Lost In Panama

In 2014, Dutch friends Lisanne Froon and Kris Kremers disappeared while hiking a jungle trail in Panama. Two months later, investigators found their remains, as well as a backpack with a digital camera filled with photos that hinted at a darker story. What happened to Kris and Lisanne? In this investigative series, journalists Mariana Atencio and Jeremy Kryt retrace the last steps of the doomed women. Their search for the truth immerses them in eight years’ worth of conflicting evidence, testimonies, and rumors, as on-the-ground witnesses in Panama come forward for the first time. Welcome To Varnamtown! Available now!

Two years ago, Kyle MacLachlan, the star of Twin Peaks, called investigative journalist Joshua Davis with a strange story. Kyle had heard a rumor that Pablo Escobar did a deal in the early 1980s with a remote, coastal Southern town of 300 people. In exchange for vast wealth and limitless cocaine, Escobar would be allowed to land planes and ships in the area. Over the last 24 months, Josh and Kyle investigated the rumor, journeying to Varnamtown to knock on doors and find out what really happens when a firehose of money and cocaine is turned on a small, tight knit community. Enjoyed listening to this podcast, and it does raise the important issue of murdered and missing women, but it's entirely speculation. Every interview reminds me of Dumb & Dumber, "so you're saying there's a chance!"

So it’s the United States’ fault? Wow. You found a way to blame the U.S. for something. Somebody’s killing woman in Panama, but the take-away here is that U.S. journalists only covered the white women. I’m sure their families feel so comforted by your campaign against racism.
