I had the most fun with today’s episode because it is actually one of my friends and it is always magical when you get to sit and have a chat with your friend and then let everyone else listen in on it. Noell Jett is my amazing guest today. I connected with her on TikTok through the pandemic.  Noell exploded on TikTok because she has the best everything including recipes, strategies for keeping your house clean, and more. She is so good at balancing it all. She has been online as a creator sharing her journey for years.  Today we are sitting down to explore Noell’s story which is really unexpected if you’ve encountered her on social media. We also get to talk about her new book, Create Your Dream Home on a Budget. She gives practical advice for how to do that, inspiration, and also shares some projects. This is a journey she went on herself so now she can share with other people just how possible it is.  You can download this episode from Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, and Spotify – or listen to it below! listen now in this episode [04:01] Noell’s story     [09:43] Building and planning their first dream house [23:49] Her design process  [27:04] Having a beautiful kid-friendly home   [28:40] Maintaining your space [29:21] Evolving spaces as kids grow links Make Space Podcast Website Cara on Instagram Cara on Twitter Color Curator Workshop DIY Coaching Session Design Consultation connect with noell Noell’s Website Noell on Instagram Noell on Facebook Noell on LinkedIn Noell on YouTube Noell on TikTok connect with cara: Cara on Instagram Cara on Twitter [04:01] Noell’s story    Noell was raised in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains in southwestern Missouri in extreme poverty. There were some religious constraints and just a very poor part of the country. There were five kids total, so seven people in this tiny little house. They hunted and we had a garden, but didn't just go to the grocery store ever. So just a different kind of poverty that a lot of people don't even realize still exists. In her 20s, Noell ended up pregnant, married, and had two beautiful daughters. Then ended up divorced and a single mom to two little girls. Then she met Daniel and that was a very pivotal moment in turning my life around, beginning to figure out life, and really just stabilizing myself and heading on the path that has led to here. [09:43] Building and planning their first dream house  When Noell met Daniel, he told her that since he was at least in high school, he had dreamed of building his own house someday. She loved that so they made it their goal and something that they worked toward as a couple. So for the next seven years, they worked on setting that plan into motion.  It was very hard to plan and it took a lot of time, energy, and effort. This is why they have written the book to help other people navigate that process and maybe learn from some of the things that we learned, and some shortcuts based on all the things that they had to go through. Just kind of give them a little leg up in the process. [23:49] Her design process  For Noell, it mainly starts with function. I look at what she wants her process to look like and how she wants her home to flow. Then she also leans into her roots. As she grew up in the backwoods it's still part of her heart and soul and she loves old-fashioned things. She used to go with my grandmother as a little girl so that's always been part of me and that always bleeds over into my designs. [27:04] Having a beautiful kid-friendly home   First and foremost, it is work and it is not easy. Noell has amazing systems in place. Everything has a home and a place where it’s supposed to be. The more organization you can have in a home, the better. Every single item needs to have a home.

I went to school for something completely different. I had a business degree with a focus in marketing and I found it difficult to find a job in that field when I graduated from college. I finally was able to find a job as an administrative assistant for an interior designer. That was the place where my eyes were opened to design in a way that I had never seen or had any concept of before. I was fascinated with what they were doing so they took me under their wing a bit. One thing led to another and soon I was given an opportunity to help someone else and that turned into something else which turned into something else which turned into a business.  [11:37] Writing her book, Establishing Home  It was quite the experience writing the book and the first time I had written a book. I was so happy for the opportunity that was given to me. I've spent quite a bit of time mentoring young women in various aspects of life and I have enjoyed it so much. I received so many inquiries and direct messages from people of all ages, who have questions about all kinds of things. I felt like, by telling my story, I could answer a lot of those questions.  [14:28] Creating spaces that work Good design has to be both functional and beautiful. I spend quite a bit of time learning what people's needs are, what their family structure is, how they host guests, and how they view cleaning and maintenance. Those really influence a lot. I get to learn about the people, their families, and the things that are really important to them. We get a better feel for things as things go along. The beauty of having a different house and different clients mean that you come up with all kinds of different ideas and so each project is unique.  [23:48] Tips for evolving a home through different seasons   When I was younger, budget was a big deal for me. I didn't have a lot of extra money to go out and buy whatever piece of furniture I wanted. So I often found used pieces,

