We're already on the 7th chapter of our second Harry Potter book and we can't wait to talk about.... The Avengers? We may have made it through "Mudbloods and Murmurs" from the Chamber of Secrets but at this point we hadn't yet made it through 'Avengers: Endgame' so while we do go in depth about the chapter, Myke also can't help but be distracted. Don't worry, we still talk about why Lockheart, who is an imposter, doesn't have imposter syndrome, how Hagrid is like Shrek, and fake racism in a world full of real racism! If there's anything coming up in this book that you want us to talk about on air, email us your questions - either written or recorded - to magiclessmyke@gmail.com, or tweet us @magiclessmyke and follow us on Insta @magiclessmyke!
We've reached halfway into the Chamber of Secrets, the book, just as the Chamber of Secrets in the story is just opening. As we review chapter nine, 'The Writing on the Wall' we talk about wizarding world purification, why Myke really hates Gilderoy Lockhart, and the last episode of Game of Thrones. What? You thought we'd go tangent free in these times?! If there's anything coming up in this book that you want us to talk about on air, email us your questions - either written or recorded - to magiclessmyke@gmail.com Twitter & Instagram @magiclessmyke
In the tenth chapter of the Chamber of Secrets the trio tricks Lockhart into letting them check out a book on magic drugs from the library, Harry pulls a Leo and breaks his arm, and we meet back up with an old friend! Of course we don't just talk about that as Game of Thrones just ended forever, we just saw an advanced screening of Booksmart, and Myke needs to bring up his own tales of breaking his arm again. It's a classic Magicless Myke. Night time addition. Because we tired. After the thrilling cliffhanger of Chapter 11 of 'The Chamber of Secrets' we jump into this chapter wondering how Harry is going to get out of THIS predicament -- only to be let down. But we get up again as the kids go on more fun, children's adventure hijinks like: drugging other kids, stealing identities, consorting with the wizard alt-right - and more! Of course Myke has to bring up how this chapter reminds him of Animorphs, for very obvious reasons and we listen to TWO whole Wizard Rock songs! If there's anything coming up in this book that you want us to talk about on air, email us your questions - either written or recorded - to magiclessmyke@gmail.com, or tweet us @magiclessmyke and follow us on Insta @magiclessmyke!
As July winds down so does our journey into The Chamber of Secrets with this week's climactic chapter 'The Heir of Slytherin'. Harry Potter is all alone now and entering the titular Chamber to save Ginny Weasley! We get into how crazy it is for a twelve year old boy to be in this situation, how dumb Tom Riddle seems to be about magic despite having conjured up a sick ploy, and our dog Crystal finally gets on the mic! I promise its a relatively tangent free, Potter centric episode! If there's anything coming up in this book that you want us to talk about on air, email us your questions - either written or recorded - to magiclessmyke@gmail.com, or tweet us @magiclessmyke and follow us on Insta @magiclessmyke!
Slytherins be slithering on this, the seventh chapter of Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban. Draco is up to his old tricks again and Snape is enabling him. Or is Snape the bigger bully here. Marian once again tries to move Myke's affection against Snape as they talk about the first potions class of the year. Then they get into the titular 'Boggart in the Wardrobe' and see Remus Lupin teaching in action. Have we found a part of PoA that was actually improved on in the movie? We also get an *interesting* voicemail from best-friend-of-the-show Luisa, get into our weirdest childhood fears, and preview our upcoming horror movie challenge! If there's anything coming up in this book that you want us to talk about on air, email us your questions - either written or recorded - to magiclessmyke@gmail.com, or tweet us @magiclessmyke and follow us on Insta @magiclessmyke! *PLEASE LEAVE MESSAGES RESPONSIBLY ;)*
With the Prisoner of Azkaban behind us we move on to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire with Chapter 1: The Riddle House! Longtime HP pal of Marian, Sam joins us for the first time on the podcast! We talk about the dark cold open detailing the true crime cold open in what is definitely the darkest opening to the series yet! Welcome to Magicless Myke - A Harry Potter podcast where Marian Ladiona takes her brother Myke through the entire saga of The Boy Who Lived for the first time, book by book, a chapter per episode. In this first episode, we start off with our histories with Harry Potter, the books and the movies, the Harry Potter fandom, and bad British accents. Then we get into the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - magic, intellectual elitism, fat shaming and all! Follow us on twitter @magiclessmyke or e-mail us at magiclessmyke@gmail.com!
In this episode we cover Chapter 2 of 'The Sorcerer's Stone': The Vanishing Glass. Myke gives his elementary school style book report on the first chapter where Harry can talk. He and Marian talk about fat-shaming bad guys, #HamburgerRestaurants, and talking to kids about death! We also prove to you that every episode about singular chapters in a children's book aren't going to be that long. Also, we find out if Myke's English accent gets better. Thanks again to Jaime Villalvazo Jr and Signature Tracks for our awesome into and outro songs! Follow us on twitter @magiclessmyke or e-mail us at magiclessmyke@gmail.com!
