In May 1996, 24-year-old Julianne Williams and 26-year-old Laura Winans set off on a weeklong camping trip in Shenandoah National Park. The two experienced hikers were eager to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Virginia wilderness. The adventure was a celebration of sorts. Julie and Lollie, as they were known to friends, had recently moved in together in Vermont, a major step in their relationship. The young women had not yet come out to their families back home in the Midwest, and were still adjusting to life as an openly gay couple. On May 31, 1996, Julie’s father reported the couple missing as they’d been due home three days earlier. The two women’s bodies were discovered the next day. They’d been brutally assaulted and murdered. A widespread investigation to find their killer ensued, but would ultimately lead to the wrong man. Julie and Lollie’s families would have to wait decades for answers, and the close of their case would be deeply disappointing for some. In this episode of Serial Streamers Jami recaps the Peacock docuseries: “Girls Gone Wild: The Untold Story.” This 3-part documentary takes viewers behind the scenes of the wildly popular, and controversial, TV show “Girls Gone Wild” which first aired in the 1990s. Although the show was sexually explicit, many people had no idea what was really going on behind the scenes. According to some of the girls filmed, many of them were heavily intoxicated, underage and allegedly given illicit substances. Some of the women also claim they were coerced into doing porn on film. Company founder, Joe Frances, has been accused numerous times by different women of physical and sexual assault. Frances has been living in Mexico, in exile, for years following his conviction on assault charges. Jami doesn’t hold back on her opinions in this fiery recap of a docuseries that will have you RAGING by the end. Sponsor: Acorns: Visit acorns.com/murderish or download the Acorns app to get started. There was nothing particularly unusual about the morning of February 16, 1997. Sarah Jackson didn’t usually work Sundays at Captain D’s seafood restaurant. The 16-year-old was a devoted churchgoer. On this day, however, Sarah had agreed to help her manager Steve Hampton open. When Sarah agreed to work that Sunday, she couldn’t have possibly known it would be her last shift ever. A gun toting man disrupted Sarah’s shift, shattering many lives in an instant. The violence unleashed on Nashville by The Fast Food Killer didn’t stop there. Before long, investigators would discover the assailant’s story didn’t start there either. By the end of the brutal crime wave, seven people would be dead, and several more potentially linked to the same killer. Before becoming America’s weed-smoking darling and Martha Stewart’s bestie, Calvin Broadus Jr., known to the world as Snoop Dogg, was a member of the Crips, a notorious LA-based street gang. Prior to his fateful encounter with super-producer Dr. Dre at age 19, Snoop Dogg faced a bleak future, teetering on the brink of prison or death. Born on the tough streets of Long Beach, California, his earliest years were marked by struggle and strife. It's hard to imagine now, but Snoop Dogg’s career, one that has cemented his status as a global icon, nearly met a premature end. In September 1993, with his highly anticipated debut album, Doggystyle, poised for release, Snoop was arrested in Los Angeles and accused of being an accessory to murder. If convicted, he faced life in prison. On August 25th, Snoop was behind the wheel of a vehicle involved in a deadly shooting that left 20-year-old Ethiopian immigrant, Philip Woldemariam, dead. The question hanging over Snoop and his entourage was stark: was the shooting self-defense, or cold-blooded murder? The answer would rest with a jury, which held the future of a rap superstar in its hands. Follow Jami on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir where she comments on true crime cases and reality TV! February 23, 2020, was just another day in the lives of Jorge Torres and Sarah Boone—a day filled with aimless hours, empty routines, and drinking. Only this day, a seemingly harmless game of hide-and-seek would turn deadly. The murder weapon: a suitcase. Jorge Torres took his last breath stuck inside of a suitcase as Sarah Boone slept upstairs. Video footage captured by Sarah that fateful evening shocked the nation and became key evidence during her trial. A jury would have to decide whether Jorge’s death was murder, self-defense, or simply a tragic error. Follow Jami on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir and join the Serial Streamers true crime TV club! While Jami takes time off from recording MURDERISH during the Holidays, we’re releasing an episode of her other podcast, Lipstick & Lies. In this episode of Lipstick & Lies, Jami walks co-host Melissa Moore through the case of Texas stage mom, Wanda Holloway. In 1989, Wanda went to great lengths to secure her daughter’s spot on the coveted junior high cheerleading team. When her daughter, Shanna Harper, DIDN’T make the cheer squad, Wanda was seething with anger. The socialite stage mom then took steps to make sure Shanna would be on the cheer team the following year. The steps she took, however, would turn many peoples’ lives upside down and end in a courtroom shocker. This is the bizarre tale of an overzealous Texas socialite and cheer mom who’d carefully planned out her life and image, and nobody was going to get in the way of that …even if it meant murder. On May 27th, 1991, a call came in to the front desk of the Palm Springs Ramada Inn. The caller was 33-year-old Susan Schnell, a guest at the hotel. Shockingly, Schnell said that she had been sexually assaulted and her throat had been slit. The battered woman was in critical condition but fortunately, she survived. Police quickly arrested her attacker. When investigators questioned the man about the attack on Schnell, they got much more than they bargained for. He admitted not only to the abduction and assault of Susan Schnell, but also told police where they could find the body of a young woman in Seattle whom he had murdered the previous Friday. After being alerted of this grisly confession, King County Police soon found the body of a young woman inside the trunk of her own car. The body was identified as being 21-year-old Holly Washa. In August 2016, 24-year-old Ashley Byers and 54-year-old Doug Benefield got married just 13 days after meeting. To a hopeless romantic, a whirlwind romance can seem like a dream. From a more practical standpoint, marrying someone you barely know can be perceived as impulsive and reckless. People close to the couple wondered - how well can you know someone in such a short span of time? In this case, it’s not clear whether Doug and Ashley’s rushed nuptials had anything to do with the relationship’s tragic end. On October 21, 2021 a small crew took their places on the set of a low-budget movie titled “Rust,” starring veteran actor Alec Baldwin. When it came time for the scene to be played out, Baldwin pulled out a revolver and a shot rang out. Confusion reigned as the frightened group looked in all directions. Then their eyes fixed on a single point …42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins gripping her chest. She took three small steps backwards then slumped to the floor. She’d been shot. A frantic call to 911 sent first responders cascading onto the rural movie set outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. A helicopter rushed Halyna to University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. By the time she arrived, there was little for doctors to do. Within minutes, Halyna Hutchins was pronounced dead. The questions were starkly obvious. Why was there live ammunition on a movie set? How did it get there? And how had a revolver loaded with a lethal round been placed in the hands of one of Hollywood’s biggest stars? Just seven days after a quadruple homicide in Wichita, Kansas, a second would take place. This crime, known as The Wichita Massacre, would become one of the most famous crimes in the history of Kansas, along with those committed by infamous serial killer, Dennis Rader (known as BTK). Between December 7 and December 14, 2000, two brothers, Reginald and Jonathan Carr, went on a robbery, rape and murder spree in Wichita. The Carr brothers inflicted great pain and suffering upon their victims, and their victims’ families. However, from this terrible tragedy, arose a story of tremendous triumph, and, of all things …love.
