"Foretold" is the newest podcast from the L.A. Times, and we're sharing a preview of the first episode with you here today. In the fall of 2019, reporter Faith E. Pinho received a tip from a woman named Paulina Stevens. Paulina claimed she had grown up in an insular Romani community in California, where she was raised to be a wife, mother and fortuneteller — until she decided to break away. That first call unraveled a story spanning multiple continents, hundreds of years, and complex metaphysical realities.  Follow "Foretold" to hear new episodes every Tuesday.

Thank you so much Paige St. John. I enjoyed this podcast very much, especially episode seven. Extremely well written and produced. It’s a story that is unforgettable. A story that is terrifying and historically fascinating, infuriating and eye-opening. Rape is Psychological and physical torture to anyone, whether male or female victims. It was also important to mention the husbands that were also victimized and traumatized. Thank you. Women have traveled a long and difficult road to being treated like a human and not property. Again Thank you!

Also sickens me that some people see Bonnie as the cause of this disgusting mans problem. Bonnie was a victim too. He was selfish and controlling. And he terrorized her with a gun! Joe is the only one to blame. He is the only one who is responsible for the choices he made.

Statute of limitations?! There shouldn’t ever be a time limit when it comes to crimes that harm people!! Infuriating. It angers me to think how many police departments failed on this case, allowing this man to terrorize, rape, and murder

"back in the day there was no treatment for the victims, now we have pseudoscience" its a shame they are still victims, now of bad science.

You people bitching about the ads idiots!! You need to grow up and should shut up or simply not listen to it. If there was a fee for listening to the podcast you people would whine about that too, but then again, children whine about everything. When or if you are old enough and mature enough to work for a living, will you be willing to work for free?? Of course you wouldn't!! The ads provide a free venue for you to listen to the podcasts while enabling the writer and staff to receive an income to pay for living expenses!! Not everyone chooses, desires or whines enough to their parents to allow them to live at home with their mommy and daddy so that they won't have to work. Get a job and get a life idiots!!

as a christian I think this is really sad. I know what the word of God says about rapists. they should be put to death. instead we live in a nation that lets murderers and rapists either live with free food or give them ten years in prison just so they can get out and do it again. there is hope though. mans form of justice is skewed, perverted, and temporary. the justice of God is perfect and no one gets away.

Shocking listening! Those poor women after all these years the affect it still has on them just brings home how absolutely awful this was for them. Really informative and although horrific at times to listen Paige told it very well. It's a real shame it took so long to catch him!

This was so the 70’s. Rape victims had no voice or anyone to talk to. Horrible police work for victims also.