Today’s episode is going to be windy, so buckle up! I am sitting down with my friend Kyla Herbes from House of Hipsters. Kyla is an incredible designer. She is the queen of evolving and reinventing spaces, rearranging them, and changing things over time. She is also really amazing at thrifting and finding super unique pieces and she has been featured on Apartment Therapy, HuffPost Refinery 29, Style Me Pretty Living, Weekly Magazine, and more.  Today Kyla and I are sitting down to talk about tips and tricks for styling your space. We also talk about social media inspiration and how the landscape has evolved with both the pandemic and TikTok coming into the picture.  It is a little peek behind the curtain into how home influencers create content and all the changes that have happened through short-form video becoming the new way we get our inspo versus photos. It has changed the game and we dive into what is going on, the push for authenticity, and how we have adapted and changed.  It is a really interesting episode if you are curious about where home inspiration comes from on social media if you want a peek behind the curtain at what influencers do, or if you are a new or seasoned influencer that wants to hear how we are thinking of things. We go on a lot of tangents and it is a lot of fun.   You can download this episode from Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, and Spotify – or listen to it below! listen now .icon-3-1 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-1 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-2 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-2 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-3 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-3 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-4 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-4 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-5 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-5 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-6 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-6 .
We are changing it up today and I am doing a solo episode because I really wanted to dive into what it means to “make space” in your home. When I named this podcast there was a double-sided meaning here. On one hand “making space” means making your spaces, taking charge of DIY and projects, and really just stepping up and taking charge of the process of designing a home that you are obsessed with and everything that comes but it also is about making it all apply to you and what you want out of your space. I thought this was the perfect time to take an episode to really unpack what it means to “make space” in your home because I think as we begin the year there are a lot of additions you feel you need to add to your life. On the show today, I am sitting down with my friend Zandra Zuraw who is the host of the Style Matters podcast. We are going to talk all about uncovering your design style. Zandra has a really fun approach to this.  She helps people through her podcast, retreats, and courses.   Her approach is all about slow style. Slow style is building your style over time. I really love this approach because it takes the pressure off that you have to have your space finished right now.  It lets you experience, do things over time, and slowly uncover your style along the way.  You can download this episode from Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, and Spotify – or listen to it below! listen now .icon-3-1 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-1 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-2 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-2 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-3 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-3 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-4 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-4 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-5 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-5 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-6 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-6 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-7 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-7 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-8 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0p...
On the show today, I have a very special guest. It is someone that has inspired me immensely on my own DIY journey and I am beyond honored to be able to have this conversation with her so that she can hopefully inspire you as well. Today I am sitting down with Amy Howard who is a powerhouse when it comes to furniture restoration and furniture flipping. Amy has a background in art history and teaches furniture restoration.  This conversation is really special because flipping furniture is how I initially got started with DIY.   Amy has the next-level version of this which is full-on restoration, really refined, finishes, and techniques that have been around for so many years. She just has a beautiful perspective and that really good artful eye for how to take pieces and make them into something magical.  She does this through her product line, courses, and just showing up as an inspirational teacher day-to-day on social media across her platforms.  I am excited to be able to deep dive with her into a little bit about furniture flipping and just get her perspective on designing spaces you love through creating pieces of furniture that you are obsessed with.  You can download this episode from Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, and Spotify – or listen to it below! listen now .icon-3-1 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-1 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-2 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-2 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-3 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-3 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-4 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-4 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-5 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-5 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-6 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-6 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000}
On the show today, I have a design icon. I am sitting down with Norma Kamali who is most well known as a fashion designer but is so much more.  You might know her from her designing pieces such as the Sleeping Bag Coat worn by Lady Gaga and Rihanna or the iconic red swimsuit worn by Farrah Fawcett. Not only can we learn so much from such an iconic designer when it comes to how to design our spaces, but there are also some really cool specifics we get to dive into like her book, I Am Invincible.  Her book is a life handbook for how to navigate each decade of your life with purpose and power.   We talk so much on this show about how life is in phases and our homes reflect that. With each season of our life, our home is going to look very different based on what we need. With all her vast experience, Norma has such a beautiful and unique perspective for how to design your life well, how your home reflects that and how to move through each phase of your life. This is such a beautiful conversation about what empowerment and our spaces can look like through each phase of our lives.  I think this conversation is going to be above and beyond what we normally get on the show in terms of life advice as well as some home design strategies mixed in.  You can download this episode from Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, and Spotify – or listen to it below! listen now .icon-3-1 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-1 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-2 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-2 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-3 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-3 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-4 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-4 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-5 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-5 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000} .icon-3-6 img{height:50px;width:50px;opacity:1;-moz-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;-webkit-box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;box-shadow:0px 0px 0px 0 ;padding:px;}.icon-3-6 .aps-icon-tooltip:before{border-color:#000}

We have a really fun conversation that covers all kinds of things from experimenting with DIY, uncovering your style, and even a little about her time on NBC’s Making It. She is literally an amazing designer and creator. You might have seen her places like the cover of HGTV Magazine or in a JoAnn’s commercial she shot with Phyllis from The Office and all other kinds of places.  I am so excited for this conversation! I think it is going to be so helpful to energize you. Rebecca has such amazing expertise in this space from being an interior designer to owning a shop to doing DIY projects and inspiring people every day through what she creates. I have Katharine MacPhail who is an architect and also the host of the Talking Home Renovations podcast with me.  Renovating spaces can be really intimidating.