In this episode we cover Chapter 3 of 'The Sorcerer's Stone': The Letters From No One. While the Dursleys try to keep a letter away from Harry, we talk about the administrative roles of Hogwarts, what Myke knows about the different Hogwarts houses, and a little about Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey - the main attraction at the Wizarding World in Universal Studios Hollywood. This episode covers Chapter 4 of The Sorcerer's Stone, The Keeper of the Keys. Marian introduces Myke to the world of wizard rock with the song I Am a Wizard by Harry and the Potters! In this episode, we're joined by Marian's best friend, Luisa, to discuss the fifth chapter of The Sorcerer's Stone, Diagon Alley! There's so much to talk about this epiosde: magical creatures, vegan wizards, Draco and the Malfoys, Hagrid, antisemitism, and goblins. We even briefly discuss Crimes of Grindelwald and Myke takes the Pottermore wand quiz! Thanks again to Jaime Villalvazo Jr and Signature Tracks for our awesome into and outro songs! The crew of the original Marvel-less Marian podcast is back together again as we talk about the sixth chapter of The Sorcerer's Stone - The Journey From Platform Nine and Three-Quarters! Our cousin Patrick fittingly joins us to talk about meeting our first wizarding family - the Weasleys! More importantly, Harry meets his near-future Hogwarts friends, and enemies, in a chapter about the magic of friendship! Our cousin Patrick joins us once again to rip-off The Sorting Chat for a whole episode while talking about the 7th chapter of The Sorcerer's Stone, The Sorting Hat! We try and probably fail to completely understand the differences between all the Hogwarts Houses. Then Michael takes the Pottermore Sorting Quiz! Will Michael be sorted into Ravenclaw? Listen and find out! And let us know your Hogwarts house, whether you've always identified to it and why, or fight us about any of our sorting choices on twitter @magiclessmyke or through e-mail at magiclessmyke@gmail.com! Thanks again to Jaime Villalvazo Jr and Signature Tracks for our awesome into and outro songs!
In this episode, we discuss Chapter 8 of The Sorcerer's Stone, The Potions Master! Finally, Harry gets to actually learn about magic. Join us as we talk about how the best magic classes are like science classes, how attending Hogwarts would be terrifying for a child, how JK Rowling doesn't believe in the Common Core, and keep trying to figure out the rules of this magical world. Sorry for our vanishing act, but Magicless Myke is back with our first episode in 2019! Our sister Missy joins us to talk about the 9th chapter in The Sorcerer's Stone, The Midnight Duel. First we talk about why Harry Potter feels like a Christmas story (we recorded this on Christmas), then we get into all the sexual innuendos about brooms and wands. Missy does some impressions. Myke loves Quidditch. Marian plays a wizard rock song. We're sorry for abandoning you. We'll never do it again. Thanks again to Jaime Villalvazo Jr and Signature Tracks for our awesome into and outro songs! Follow us on twitter @magiclessmyke or e-mail us at magiclessmyke@gmail.com!
This week, we go over the 10th chapter of The Sorcerer's Stone, Halloween. First, we finally address the Pottermore wizard shit trivia controversy and how gross and stupid wizards are and then we talk about the horrors of living at Hogwarts again. We try to figure out whether Quidditch is a good sport (Myke uses it as an excuse to talk about basketball) and why Hermione likes Ron and Harry. Listen to hear us try to deliver all the iconic lines. Thanks again to Jaime Villalvazo Jr and Signature Tracks for our awesome into and outro songs! Follow us on twitter @magiclessmyke or e-mail us at magiclessmyke@gmail.com.
Our cousin Patrick returns once again to go over the 11th chapter of The Sorcerer's Stone, Quidditch! The Marvel-less Marian crew reunites to talk about Snape's sinister motives, how the boys use Hermione immediately, and mostly we spend a lot of time comparing Quidditch to basketball. We have wanted to get our guest for this episode from day 1, but she specifically requested to recap this chapter then proceeded to fly out to Southern California from Ohio to join us (it was actually just a vacation she was planning on taking that happened to work out for us too)! She's the first of Marian's longtime Harry Potter internet friends that we're planning to meet on the pod, and a podcast aficionado herself - Shannon Daly graces the show this week for what may be our most jam packed episode yet! We talk about visiting the Wizarding World of Harry Potter that day, try some Every Flavor Beans that we got from the park, and Shannon and Marian reminisce on their formative decade long friendship that was mostly informed by being huge fans of the books! Of course we also talk about Chapter 12 of The Sorcerer's Stone - 'The Mirror of Erised' and Myke finds out how there can be even more magic in the books than the movies as they revel in Harry's Happy Christmas, the sloppiest of childhood investigations, what we would use an invisibility cloak for, and whether or not we'd want to talk about what we think we'd see in the mirror.
Have we just begun the third act of The Sorcerer's Stone? Hopefully, since it's the 13th chapter. In this episode, we discuss the trio's discovery of Nicolas Flamel's identity, the Quidditch game between Hufflepuff and Gryffindor, and Neville's character development. Don't worry, we also discuss a bunch of random irrelevant shit too, like how at the end of the episode we hear strange noises outside our house and actually go out to investigate. The first Magicless Myke with real life intrigue and adventure! Follow us on twitter and instagram @magiclessmyke or e-mail us at magiclessmyke@gmail.com.
