final collegiate season. It wasn't met with a great response, as his career has been underwhelming, but there is quite a bit that Sims can bring to the table from a veteran standpoint for the younger guys in the quarterback's room and even more as a dynamic runner. With Sims, the Sun Devils have a player who can beat you with his legs, and for a team that likes to run the football, this is worth its weight in gold. Kenny Dillingham can get very creative with the uses for Sims and we could even see him spending time at other positions given the versatility this offense thrives off of. Beyond Sims, Arizona State Sun Devils football also saw transfer defensive lineman Zac Swanson return home after two years with the Texas Longhorns. Swanson, a Brophy alum, is the latest in the Activate The Valley movement that Dillingham has instilled. The program also landed commitments for 2025 three-star offensive tackles Rob Lapuaho and Maki Stewart. Flipping over to the defensive side of football after looking at standouts from Arizona State Sun Devils football's spring practice sessions, we find ourselves with more than a handful of guys to highlight. Every level of defense had young and green players to savvy veterans who made an impact and were impossible to overlook. Perhaps the biggest of all these guys was senior pass rusher Elijah O'Neil, who has an opening before him to become a full-time starter. O'Neil has showcased significant growth entering his (likely) final season with the Sun Devils and a strong training camp will surely earn him some significant playing time. Some of his partners in crime, including Clayton Smith, C.J. Fite, Jacob Kongaika, and Jeff Clark also stood out along the defensive line. The linebacker room had plenty of playmakers, but redshirt freshman K'Vion Thunderbird caught our eye the most. In the secondary, it was impossible to narrow it down to just two or three standouts, but both  redshirt and non-redshirt freshmen like Keontez Bradley, Montana Warren, Tony Lewis-Nkuba, and Rodney Bimage made their presences felt alongside veterans like Xavion Alford and LT Welch. Now the spring practices have come and gone for Arizona State Sun Devils football, we can begin looking at some of the bigger standouts from the sessions, starting with the offensive side of the football. Sam Leavitt stole the spotlight at the quarterback position and usurped Jaden Rashada of his starting role, which may have heavily impacted his decision to transfer out of the program. At the most important position in football, Leavitt showed confidence and athleticism to be the man in charge. He also has plenty of weapons to use, including former five-star running back Raleek Brown and the redshirt freshman receivers Kaleb Black and Korbin Hendrix, who have shown remarkable growth in their second seasons. Spring practice has closed for Arizona State Sun Devils football following the program's spring game over the weekend. Overall, it was a productive spring for the players, staff, and fans who supported and continued to help Activate The Valley. The atmosphere throughout the month's worth of practices was positive and we saw everyone dialed in. The players worked hard, the coaches showed passion, and the fans certainly noticed. The spring game was the most evident of this, as the valley showed up to support the players in what was a unique spring game that featured more than just a regular scrimmage by including positional drills and even fan interactions.  After the dust settled, we came to some conclusions about the team including the need for another quarterback after Jaden Rashada transferred out of the program, but we saw positional groups like wide receiver, offensive line, and the secondary that showed more than enough depth to keep us excited about the potential. Arizona State Sun Devils basketball head coach Bobby Hurley is cooking with gas right now and it should have the attention of all of college basketball. After three long, grueling years, the NCA has finally passed down its judgment on the Arizona State Sun Devils football program for the recruiting violations Herm Edwards and the Sun Devils staff committed during the COVID-19 dead period. It's been a long time coming and one that fans have been eagerly awaiting to be over and done with. The NCAA has given Edwards a five-year show-cause penalty, as well as six other staffers for their involvement with the violations. Additionally, Arizona State Sun Devils football will lose one scholarship for this recruiting cycle and a four-week suspension from recruiting this summer. The final piece of the puzzle was a four-year probation for the program which just means that they cannot make any more violations or infractions or they will face a more serious punishment. With everything settled, it's time to turn the page, but we are still curious how Kenny Dillingham and the rest of the program, and even the fans will respond to what happens next. It