You ever wonder what a summer would be like if you spent it training dogs at Lone Duck HQ? Well, welcome to the summer of George! Bob, Blaine and Kevin sit down to discuss Blaine's (almost) two months at Bob's house this summer. Dogs were trained, tests and trials were run, pools were floated and fish were caught. Then we talk about some dove hunting and how Blaine manages his dove field, how he works his dogs for doves, some tips and tricks, working dogs in heat, eating birds, marking doves during the chaos of a hunt, etc. and then we talk deer. Blaine has a couple goodies on his property right now and we talked with him about his longbow and his highs and lows of last year and how he is working toward higher highs and less lows. Here's a link to the book they are referring to at the end of the show. Check out our patreon to get 1:1 coaching, talk directly with Bob and join our happy hour hang outs. For today's show, we have the pleasure of hanging out with Scott from Trulock Chokes. We kick off the show hearing about Scott's family business and how they got started in the outdoor industry. You'll quickly find that Scott is the real deal and knows a thing or two about hunting, fishing and especially, choke tubes. We get pretty deep with Scott in regards to how and why his chokes are unique, what he looks for in choke tubes, what he recommends for people to do when they get a new gun, etc. One of the most important things Scott suggests is to pattern the gun, choke and shell of choice at the rough distance you plan to shoot game. It sounds simple but ask yourself... have you done this recently? There's a ton of science that goes into making quality chokes for your guns and Trulock Chokes helps break it down on their youtube channel, which you can check out here. With thousands of variations of chokes, I'd bet there's something for you and your gun. It's worth looking into. Treat yourself. Today we had a great conversation with our friend, Karl Gunzer, from Purina. Before working for Purina, Karl worked with some of the most well-known dog trainers in the country and competed at the national level. Karl shares how he got into the training game, how he worked his way into Field Trials and some of the most memorable dogs he has worked with over the years. After the retriever game, Karl began working for Purina and also got into running cattle dogs. We talk a lot about the crossover between training retrievers and stock dogs and Karl shares a lot of insights. It's always great to chat with people who work dogs and have such an interesting perspective on training animals. Karl and the rest of the folks at Purina are working hard to support our industry, the events and the dogs and for that, I think we owe them some gratitude. This is a special episode because we get to chat with our good buddy, Luke Cour, from Cour's Retrievers. Luke is an absolute workhorse and knows a thing or two about training hunting dogs. Bob and Blaine kick off the show learning about how Luke got into hunting alongside bird dogs as a young guy and then got his first retriever. We also hear how he started working as a trainer (which is a question we get asked all the time... "well, how does someone get into this business?"). Then we get to hear about some of the special dogs Luke has worked with and issues he works through like poison birds and retired birds. We talk a lot about specific drills and how and when to use them (wagon wheels, 5 leg lining drills, etc.). We talk a lot about Hunt Tests and Field Trials and how he moved from one to the other and then onto the SRS. This is when we really dive in deep with the training work. We discuss using birds and plastic bumpers, when to use flyers, getting dogs comfortable with tricky things for the SRS and a lot more. Settle in, this is a good chat with tons of dog training information. If you're interested, check out what Luke is doing and tell him we sent ya. Cheers. Welcome back to another short show. This questions is from a patreon friend, James. Today we had the absolute pleasure of hanging out with our buddy, Rustin Morgan, from Dry Creek Outfitters. If you haven't heard of them, you're missing out. We kick off the show with Blaine introducing Rustin and we hear how Rustin got into hunting and how he started his business with a relentless work ethic. Then we get talking a little about how they've worked together and how Rustin got his first dog (a boykin!). Blaine spent a ton of time choosing a litter and training the right dog to make sure Rustin got the ideal truck buddy and guide dog and let me tell you, Guy is exactly that. We chat with Rustin about Guy's first hunting season and hear the good, the unexpected and his workout routine for the dog that includes a pool and dumbbells.... it'll make sense when you listen. It was great to speak with Rustin and talk business. It's always inspiring to spend time with driven people who share common interests like dogs, bird hunting, entrepreneurship and working hard. If you're interested in having one of the coolest hunts ever, then you should give Rustin a call. Cheers. Today we had the absolute pleasure of chatting with our buddy, Randall Lykens, from Liberty Canine LLC. Randall is an extremely knowledgeable dog trainer who uses a variety of methods to train high performing dogs. Randall is a passionate hunter who spent a lot of his life working for the US Army. We spent a good bit of time discussing his time in the Special Forces and learning how impactful working dogs can be for a team of people. Randall worked as a Dog Handler for a while and shares a few stories that left my jaw on the floor. It's incredible that we have people like Randall on our side and we're pretty lucky to have had him hang out on our show, share a few stories and lessons he learned over the years. Randall mentions a few fantastic trainers who he looks up to and their Instagram handles are below: Trent_k9 Full Send k9 Training k9s of valor Project k9 Hero Southern State k9 Training Iron Oak Dogs Warrior Dog Foundation Justin Rigney Carlos Ramirez (a previous Lone D guest and a show 100% worth checking out) Jay Crafter If you're looking for someone to train your dog who has tons of experience and integrity, then you should consider Liberty Canine LLC. This week's episode is extra special because we have our buddy, Luke Moore, from Gunner joining us and we also have Blaine live and in person. We kick off the show learning about Luke and how he got started chasing birds alongside a dog when he was just a boy. Like many people, Luke had the pleasure of growing up in a home where hunting with a dog was a central part of life. Currently, Luke has an older dog, Goose, who he grew up alongside and trained. Luke and Blaine trade a few hunting stories and talk about when their dogs had lightbulb moments and just "got it." Then we jump into Luke's new dog, Dex, and hear about the training and how he is working