In August 2016, 24-year-old Ashley Byers and 54-year-old Doug Benefield got married just 13 days after meeting. To a hopeless romantic, a whirlwind romance can seem like a dream. From a more practical standpoint, marrying someone you barely know can be perceived as impulsive and reckless. People close to the couple wondered - how well can you know someone in such a short span of time? In this case, it’s not clear whether Doug and Ashley’s rushed nuptials had anything to do with the relationship’s tragic end. And to this day, there remains much debate over the reasons why one of them would end up dead.  Follow Jami on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir and join the Serial Streamers true crime TV club! On October 21, 2021 a small crew took their places on the set of a low-budget movie titled “Rust,” starring veteran actor Alec Baldwin. When it came time for the scene to be played out, Baldwin pulled out a revolver and a shot rang out. Confusion reigned as the frightened group looked in all directions. Then their eyes fixed on a single point …42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins gripping her chest. She took three small steps backwards then slumped to the floor. She’d been shot. A frantic call to 911 sent first responders cascading onto the rural movie set outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. A helicopter rushed Halyna to University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. By the time she arrived, there was little for doctors to do. Within minutes, Halyna Hutchins was pronounced dead.  The questions were starkly obvious. Why was there live ammunition on a movie set? How did it get there? And how had a revolver loaded with a lethal round been placed in the hands of one of Hollywood’s biggest stars? Just seven days after a quadruple homicide in Wichita, Kansas, a second would take place. This crime, known as The Wichita Massacre, would become one of the most famous crimes in the history of Kansas, along with those committed by infamous serial killer, Dennis Rader (known as BTK). Between December 7 and December 14, 2000, two brothers, Reginald and Jonathan Carr, went on a robbery, rape and murder spree in Wichita. The Carr brothers inflicted great pain and suffering upon their victims, and their victims’ families. However, from this terrible tragedy, arose a story of tremendous triumph, and, of all things …love. In this episode of Serial Streamers, Jami recaps the Netflix docuseries: “The Menendez Brothers.” This 2024 documentary highlights the widely publicized case involving Lyle and Erik Menendez, two brothers who killed their wealthy parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in 1989. This brutal case had a grip on the entire nation because it had all the makings of a Hollywood movie …a rich family from Beverly Hills that seemed perfect from the outside looking in. What most people didn’t know at the time was that inside of their Beverly Hills mansion was a house of horrors, according to graphic and disturbing testimony at the Menendez brothers’ first trial. In this episode, Jami recalls her memories and perception of this case from her youth and how her opinions have shifted over the years. She also recaps the documentary and breaks down new developments in this 30+ year old murder case. Sponsors: Visit ForHers.com/MURDERISH for your personalized weight loss treatment options. At 5:24 am on Sunday, May 22, 2016, a 9-9-9 operator responded to a call from someone reporting a person who wasn’t breathing. The caller told the 9-9-9 operator that her daughter’s partner had collapsed. When emergency medical personnel reached the home, they found Lyndsey Vaux unresponsive and not breathing. Lyndsey Vaux died not long after the 9-9-9 call. Investigators could have never been prepared for the information they would learn about the events leading up to Lyndsey’s death. Lyndsey’s story involves domestic violence and coercive control in their most extreme forms. Listener discretion is strongly advised. In the Winter of 1995, the former leader of hip hop’s most notorious group, N.W.A., lay bed-ridden, pale, and connected to all manner of life-saving devices and fighting for every breath. At the time, Eazy was on top of his game when, seemingly out of nowhere, the iconic rapper developed a cough. At first, Eazy was diagnosed with bronchitis-related asthma and sent home three days after seeking medical care. The prescribed drugs didn’t help. On February 24th, he was admitted to Cedars-Sinai to undergo extensive testing. The lab results shocked everyone, from fans to foes. Eric Wright was dying of AIDS. Within a month, the music mogul and rap pioneer would be dead. Only, the story doesn’t end there. As we approach 30 years since the death of Eazy-E, questions remain. How did he contract AIDS? Why did he perish so quickly from a condition known to result in a slow demise? Could foul play have been involved? And what’s the story behind his death-bed wedding to girlfriend Tomica Woods, and his much debated last will and testament? She and her boyfriend waited until they thought it was safe, and then exited the restaurant. What happened next would forever change the lives of several teenagers and their families. Tragically, Valaree lost her life. Dirty Money Moves: Women in White Collar Crime is BACK! In Season 3, we’re deep diving into the case involving Tracii Hutsona, a