was a hectic weekend for Arizona State Sun Devils football recruiting. Kenny Dillingham and the rest of the staff didn't take any time off. They brought in some of the best recruits we've seen under the Dillingham era from four-star wide receiver Adrian Wilson from Texas to the number four recruit in Arizona, safety Rylon Dillard-Allen. It was a special weekend and it doesn't appear that the program plans to hit the breaks soon. With the NCAA punishments for Arizona State's recruiting, Dilly and the team have been more aggressive than ever before and they're reaping the benefits from it. The program has hit on all three of their pillars between Activate The Valley, Texas to Tempe, and the Polynesian Pipeline, and it's been remarkable to see them stay true to what they promised to hit on. But what Dillingham has done has been special and he's the best recruiter the program has seen in years. It was an eventful day for Arizona State Sun Devils football with the NCAA finally handing down the sanctions for the recruiting violations under Herm Edwards, but more importantly at the wide receiver position where the Sun Devils lost Elijhah Badger to the NCAA Transfer Portal, but also added a four-star recruit for the 2025 recruiting cycle in Adrian Wilson. Badger departs the program within a day of quarterback Jaden Rashada entering his name into the portal and the Sun Devils have a mighty hole to fill with his departure. However, the wide receiver room should be up to the challenge thanks to a core featuring Jordyn Tyson, Troy Omeire, Melquan Stovall, and Jake Smith. The aforementioned Tyson has been advertising himself as a potential superstar during spring practices. But at the end of the day, Kenn Dillingham was able to land a commitment from a top-20 wide receiver in next year's cycle in Adrian Wilson, who credits new wide receivers coach Hines Ward as a big reason for his decision. Arizona State Sun Devils football was dealt a vicious blow when former four-star quarterback recruit Jaden Rashada opted to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. The announcement comes with one week remaining in spring practices after the portal opened earlier in the week. The decision was certainly unexpected, and the Sun Devils are left with more questions than answers... although they may have a successor in the wings. Throughout camp, it has widely been believed that Sam Leavitt has outplayed every other quarterback on the field. Leavitt, also a four-star recruit in the 2023 cycle, transferred to Arizona State after one season at Michigan State. Leavitt was brought in as a means of creating competition for Rashada and veteran Trenton Bourguet to compete with. After Leavitt started to seemingly pull away, Rashada entered the Transfer Portal. All eyes will be on Leavitt for the next few months as Arizona State Sun Devils football looks for him to lead the program. The NCAA Transfer Portal opened up earlier this week and there have already been some big names to enter and begin a search for their new home. Arizona State Sun Devils football has been very aggressive in the portal the last two seasons under Kenny Dillingham, which makes us believe that ASU could once again look to add a player or two. Could adding a veteran quarterback be an option for the program? It makes some sense considering the lack of play time currently on the team. Trenton Bourguet is the team's veteran, but he hasn't had a ton of starting experience as one would expect from a red-shirt senior and it could push the Sun Devils to look for another long-tenured option. The Sun Devils also have youngsters with Jaden Rashada, Sam Leavitt, and Navi Bruzon who could benefit from another veteran in the locker room. There are still a few options in the portal that the Sun Devils could add, including a former conference rival in former UCLA Bruin Collin Schlee. The NCAA Transfer Portal has opened up for the spring session and there have been some massive names to enter including some former five-star recruits and college football darlings. As one should, Arizona State Sun Devils football must monitor the additions and see if any peak their interest. With some recent injuries to the team, it wouldn't be the worst thing to target a few guys to add to the team and perhaps even find some cornerstone players for the program. Naturally, the Sun Devils will be drawn to the biggest name on the market, for five-star recruit and Colorado cornerback Cormani McClain, but there is an equally intriguing player to look at in former Arizona corner Tacario Davis, who could maybe be convinced by former teammate Jacob Kongaika to come play for the good guys. Speaking of Kongaika, the defensive line needs some more depth after losing Anthonie Cooper to a torn ACL. There are several big names to add from USC's Bear Alexander to TCU's Damonic Williams, but a familiar face in Jermayne Lole, most recently with Louisville, would also make fans happy.
