Description

Man vs Mind is a mental health podcast all about what's going on inside the mind of the modern man.

Tim and J are two average guys, with zero shame chatting about everything to do with men's mental health – the stuff men usually keep to themselves. From therapy and fatherhood to anxieties, insecurity, obsessions, gym guilt and crying at TV ads, it’s real talk without the preach.

No experts, no fixes – just honest, funny, sometimes painfully relatable conversations about the mental health stuff that we often deflect away from, or just say “yeah, I'm not too bad thanks.”

We're trying to normalise guys talking about their mental health, and if what we're doing helps just one other man feel like they're able to just... I dunno... chat about what's going on in their head, then that's mission accomplished as far as we're concerned.

We hope you'll enjoy the ride as we deep dive inside the mind of the average guy.

Disclaimer: neither of us are mental health professionals, we don't dispense psychological advice, just anecdotes and perhaps a bit of taboo-busting as we chat about the things that don't normally get said.

We'd love to hear from you – the good, the bad, the hilarious, the savage – anything!

Money is one of the biggest causes of stress in our lives — yet it’s the one thing we almost never talk about openly. In Part Two of the Man vs Money mini-series, Tim and J dig into the taboo of talking about finances, why we go silent when asked about money, and how cultural differences shape whether we’re open or closed about it.From social pressure to “keep up,” to the shame of saying “I can’t afford it,” and the awkwardness of borrowing from family or friends, this episode explores how money impacts friendships, marriages, and self-worth.Tim opens up about having to borrow from his parents, J shares the struggles of surviving gatherings with nothing in the bank, and both reflect on the mental load of finances when raising kids.We also hear some unforgettable stories — from car rental disasters to near-death work trips in the US — and why even “good” financial news can be hard to share with friends. If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! It's the start of a new mini-series, and this is a big, devisive, tabooish, and expensive one: money. The root of all evil today, or so they say. Today, J and Tim get stuck into our early perceptions of money: our younger years exposure to money, how it shaped out attitudes towards it, and what it means to have (or not to have...) the coin. Does not having money encourage you to graft, to work harder and harder? Or is it traumatising? For many people, it's both. And the lads go into their earliest or most significant financial traumas in quite unflinching detail. We know it's taboo, but we'll be running loads of polls on this over on our Instagram account (@manvsmindpod) because money plays such an ENORMOUS role in mental health - for so many people. You're not the only one who overthinks, who spirals, who obsesses over that argument or the funny look someone gave you after you cracked a "joke".Today, Tim & J go over the "Oh my god if only I said that..." or the "jeeeez, what did that look mean? Did I just say something terrible? What if I've mortally offended them? It was just a joke, I didn't mean anything by it – so why did they look at me like that? What's wrong with me? What does that say about me as a person?"...oh wait... it was actually fine. And it's a return of the Non-Certified Therapy Club. Why do we compare ourselves to others? And how can you stop feeling like everyone else is doing better than you? Sometimes it’s hard to avoid feeling like everyone else is smashing life while you’re… well, just... existing. This week, Tim and J dive headfirst into the comparison trap: the ways we measure ourselves against friends, colleagues, influencers, and sometimes complete strangers – and how envy quietly eats away at our contentment. We talk social media feeds engineered to prey on insecurity, the workplace moments that trigger “why not me?”, and why validation feels good in person but dangerous online. There’s also stag do culture, AI shortcuts, body image insecurities, and Shakespeare’s 400-year-old take on the whole thing.Hopefully, you'll see this as a reminder that the most valuable things we’ve got can’t be measured or compared. If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! The burnout is real, and Tim's therapist (and Alexa, apparently) warned him it might happen...Today, we're chatting all about what burnout actually is, how it feels, and how we're trying to combat the effect that burning out has on mental health. Feeling neither happy nor sad, going through the motions, getting a bit downtrodden, and feeling sort of meh. It's all part of it, and it can happen to anyone - so we're here to give you a little friendly nudge and say "keep your eyes peeled", because it'll creep up on you. Elsewhere, Tim gets confused about homoerectus and J gets equally confused about anemones, before (again) asking if we can take Man vs Mind on a bodacious, excellent time travel adventure...So buckle up. If you're feeling like you can't put your finger on how you're feeling, if you're asking "am I burnt