So that’s…horrifying."While it has been long known that American telecommunications companies worked closely with the spy agency, newly disclosed NSA documents show that the relationship with AT&T has been considered unique and especially productive. One document described it as 'highly collaborative,' while another lauded the company’s 'extreme willingness to help.’""AT&T has given the NSA access, through several methods covered under different legal rules, to billions of emails as they have flowed across its domestic networks. It provided technical assistance in carrying out a secret court order permitting the wiretapping of all Internet communications at the United Nations headquarters, a customer of AT&T.""One document reminds NSA officials to be polite when visiting AT&T facilities, noting: 'This is a partnership, not a contractual relationship.’"The documents don’t mention AT&T specifically, but the evidence in the documents implicate AT&T and former NSA members have confirmed itA Fairview fiber-optic cable, damaged in the 2011 earthquake in Japan, was repaired on the same date as a Japanese-American cable operated by AT&T.Fairview documents use technical jargon specific to AT&T.And in 2012, the Fairview program carried out the court order for surveillance on the Internet line, which AT&T provides, serving the United Nations headquarters. (NSA spying on United Nations diplomats has previously been reported, but not the court order or AT&T’s involvement. In October 2013, the United States told the United Nations that it would not monitor its communications.)AT&T’s “corporate relationships provide unique accesses to other telecoms and I.S.P.s,” or Internet service providers, one 2013 NSA document states.AT&T’s reaction:“We do not voluntarily provide information to any investigating authorities other than if a person’s life is in danger and time is of the essence,” Brad Burns, an AT&T spokesman, said. The standard is “simply a restatement” of a traffic nondiscrimination standard found in common carrier regulations that now cover broadband service, said Matt Wood, policy director at digital rights group Free Press."This is a tough one but I think I land on the side of those opposed to the future conduct standards. The problem with this kind of regulation isn’t the group of people who put the regulation in place, it’s the ones that come after that don’t necessarily share an ideology with the first group.I think these rules would have been better served by a narrower definition of net neutrality as a temporary measure until Congress can get an internet bill passed that would encourage competition among ISPs. This week on Machine Compatible: Cool baseball face guards, Snowden and Clinton, Google Plus has a new boss again and a bunch of NBA stories. iTunes Subscription RSS Subscription Episode 00034 Machine Compatible episode recorded Thursday, March 5, twenty fifteen What we’re covering Cool baseball face guards, Snowden and Clinton, Google Plus has a new boss again and a bunch of NBA stories Quick story or funny thought A very happy birthday to Momofuku Ando Momofuku Ando, ORS, was a Taiwanese-Japanese businessman who founded Nissin Food Products Co., Ltd. He is known as one of the inventors of instant noodles and Cup Noodles He would have been 105 today, he passed away in 2007 Few people had as much influence over my high school lunches and college students everywhere are forever grateful to Mr. Ando What did you do? (Games, books, movies, etc.) Andrew Watched a “Let’s Play” video for At The Gates If you’re into 4x games you should check this out, atthegatesgame.com It’s a variation on the Civilization style game and it’s being designed by the designer of Civ 5 It has a unique take on resources and how the civilizations themselves work I’m looking forward to it Played Civilization 4 after watching that video cause it got me itching for some turn-based strategy Listened to a lot of Spotify, Beck’s new album is good Started listening to the DLC podcast by Jeff Canata on the 5by5 network, it’s about video games. I’m enjoying that. Webb Still reading Darth Bane: Path of Destruction Reading Novel Writer’s Toolkit by Bob Mayer for the conference I’m attending this weekend Watched some sports, actually listened to some spring training baseball online (what a nerd) Not really playing any games lately but saw a Civil War strategy game in the App store that is calling my name (Battle of Gettysburg) Plug (Show Plug) Two Big Stories (we each pick our biggest story of the week and talk about it) Andrew - HBO Now may be launching in April This will be separate from HBO GO This will be a new service separate from cable subscriptions and available through apps on Apple TV, Roku, Xbox, Amazon TV, etc. We don’t have an exact list of partners yet The service should cost around 15 dollars and is expected to be available in April Apple is holding an event on Monday, March 9th, most speculation has been that it will be related to Watch, but they could add in a few other smaller announcements like this one Jonathan - Is Netflix changing it’s mind about net neutrality? Netflix insists it hasn’t changed its net neutrality stance However, Netflix CFO says in the above article, “Were we pleased it pushed to Title II? Probably not. We were hoping there would be a non-regulated solution." Sounds to me like he’s simply saying they wanted something to happen just would have liked it to come about differently. How do you see it? One thing that is making folks raise their eyebrows a little bit is these comments came a day after Netflix struck a deal in Australia to allow subscribers to watch its videos without it applying to their monthly data caps. This ran afoul of some net neutrality advocates. What’s .500 good for in the East? This section is dumb now. It’s Seventh and I don’t want to play