Description

Hi everyone, welcome to our podcast, Loud Slurp, hosted by two working journalists Ang Li and Vicky Huang. The inspiration for the podcast came to us when we talked about Asian cultures, food and China while slurping noodles in West Village in New York City. A year later, we finally started this podcast as a passion project and a way for two best friends to stay in touch while on lockdown due to Covid-19. Thanks for tuning in and please subscribe for more!

Ever since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been a stark rise in anti-Asian hate incidents. Specifically, the non-profit social organization Stop AAPI Hate has tracked 3795 reports of anti-Asian verbal and physical attacks between March 2020 and February 2021. But anti-Asian racism or racism itself is nothing new. In this episode, we seek to investigate the origins of racially motivated discrimination and how to build allyship and community in the midst of a difficult but critical moment for minorities. In a candid conversation, we speak with Doni Aldine, editor-in-chief at the Culturs Magazine and Kathleen Hou, beauty director at The Cut who penned the beautiful and poignant piece Swallowing Bitterness about what we can do to promote diversity and inclusion (This episode was recorded on March 20). We got real personal in this episode by inviting Mary Kekatos, our best friend from journalism school (and ever since), to talk about how our unlikely friendship was made during a year of intense journalism training, competition, and camaraderie. From semi-misunderstood first impressions to the joy of first getting to know each other, to lining up to get countless food cart lunches together, to cheering and lifting each other up during moments of difficulties and hardship, we reminisced about those salad days with laughter and tears. A testament to the bond we built in J-school, the three of us kept in touch when we lived on three different continents right after graduation, and four years later, we still have each other for the ups and downs in life. We capped the episode off with a "secret recipe" for how we keep each other close during all these years and a vision for our friendship in the decades to come. Please join us on this journey, take a listen and share with us your friendship stories! If you like this episode, please subscribe to the Loud Slurp podcast on Apple Podcasts and rate us. This episode focuses on a topic that hits close to home with us: what it's like to live thousands of miles away from your family during the global coronavirus pandemic. We talk about our concerns for our families back in China months before the virus hit the United States, and how that took a turn when the outbreak became severe across the Pacific ocean. We also reflect on how the pandemic has changed us and share some self-care tips we rely on to stay sane during these days. But don't worry, it's not all doom and gloom here, starting episode two, we are introducing a new segment where we ask each other the best dish we've eaten or cooked over the past week, hit "play" to find out our best dishes of the week!
In this episode, we talk about one of the hottest Korean dramas right now - Itaewon Class, which both of us binged in a matter of few days. We explore the various elements, including delicious Korean food, that make the show so addictive.