out? Do I have burnout?" then listen up.If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! We’ve pulled out all the stops for the final part of our Ageing mini‑series. This one’s a proper journey – funny, raw, honest and genuinely inspiring.Tim and J dive into the worst bits of getting older – the aches, the slowing down, back pain and that constant feeling of being more tired than you’d like. But then we flip it: wisdom, perspective, self‑assurance, joy in everyday life, and the privilege of seeing your kids grow up while knowing you’re never past it.And then… J’s Dad.We’ve taken his voice note and given it a full remix – poignant, uplifting, and honestly one of the most inspiring things we’ve ever put out. It’s the perfect way to end the series.Thank you for all your messages, your stories, your honesty. Birthdays aren’t always cake and candles.Sometimes they’re a spotlight you never asked for – a reminder of another year gone by, a quiet tally of who still cares enough to show up, or just a day that sparks a rush of awkward gratitude when all you really want is a sofa and some peace. In this episode, Tim and J dive into how our relationship with birthdays changes as we get older, and how those yearly milestones can trigger big questions about where we are in life. They also look back at moments they’d revisit in a heartbeat – some they’d handle differently, others they’d stay in forever. If you’ve ever wondered why your birthday feels different these days, or caught yourself longing to time‑travel back to a moment that felt perfect, you’re in the right place. If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Is it just us, or is time absolutely sprinting lately? Like, seriously, chill out please Father Time.In Part Two of our ageing mini-series, Tim and J try to get their heads around the weird acceleration of life. Why do the years feel shorter the older we get? Is it all the responsibility? The anxiety? Or just the fact that school summers used to feel like forever? We talk memory, mindfulness, the effects of mental health on how we experience time – and whether it’s actually possible to slow it all down. (Spoiler: J won’t be meditating any time soon.)Then, it’s time to dig out your emotional playlists for a section we’re calling The Soundtrack of our Lives – the songs that instantly transport us back. From Barbie Girl to Muse, to Tim’s wedding night (steady), we explore how music holds memories tighter than our brains ever could. Check out the playlist so far on Spotify in the link below. And finally, Tim tells a story. A real one. About his dad, a fishing trip, and a man who could very well have been a time-travelling Tim... bear with us... Is it just an INCREDIBLY weird coincidence, or something else entirely?Soundtrack of our Lives Playlist on SpotifyIf you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Who’s that old, tired man staring back from the bathroom mirror? Oh wait – it’s us.In the first part of our Man vs Ageing mini-series, Tim and J face the creeping signs of getting older – dodgy knees, deepening eye bags, shifting friendships, and the subtle emotional wobble that comes when your face starts to match how you feel.We talk about how our bodies have changed since becoming dads, how our social circles have naturally narrowed, and what it feels like to question whether you’re ageing “well” – or just ageing. We also trail what’s coming up in the series – the passing of time, the music that shaped us, milestone moments, and the idea that ageing doesn’t have to be a decline… it could be an evolution. If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! In this episode of Man vs Mind, we dive headfirst into our love/hate relationship with our phones. Are we addicted? Dependent? Or just trying to stay afloat in a digital tsunami of pings, pings, and more pings?Tim and J talk screen time shame, notification anxiety, and that weird little dopamine hit you get from absolutely nothing at all. We ask: what are we avoiding when we scroll? Can we even remember the last time we were truly bored? And how the hell do we balance being present dads with being on-call humans 24/7?Plus, we talk digital detoxes, bedtime routines, childhood screen time, and the sheer terror of being left alone with your own thoughts. We even consider a no-phone challenge. Also featuring: Zoiks, old BlackBerrys, the term “soporific”, and a return to the Non-Certified Therapy Club™.If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! From grounded flights to forest poos, the lads regroup after a chaotic week of travel, jet lag, and existential creaks in the knees. In today's Man vs Mind, Tim checks in from the UK while J’s stuck in Dubai after a last-minute trip gets grounded. What follows is a catch-up of two knackered dads trying (and mostly failing) to switch off – featuring overheated bedrooms, eerie city roads, toddler tantrums, and the very real stress of being nearly 40 but already falling to pieces.J talks about his body’s growing refusal to function after a daring soft play incident, prompting the start of a brand new challenge – getting a PT and seeing what happens when two very average men try to reclaim their physical fitness (and pride). We also introduce a