🎙️ Episode: Jack the Ripper in Germany – A Perception From 1888 to Today

In this episode of Talks beyond time and place you will hear my lecture from the East End Conference 2024 in London. I explore how the infamous Jack the Ripper case has been perceived in Germany – from the sensational press coverage of 1888 to today’s cultural interpretations. 👉 In this talk, I discuss: How German newspapers reported on the Whitechapel murders in 1888 Surprising differences compared to English press accounts The enduring fascination with “Jack, der Aufschlitzer” in German literature and popular culture Why looking into non-English sources might reveal unknown details about the case How the German perspective has influenced my own research into the Ripper murders and London’s history This perspective shows how international reporting and cultural memory can shed new light on historical events – and why it’s worth digging into foreign-language sources for fresh insights. 📚 About me: I’m Philipp Röttgers, a German writer, historian and musician. Since typing “Jack the Ripper” into Google at age 16, I’ve been fascinated by the case. Today, I write books, research London’s history and psychogeography, and run the platform London Beyond Time and Place. 🎧 Subscribe to Talks beyond time and place for more episodes on London, history, literature, and hidden stories.

'Carter the Cabman' - Interview with author Toby Virgo

Toby Virgo is the author of 'Carter, the Cabman', which tells the story of a night in the life of a hansom cab driver working in London in the autumn of terror of 1888. Toby is also the founder of The Real Sherlock Holmes Walking Tour of Edinburgh, but now lives in North Yorkshire with his wife and son. About 'Carter the Cabman': 'London, 1888. As yet another freshly-ripped body of another 'fallen' woman is found on the streets of Whitechapel, the East End is a powder keg ready to explode as vigilantes roam and the hot summer nights blur into one. Against a backdrop of wild excitement and fear, hansom cab driver Jeremiah Carter and his faithful grey mare Belle ply their nightly trade, protected only by a copy of the Book of Revelations and three generations of horseman’s nous. No man is above suspicion and Carter looks to the Lord above to guide him through the fog – but for the waifs and strays of the greatest city on Earth, will the clatter of his wheels be the bringer of salvation or can only Death itself deliver them from all evil?' Amelia Dyer and the Baby Farm Murders with Angela Buckley - 16 - Talks beyond time and place

TALKS BEYOND TIME AND PLACE – EPISODE 16: ANGELA BUCKLEY Angela Buckley is the author of the historical true crime series "Victorian Supersleuth Investigates". Her first book was "The Real Sherlock Holmes", but in this episode we will focus on her second book (and the first of the series), which recounts the frantic race to stop one of Britain's most prolific murderers: Amelia Dyer. Amelia Dyer and the Baby Farm Murders On 30 March 1896, a bargeman hooked a parcel from the river Thames at Caversham. Inside the brown paper package was the body of a baby girl – she had been strangled with tape. When two more tiny bodies were found in a carpet bag, the police launched a nationwide hunt for a serial killer. A faint name and address on the sodden wrapping provided the Reading police with their first clue in the frantic race to capture baby farmer Amelia Dyer, one of Britain’s most prolific murderers. Angela and I will talk about this horrifying series of murders and about baby farming in general. Dominik Scherrer - Komponist ("Ripper Street", "Requiem") - Mini Episode (Deutsch/German)