anymore. We’ll find something new to play soon. The News How about some Baseball? Giancarlo Stanton’s Face Mask Looks Sweet It’s a football style mask as opposed to the plastic guard other players have used, but the difference doesn’t stop there: He has the letter “G” formed from part of the face mask If I played baseball I’d totally have a customized face mask An article about the Nationals and the shift Basically in the article, the Nats say that their pitching staff lets them be as effective as everyone else without using the shift The article makes the case that that’s kind of bogus, Nationals pitchers aren’t magic This was interesting to me because of the extreme length of the baseball season and in light of the recent (mostly dumb) comments from Charles Barkley about metrics as well as our discussion of metrics on this show a few episodes ago What happens is that people who haven’t studied statistics don’t really understand what it is they do. Sometimes people that have studied statistics don’t understand what they do. In the worst possible times people that understand what statistics do use them to trick people that don’t understand them. Some general statistical facts: Statistics are great at describing what has already happened Statistics are wonderful for understanding what will happen X times out of 1000 within a certain confidence interval (usually between 1 and 5 %) Statistics are terrible at predicting what will happen on the next shot, at bat, or pass. In fact, the odds of the statistics being off on the next action are quite poor. That’s why LeBron James can go 3 for 11 on his free throws against the Rockets and why the Splash Brothers can have a terrible night for Golden State. But over the course of the season, all three of those guys are going to be terrific. Some Heavy duty government tech stories Snowden wants back in(Reuters) Edward Snowden has apparently been working with German and American lawyers to return to the U.S. Officials in Washington have said he’d be welcomed back but he would have to stand trial for the charges that have been filed against him These are related to leaks of information related to NSA surveillance programs Snowden has said he’d stand trial if he could be assured of a fair trial Marc Raimondi(US Justice Department) has said “he will be accorded full due process and protections." Raimondi also said "Snowden is not a whistleblower. He is accused of leaking classified information and there is no question his actions have inflicted serious harms on our national security." Clinton email kerfuffle Apparently Hillary Clinton maintained a private email server in her Secret Service-protected home This has surfaced as a part of the Benghazi attacks Naturally there are some blustery comments from the Republican House and Republican-led committee in charge of the investigation: "It doesn't matter if the server was in Foggy Bottom, Chappaqua or Bora Bora," House Speaker John Boehner said. "The Benghazi Select Committee needs to see all of these emails, because the American people deserve all of the facts." The chairman of the Benghazi committee, Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., told reporters: "I want the documents. Sooner rather than later." Of course, the response from the Democrats is just as bad: "Everything I've seen so far has led me to believe that this is an effort to go after Hillary Clinton, period," said Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, the top Democrat on the committee. NBA Ray Allen’s out for the rest of the season, he’ll keep his options open for next year Josh Smith got booed in Atlanta, then called the fans bandwagoners I really love following everything Josh Smith does How can you not love the decision making of a man who shot over 100 3 point shots a season for 9 years and made 28% of them? Nuggets fired Brian Shaw Nuggets were 20-39 under Shaw and in 13th place in the west. More importantly, they were my 8 seed in our playoff predictions Chris Broussard reported that Shaw never really connected with the players in Denver and that Kenneth Fareid and Ty Lawson regressed under him Could the Nuggets make any more bad decisions? Why would you ever, ever fire George Karl? What good does it do you to fire a coach with six weeks left in the season? Some Google News Google Plus has changed leadership for the second time in just under a year Vic Gundotra left Google around 11 months ago and was succeeded by Dave Besbris Bradley Horowitz has taken over the social network now It’s looking like Photos and Hangouts will be split off from the Google+ itself Sundar Pichai said "I think increasingly you’ll see us focus on communications, photos, and the Google+ Stream as three important areas, rather than being thought of as one area." and Horowitz said "Just wanted to confirm that the rumors are true -- I’m excited to be running Google’s Photos and Streams products!" OSX 10.10.3 is now available in public beta It includes the new Photos app from Apple that will replace iPhoto and Aperture If you have a spare machine that you can test beta software on, or just like living on the edge, then go for it Apparently you get new emoji too. Smiley face. 1.9 Billion phones were sold worldwide last year 1.2 Billion of those were smartphones. That’s just over 63% That’s a lot of phones Plug Andrew - The first DG Season 2 episode is live! The FCC was in the news this week. Something about regulation of something or other. We’ll hit some baseball, some basketball and some SlingTV. What did you do? (Games, books, movies, etc.)AndrewWatching some sports, some Saturday morning Food Network with my wifeFinally finished the Safehold series and I think I’m going to bump that to the first Delayed Geekification Season 2 episodeNow that I’m finished with that I’ll be starting season 2 real soonGone Girl(I have mixed