Description

Steam Locomotives were some of the most powerful machines ever built. They represent vision, ingenuity, collaboration, and extraordinary human achievement. However, to get to the next destination, they had to be directed to the mainline. This required someone directing the train through a series of switches to reach the right destination. Just like these amazing machines, leaders and organizations alike need the right direction to reach their destinations. Intelligent Leadership is the key to success and cultural transformation. With over 50 years of combined success in executive leadership, cultural transformation, and executive and emerging leader development, Rich Baron and Maikel Bailey bring to light some of the most pressing issues facing leaders and organizations today. Hand-picked and certified by the world’s top leadership development authority, John Mattone, we will partner with you to improve your leadership ability and cultural transformation in ways you never thought possible. I, Leader

I, Leader

2024-04-1530:57

Leadership is characterized by the complex and diverse nature of human values, which can be fluid, contradictory, and at times, difficult to define. This is why human elements such as common sense, continuous learning, adapting on the fly, understanding cause and effect, the ability to reason effectively, and moral decision-making are critical elements of leadership that will never be replaced by AI.However, try as they might, some believe that AI can replace, or enhance the part of leadership that will always and must be human. Human interaction is, and always will be, at the core of true leadership. Rich and Maikel discuss how AI falls short of leadership in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. As the labor market cools, companies are increasing their efforts to bring workers back to the office, though not necessarily requiring them to come in five days a week. The trend towards remote work is still ongoing, with some employers enforcing a return to office policy, but not necessarily on a full-time basis. There is an increasing agreement that while working in-person has benefits, there are also advantages to remote work, at least some of the time. However, the precise contours of the new hybrid status quo are still a work in progress. From a leadership standpoint, it is a potential train wreck in the making. To effectively maintain a highly functional culture, and balance organizational success, this will take a new breed of leader who are adept at keeping their fingers on the pulse of how this fast-changing reality is evolving.  The days of promoting great individual contributors to leadership positions without high-level leadership development and business acumen are in the past.Rich and Maikel discuss the new hybrid status-quo business models in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. The Ghost of HR

The Ghost of HR

2024-04-0222:15

As job coaches, Maikel and I have seen a disturbing trend in the practice of HR ghosting candidates after multiple interviews.  This is starting to become an expected trend for several of our job seekers that we work with. Ghosting candidates after an interview is not a professional or respectful practice. It also speaks volumes about your personal leadership ability as well as the culture present in the organization you represent. It is important for HR to communicate with candidates, whether they are being moved forward in the hiring process or not. Providing timely closure to candidates, even if it is a rejection, shows respect for their time and effort in applying and interviewing for the position. Ghosting candidates can create a negative experience and impression of the company, which can impact the company's reputation and ability to attract top talent in the future.Rich and Maikel discuss the increasing trend of ghosting job candidates in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. We live in a society where instant gratification has become the norm. For some reason, leadership has become something that is now a fast-track exercise. Global surveys on leadership, as well as employee feedback, show that the fast track isn't working. Quite frankly, it never has.Too often, leaders are attempting to fast-track their careers without taking the necessary time to develop their skills and gain valuable experience. This can lead to problems down the line, as they may not have the necessary understanding and expertise to effectively lead a team or organization. Leaders need to be patient and put in the hard work to truly earn their position, rather than rushing to the top without putting in the necessary effort. By taking the time to develop their skills and gain experience, leaders can ensure that they are well-equipped to handle the challenges and responsibilities that come with their role.Rich and Maikel talk about real leadership and why skipping the express elevator to the top has real merit on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. How many times have you felt as a leader that people just aren't listening to what you have to say? You start to feel as if nothing you say has any importance at all to the people you are talking to, regardless of who they are in the organization. You conclude that people just don't care what you have to say, or are out to get you. Most of the reasons people may not listen to you are because of you – so be a person that they want to listen to. Be a person who listens to themselves, who speaks well and tells interesting stories well, who talks with the right people, and who is trustworthy and has a good reputation. And most importantly, has a genuine interest in getting to know the folks you work with.Rich and Maikel talk about effective communication in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. In part 2 of this series, we go even further down the rabbit hole of narcissistic behavior in leadership. These are the folks who could give a toxic culture an even worse name. These are the relationship manipulators, rumor starters, dirt gatherers, and smile in your face while twisting the proverbial knife types. All in the name of making themselves look that much better in a twisted attempt to climb the ladder on the backs of those they betray. The Grinch wouldn't be caught in the same room with these folks!Rich and Maikel go a shade darker to enlighten those leaders who need to turn it down a notch in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.  Thank you to all of our listeners in over 70 countries and 600 cities worldwide, we greatly appreciate your support! Dorian Gray from all outside appearances was the ideal vision of youth.  He lived a life of hedonism and excess, constantly seeking pleasure and indulging in his every whim. He remained young and beautiful and from all outside appearances, it looked as though he had everything going for him. However, on the inside was a different story and the portrait that held his true image showed the monster he had become. Dorian Gray's story serves as a cautionary tale for those who are chasing their career goals at any and all cost. In part 1 of a 2 part series, Rich and Maikel uncover the portrait of leadership for those who would sell out others to obtain their goals in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. Imposter Syndrome (IS) is a psychological pattern characterized by chronic self-doubt and a pervasive fear of being unmasked as a fraud, despite evidence of competence and success. Those experiencing Imposter Syndrome often attribute their accomplishments to external factors, discounting their abilities and contributions. Imposter Syndrome can have a significant impact on one's mental health and well-being, as it can create a cycle of negative self-talk and undermine confidence and self-worth. It can also lead to self-sabotaging behaviors. In leadership positions, IS can result in a  toxic work environment and a lack of trust and confidence in those leaders suffering from IS.To overcome Imposter Syndrome, it is important to challenge negative thoughts and beliefs, practice self-compassion and acceptance, seek support from an executive coach, trusted friends, family, or a therapist, and reframe success as a result of hard work and skill rather than luck or external factors. Rich and Maikel discuss how to deal with Imposter Syndrome in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. Are You Uncommon?