self-described “winner” who appeared to have it all: successful businesses, multimillion dollar mansions, luxury cars, and plenty of cash to spend on high end jewelry and vacations. She’s an intriguing woman who’s had a lengthy acting and modeling career, one that saw her on the cover of several major magazines, including Italian Vogue. She also had alleged romantic ties to Keanu Reeves. But the facts of Tracii’s life that make her so intriguing, are also the facts we’re checking and not much about Tracii seems to be real, except maybe her abilities as a con artist. Most recently, she made headlines for embezzling more than $1 million from Joumana Kidd, actress and ex wife of NBA star Jason Kidd, via Tracii’s luxury concierge business. Tracii opened a restaurant in San Diego, fittingly called “Breakfast Bitch,” which was funded, in part, by Joumana’s money. These recent crimes may have grabbed all the media attention, but they are by no means Tracii’s first run-ins with the law. She’s had a long history of schemes, going back 30 years. Yet, the most shocking thing about Tracii isn't the dollar amount she’s managed to steal over the years, but the way in which she victimizes the people closest to her, over and over again. This is the story of an extremely charismatic woman who can manipulate even the most savvy person into believing exactly what she needs them to, all in the pursuit of a lifestyle of luxury, glamor, and self-indulgence. By the end of this season, you might be surprised as to how all of this chaos plays out. In this episode of Murderish, I interview John Meehan’s (AKA Dirty John) first wife, Tonia Bales. When Patricia Esparza was arrested in October 2012, nobody could believe it ...not even Patricia. She had spent the last decade living abroad, working as a respected psychology professor. There was no way she could have anticipated that returning to the U.S. would bring to the forefront a dark event from her distant past. As more details came to light, the complex nature of this case would explain why it remained unsolved for nearly two decades. The high-profile trial of Massachusetts finance professor Karen Read ended without resolution last month. In the year’s most closely watched legal proceedings, the jury, composed of six men and six women, failed to agree on whether Read was guilty of murdering her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, or on the two other charges against her. O’Keefe, 46, was found battered, freezing and unconscious outside a Canton, Massachusetts home on the morning of January 29th, 2022, and later pronounced dead at the hospital. At trial, the commonwealth argued Karen, drunk and upset, struck John with her SUV and abandoned him in a snowstorm. Karen’s defense maintained her innocence, alleging that John was killed by fellow law enforcement officers during a house party and that Karen Read was framed by those officers. The live-streamed trial was a rollercoaster with all the drama of a Hollywood script: a police cover-up, misconduct, misogynistic and highly unprofessional text messages from the lead detective, a potential love triangle, lies, and betrayal. On February 12, 1971 19-year-old Jesse McBane headed out to surprise his fiance, 20-year-old Patricia Mann. He was taking her to a Valentine’s Dance in Durham, North Carolina. The two lovebirds had to be back at Patricia's dormitory by 1:00 AM curfew. Only …she never returned. Durham police officers found Jesse’s Ford Cortina the next evening parked in a cul-de-sac. 12 days later, a land surveyor came upon what he thought was a mannequin’s leg sticking out from a pile of leaves. When he poked the extremity with a stick …he saw skin move. It was the missing students. Details from the crime scene suggested the couple had been tortured and murdered by hanging. Word of the heinous crime shocked the Tarheel State. The next day’s page 1 headline in the Durham Sun read: ‘Strangulation by Rope Killed Couple.” Over 50 years later, the double homicide remains North Carolina’s most notorious unsolved murder. Tough, the case isn’t without suspects.  Follow Jami on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir and join the Serial Streamers true crime TV club! Don't know how I feel about dude. He's very Robert Stackish. His voice makes it sound creepier for some reason.

yea can't do that voice. zero inflection or emotion. sounds like a computer reading, with very little observation of punctuation. hard to tell sometimes where one sentence ends and the next begins.

Would the mother of a 2year old child have a one-night-stand when her child was a) sleeping next door and b) still being breastfed and might wake up several times per night, if only to be given the breast for comfort, for example ? I seriously doubt that.

Very boring podcast. Tried listening but could never get into her storytelling. Very basic true crime podcast not going to learn anything new or enlightening about these cases unfortunately.

I am interested in the stories, however...a word of advice- take a class on how to tell stories. This is literally the most boring, dry and stale story telling I have ever heard. How on earth has none of her friends told her how this sounds?? I'm rooting for this show, just, you know- get into it.

Jamie, thank you for telling this story. The city is pronounced "mo•BEEL," but your giving voice to finding justice for Michael makes that forgivable.