feelings about this)WebbStar Wars: Darth Bane: Path of DestructionWatching Murray State roll through the competition - 24 in a rowReading some writers’ toolkit type stuff for upcoming writer’s conferenceProperty BrothersSports of courseTwo Big StoriesAndrew - FCC votes to reclassify broadband under Title 2 and includes mobile broadband under itCheck out The Daily Tech News show from last week for some good discussion of the whole situationWill prevent selective blocking or slowing of traffic as well as paid prioritizationCommissioner says there is no plan to regulate content on the internetRepublicans have introduced a bill to repeal the FCC's ability to regulate thisI think a bigger deal is the FCCs proposed rule to prevent states from banning municipal internetDoing so will encourage competition in the broadband spaceJonathan - A lot of opinions and thoughts about FCC ruling. One thing to keep in mind, this may not even go into effect. The FCC rules won't be official until maybe summertime. Then major telecom companies will challenge new rules in court. A judge might put the rules on hold. The next president, if Republican, could let this fizzle away.Five reasons the FCC might be wrong about net neutrality via @gigaomMark Cuban is not a fan (and he’s not a Republican by the way)7 things Net neutrality won't do via @CNETNot trying to be difficult but genuinely want to ask a question - when has the government ever done something exactly as they planned? After net neutrality vote, an uncertain future for the Internet via Washington PostGame TimeOur stupid game is broken because of Milwaukee, but Washington may bring it back to life. So instead:Who’s got the most old-man game in the league? There’s some confusion about this so let me set the record straight.Picture yourself at a local church league or YMCA or rec league. Most of the guys on the court are in their twenties to early forties. some of them are good, some of them not. But as the evening wears on you start to notice a dude in his late fifties, maybe early sixties. He’s not the fastest or the strongest guy out there, how could he be? But as you watch this guy, he is owning everyone else on the court. It’s not athleticism or power, he doesn’t have any. It’s all mental. He’s got moves you didn’t think a human could make. He hustles on every play. He’s getting in other players heads and messing with their minds. He owns this league and everyone knows it.So with that said, we’re not just looking for the oldest player still playing. we’re trying to find the crafty one, the guy that gets in your head, who knows how to get away with that little kick-out and get the foul called when he’s taking a three. You know the tricks, so who’s got em?The News (do our headlines and story discussion here, tech, news and sports all together)Baseball's a comin'!Spring training has officially startedJosh Hamilton relapseThis apparently came from Josh Hamilton, it wasn’t a failed drug testNone of this is public yet, and there’s still debate about whether or not he’d be treated as a first time offenderFirst time offender would just mean he’d be entering the MLB’s substance abuse programIf he’s treated as a repeat offender he’d be subject to a suspensionHe was suspended from 03-05 but this was before he was on a major league team, thus the confusionSpring training games in Cuba?Apple has an event coming up!Probably an Apple watch comingPossibly some new computersSling TV continues to add more stuffEpix movie channel package for on-demand moviesWill cost between 5 and 15 dollarsDo you care about a 14 second UFC fight?Ronda Rousey won via armlock?I'm not going to pretend I know anything about this sport, but it seems like a fight should last longerHer last three fights have lasted 66, 16, and 14 secondsRousey is a US Olympic Medalist in judoApparently you can't watch a highlight if the whole event was 14 seconds long, thoughYouTube Kids"Makes it safer and easier to children to find videos on topics they want to explore"Free on Google Play and the App StoreParental controlsTimerSound SettingsSearch Settings-limits the app to pre-selected videosGoogle calls it the "first step toward reimagining YouTube for families"NBA talkHarden kicked Lebron in the junk tonight. So that matchup is getting testyIt was really subtle, like I’ve said before, Harden’s got old man game, this is in character as far as I’m concernedHe was assessed a flagrant foul and stayed in the gameWith that said, who do you think is the MVP?Big story out of the league office: Reports will now be published grading the calls of officials“The league will release play-by-play reports of all calls and relevant no-calls in the final minutes of close games. Such information had been shared only internally.”“The reports will focus on the last two minutes of games that were within five points at the two-minute mark and all of any overtime periods.”This type of report was previously only shared internally at the NBAThe reports will include the grade (correct or incorrect) a comment and a link to a video used to make the determinationIf you want to check out the calls starting Monday you can visit official.nba.comSocial and Feedback@jchandlerwebbjchandlerwebb.com@daboytermachinecompatible.com@machinecompReview on iTunesmachinecompatible@gmail.comSupport@patreon.com/machinecompatible

"Some are funny; some are serious; some I wrote in frustration." Some also contain the email addresses, home addresses, phone numbers, and social security numbers of Florida residents. The emails are available in Outlook format, and can be searched on the web at Bush's website.”Also, people, don’t send your SSN to your governor in an email. That’s stupid.Technically, Florida’s “legal custodian of records” is responsible for this breach, the penalty, according to state law, is a fine "not exceeding $500."