Are You Uncommon?

2024-03-0538:39

Global surveys show that the vast majority of leaders are struggling. Some surveys are as low as 75%, while others show that 91% of all leaders are failing. One reason they cannot escape their challenges is they have a gap; they are lacking in one area or derailing in another. Think about a sports team that is having trouble winning. A good coach can often pinpoint the problem and steer the team back on the road to success by assessing the team's gaps and refocusing their efforts on the fundamentals of the game. Like sports and virtually every other discipline in the world, leadership has its own fundamentals. There are five fundamental principles that uncommon leaders know and live by. Uncommon leaders are those who seek to engage and develop others and make them feel valued. So, how are you doing with your leadership fundamentals? In this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT, Rich and Maikel will talk about those five fundamental principles that uncommon leaders have in common. In a previous episode, we asked the question, "Would You Hire Yourself as a Leader?  How many of you who listened to that episode, took the challenge, and inventoried your skills and talents as a leader? Would you hire yourself to lead your organization to success, regardless of the title or presumed perks that senior leadership comes with? We are back with a similar question on whether or not you would recommend yourself to your organization to be a leader. So many would consider their educational pedigree as enough qualification. Would you be disappointed if we told you that is not enough, not by a long shot? What we are asking you is to inventory your real-world leadership skills and talents dealing with the day-to-day that can only be gained through time and experience. So take the challenge and ask yourself, would I recommend myself as a leader?Rich and Maikel discuss what it takes to be an effective leader in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. Legacy toxicity is a term increasingly prevalent in organizational discourse. It refers to the deeply ingrained negative elements within a workplace's culture and practices.  Not only is this the resulting legacy of poor leadership, but it can also be the result of a hidden agenda, a poorly managed acquisition, runaway silos, or poor leadership selection. It is a disappointing realization that sometimes the grass is not always greener on the other side and can be the same old noxious weed patch. Rich and Maikel discuss what happens when the new boss is the same as the old boss in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. There are a lot of Executive Coaches out there.  Some say that the market is saturated, but they're wrong. The simple fact of the matter is that there are not enough extraordinary coaches in practice today.  To be an effective business coach, you must have real-world experience. They don’t teach the day-to-day of the workplace in school. You have to have been there and done that to have the insights and relatable examples. In terms of coaches, an executive coach should have prior experience working at a high level in a corporation or as a successful entrepreneur for a significant period. They should have had direct-line responsibilities and bottom-line accountability, with a considerable number of employees reporting to them in various scenarios. In addition, they should have a coaching certification showing that they have put in the time to learn how to coach. Only coaches with this kind of experience can truly understand the situation you are facing and provide effective guidance.Yes, there are a lot of folks hanging out the shingle to be a coach, but who do you want to guide you, and your organization to success? To coin another catchphrase, "Choose Wisely."Rich and Maikel discuss the relevance of executive coaching in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. The Golden Rule - the moral precept that asks us to treat others as we would like others to treat ourselves. A simple concept that seems to be all but a thing of the past. As a society, this is reflected in declining social graces. Fowl language is now part of daily discourse. Contempt for authority is rife. People hide behind social media platforms with Cheeto-stained fingers and can call each other names, put down another person's viewpoint, or simply be faceless bullies. Town hall meetings have become screaming matches and the more crazy a Karen is, the more views the video gets. But what about our workplaces?Rich and Maikel unpack the issues around civil discourse in the workplace in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. To be honest, when it comes to AI, Isaac Asimov comes to mind with his book, I, Robot. With the three primary laws of robotics, along with the movie starring Will Smith, AI seemed to be far-flung and futuristic.  Never had there been a consideration that AI could help in the coaching process. The primary concern would be that the human element that is so crucial to the coach/client relationship would start to diminish. Or worse, be replaced by a supercomputer named VIKI and guarded by homicidal NS-5 robots. However, our guest on today's episode, Samiur Rahman, has dispelled some of those concerns. In reality, for professional coaches, generative AI can be immensely helpful in several ways. for example,  AI could automate the tasks of preparing for sessions, which coaches spend a lot of time on, or, analyze past interactions and behaviors to create customized content to help individuals improve in specific areas. Samiur Rahman is the CEO and Co-founder of the company, Heyday. Along with his business partner, Sam DeBrule, their organization focuses on helping coaches become more efficient by eliminating some of the tedious tasks associated with coaching, allowing the coach to spend more effective time with their clients.Join Rich