him through each stage toward being his family's next hunting buddy. It's pretty easy to get hooked on dogs and man, Luke is pretty hooked. Then we chat with Luke about some of Gunner's latest and greatest inventions and how we have tons to look forward to as they continue to innovate our industry. Thanks to Luke for coming on the show, exchanging stories and having a good time. Check out our patreon to get 1:1 coaching, talk directly with Bob and join our happy hour hang outs. We have a special episode today because we get to chat with our buddy, Marshall, from Treasure Island Outfitters. We met Marshall last year when our patreon crew went down to southern Missouri to shoot ducks and train dogs for three awesome days. Aside from seeing a crazy number of birds, telling stories with friends, working dogs and eating until we just couldn't anymore... we had a really good time hanging with Marshall and his guides. So when it was time to commit to another year of hunting with Treasure Island, we asked Marshall to join our show and hang out for a bit. In this show, you'll hear how Marshall and his business partners got into the hunting business, about their lodge, their hunting techniques, his dogs, etc. I promise, it won't take long to understand why we enjoyed hanging out and hunting with these guys. Want to join us for a 3 duck hunts, dog training seminars, all you can eat, drink and more? Hit us up, we have a few spots left for our hunt with these guys in December 2024. Alright, so we're trying something new here, so please send us some feedback whether you like it or not. We're going to try doing our usual show in a longer format and sprinkle in (ideally weekly) a short episode that's < 10 minutes long answering questions about drills, problems, pro tips, etc. Think of it as a little chit chat between you and Bob. Saddle up and settle in. Check out our patreon to get 1:1 coaching, talk directly with Bob and join our happy hour hang outs. Need some training gear or want to support the Lone D? Today's show is a real treat because we had the pleasure of hanging out with some of the guys from First Lite, Michael Rietveld and Cody Dinsmoor. These two fellas were a ton of fun to have a beer with and talk dogs. First we dig into how these guys got into the outdoor space and how they got into hunting alongside dogs. We trade a few hunting stories about the most recent hunting season and really dig into their training, how their dogs are learning and progressing and what they're working toward. It's pretty cool to see how people get into a hobby and then take it to the next level. If you think you like hunting with your dog, wait to hear how much these guys get after it. Then we dig into a few stories from a recent bear hunt because why not? Overall, this was an awesome episode and I think you'll enjoy it as much as we did. Cheers! If you are living under a rock and don't already, check out First Lite and keep an eye out for some cool stuff coming.... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Today's episode is pretty special and we're happy to share our conversation with Shaundi Campbell from Browning. Shaundi is one of the coolest people you'll ever meet and spends her time chasing all sorts of animals. We kick off the show learning how Shaundi got into the hunting world and her latest expedition to Patagonia where she chased some giant red stags. Then we dig into her time raising and training hounds and how she got her first cat. We often say on the show how the coolest dog trainers are the ones who run hounds because it's such hard, blue collar work and the dogs are tough as nails. Then we move onto other hunting stories, her time in the uplands, Browning, her guns and where she is flying to next to fulfill a lifelong dream. A big thank you to Shaundi for joining our show and trading a few stories. It's always so great to spend time with someone who shares a passion for tough hunts and older guns that have their own stories via bumps and bruises. Be sure to follow Shaundi on social media, she is definitely one of the coolest people to keep an Instagram eye on. Cheers! Do you feel like you could use some direction with your dog training? This is a pretty special episode and you'll very quickly understand why. We are very pleased to speak with Brandon Surratt, a retired police officer who spent 18 years serving his community-- most of that as a K9 Handler. As you could imagine, Brandon learned a thing or two about training dogs and working them in high pressure situations so it was really interesting to hear him share about his dogs (Hyco & Mack), how they train, work, live with his family and (when necessary) get the job done. From wild drug busts to tracking & apprehending some unfriendly people, Brandon has some unbelievable stories that showcases not only his bravery, but his dogs'. Thank you to Brandon, his dogs and all those out there serving the community. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
We get lots of questions each week and one of the top ones is in regards to noisy dogs. My dog is noisy on the line, in the blind, on the dog stand and any other version of this you can imagine. As a result, we hooked up with Randy Bohn (from Rammin' Retrievers) to hear how he fixes this. Randy actually wrote a book called "It's not the dogs fault" and we'd recommend you check it out. We begin the show getting to know Randy and his experience working with dogs and how he got specialized in building good, quiet dogs. We chat through his training progression and his philosophy on increasing obedience to decrease noise. We finish the conversation discussing what it means to rush a dog and hearing Randy's thought on stickiness. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Tonight we have the pleasure of chatting with our good friend, Dr. Joe Spoo, or as most people know him, the Gundogdoc. If you haven't heard our previous shows with him, check those out first. Joe is an absolute wealth of knowledge and is also one of the nicest people you'll ever shake hands with. On this show, we catch up with Joe and hear about his hunting season, then hear about his kit for the field. This is pretty important and you'll hear a little story about Bob's latest venture into being a fake vet surgeon (the dog is ok!), but it's good to have tools on hand if you ever needed it. Since Joe is a vet with years and years of experience, he knows his way around a pair of forceps. He teaches us some "basic" doctoring for the field and shares info about his 16 chapter online course to keep your dog safe while afield. We end the show with some Q&A that came in with all sorts of good talking points like bow legged dogs, what is limbertail, when to be concerned about lumps or masses, flea and tick (and what he prefers!), joint health, diets and CBD. ***If you're interested in what Dr. Spoo has to say and would like to take his course then it's your lucky day.