and Maikel as they discuss AI with Samiur and its impact on coaching on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. While the traditional characteristics of physical strength and dominance may still hold some relevance, many companies are now focusing on a more nuanced understanding of leadership. The modern definition of an "Alpha" leader encompasses a broader range of qualities beyond mere assertiveness.Leadership in contemporary businesses is increasingly associated with emotional intelligence, empathy, collaboration, and adaptability. Effective leaders are those who can build strong relationships, understand and support their team members, and navigate complex organizational dynamics. They prioritize the well-being and growth of their team and foster an inclusive and diverse work environment. In other words, an effective Alpha leader is the first line of defense for their team and organization. In the second part of this series, we discuss the healthy attributes of a genuine Alpha leader in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. Approximately 70% of all senior executives are considered Alphas, making them an integral part of modern corporations. The term "alpha" derives from the first letter of the Greek alphabet (Α, α), symbolizing dominance in a given field. Attaining the top position necessitates possessing a unique set of skills and qualities that are exceedingly rare. Note that we are not referring to the top 1% but rather the even more exclusive 0.01%.The high-performing Alpha Leader is at the apex of power, wealth, influence, and affluence. However, are Alphas good or bad for today's organizations? In this two-part series, we discuss both sides of the Alpha equation. So join Rich and Maikel as we discuss just who are the Alpha leaders and the impact they have on business on today's episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. A prevalent statement you often come across is, "HR serves the company, not the employees." This statement holds true! However, it does not imply that HR is inherently untrustworthy or that you should anticipate them to be confrontational when seeking assistance. Human Resources fulfills an important and complex role in balancing what’s best for the company with what is best for its employees. When employees experience interpersonal issues at work, HR is often considered as the go-to. But what do you do when HR ignores the problem, makes it worse, or is the problem? An HR problem is incredibly damaging to an organization and its reputation. It can create a toxic company culture that impedes productivity, collaboration, and increases resignations. Furthermore, HR can also create problems regarding prospective employees in the recruitment process, repelling great candidates, or ignoring the talent that the organization truly needs.Rich and Maikel discuss issues in HR in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. Mistakes are an inherent part of life, and they have the power to shape us positively if we choose to perceive them that way. Instead of fearing or avoiding mistakes, we should embrace them as valuable lessons in our journey of personal and professional development. When we make mistakes, it indicates that we took a risk, tried something new, and stepped out of our comfort zone. Whether small or significant, every mistake offers a chance to gain knowledge, wisdom, and resilience.  However, when leaders attempt to conceal or disregard their mistakes, shift blame onto others, or choose to ignore issues hoping they will magically disappear, it is during these moments that trust begins to erode.Rich and Maikel discuss the ability to channel our inner idiot into positive outcomes on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.  Thank you to all of our listeners in over 70 countries and 600 cities worldwide, we greatly appreciate your support! Executive Presence (EP) is a fairly recent term that outlines the perceived qualities of what a senior manager or C-Suite executive must have. Up-and-coming leaders have long been told that to be considered for these roles, they must demonstrate “Executive Presence” (EP). These attributes include gravitas, communication, and appearance traits. In 2012 these attributes included a blue-chip pedigree, the ability to command a room, and a slick, polished, tall look with lots of youthful vim and vigor.  However, over the past decade as a result of the pandemic, political and economic instability, social movements, and changing workplace technologies, what people expect from leaders has changed. But what are some of the new EP requirements (read the article in HBR here)? Although some of the required attributes have stayed relatively the same, and some have been improved, many of the new requirements feel, well, a bit watered down. So the question arises, has EP improved over the last decade? Or perhaps, are we allowing leaders to hang out in the kiddie pool? Global statistics on leadership indicate the latter (check out the hottest item in business today for those statistics).Rich and Maikel dive into the deep end of EP on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. Globally, leadership challenges today are an existential one. When faced with crises, we humans tend to default to our muscle memory, that is, do it because that is how we have always done it. But how we have led in the past will not take us where we aspire to be. The time has come to embrace a new kind of leader who is prepared to take on the promise of innovative problem-solving, as well as innovative relationship-building. A leader who is willing and able to unleash the abundant talents and passions all around them, and leverage them to create a better world. In this episode, we discuss three styles of leaders called the ABCs of leadership, which are the Architect, Builder, and Catalyst. Join us on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.