new idea: the Non-Certified Therapy Club – a safe space for you to vent what’s been bugging you, physically or mentally, so we can share the load.Oh, and here's the link to our mention in Esquire this week 😍If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! What actually is stress? Is it a full-blown anxiety spiral – or just the slow drip of life admin, wet socks, and toddler tantrums that wear you down? This week on Man vs Mind, Tim and J dig into the chaos. From the boiling point of financial pressure to work mistakes and coffee machines that just won’t shut up, they unpack how modern stress shows up – and why we’re all so bloody bad at talking about it. There’s a little therapy, a lot of laughter, and even a brand-new game today: Stress Factor. They also get real about controlling what you can, walking away when you need to, and the simple power of saying “I’ve messed up.” Plus: meditation, disaster scenario planning, Peppa Pig interventions, and one very stressed-out toothbrushing situation. If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Got distracted halfway through writing this description. Which is fitting, really – because this week, it’s Man vs Focus. From childhood ADHD and adult procrastination, to multitasking meltdowns, hyperfocus hijacks, and the fine art of not doing your coursework until the literal night before (or just… getting drunk instead) – Tim and J go deep into the mess of modern attention. They talk about growing up with dyslexia, the wild energy of untamed thought spirals, and how anxiety throws order out the window. There’s also some love for cooking, quiet office pods, fidget beads, and the eternal search for silence that doesn’t feel like a vacuum.Whether you’ve ever forgotten what you were doing mid-task, or just find yourself Googling “Do I have ADHD or am I just tired?” – this one’s for you. No shame, no judgment, just real talk.Press play, stay with us (if your attention span allows it), and welcome to Man vs Focus. If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! This one was tough to record – so buckle in.In honour of Men’s Mental Health Month, we’re talking about what awareness really means – not just in the way people see you, but in the way you see yourself. We open up about the stuff we rarely say out loud – the grief that lingers for years, the anxiety attacks that hit like a truck, the everyday pressures that build quietly until they don’t. There are moments in this episode where we both come close to breaking, and maybe that’s the point: awareness isn’t always obvious. Sometimes it’s hidden in tiredness, stress, snappiness, silence. We ask: could we have seen it coming? Could we have spoken sooner? Could we have heard what our own minds were trying to tell us?It’s not always easy listening – but it’s real. And if something here sounds familiar, that’s exactly why we made it.If you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Fear. It creeps up in the dead of night, in dentist chairs, on balconies 65 floors up, and sometimes… in the form of your dad pranking you with a dead snake. In this episode, Tim and J dive headfirst into the irrational, the existential, and the unexpectedly hilarious world of fear – from man-made heights and dental trauma, to the call of the void **ominous music** and the terrifying thought of raising kids in a hyper-masculine world. They swap stories about escape room breakdowns, seaside shark realisations, and listener-submitted fears (spoiler: you’re not alone in being afraid of open water or people thinking you’re fake). It’s funny, raw, and occasionally heart-thumpy.Oh, and we talk about a guy who says that it's not "manly" to **checks notes** eat soup...Key themes:– Fear as a motivator– Irrational vs rational fear– Parenting and provider anxiety– Panic attacks and mental health– Weird listener confessions– Why clowns are the absolute worstIf you’re enjoying the show PLEASE consider leaving us a 5* rating and a few words to review the show - the algorithm loves it and it’ll help more people find the show ❤️❤️Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! This week, we’re knackered – we’re documenting it in real time, and we're trying to hack our brains into thinking we're not actually tired. Is that a thing?Well, it's based on absolutely zero scientific evidence except our own self-inflicted guinea pig trials. So let's see.Armed with a week’s worth of voice notes, J and Tim set out to fake energy until we feel it for real… but what we uncovered was something deeper. Why do our brains feel wired at 3am when we’re already maxed out? Why does stillness send us into shutdown? And what is tiredness actually trying to tell us?This one’s part experiment, part confession, part existential yawn.Let’s learn the language of fatigue together.Head to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content! Why do we drink? Is it fun? Habit? Celebration? Escape? Or just because saying no feels like social sabotage? In this episode of Man vs Mind, we take on alcohol – starting with the stupid (like Danger Can, a game involving a shaken can of beer and your forehead) and moving into the emotional. Tim shares stories of stress-fuelled nights that spiralled, including one that ended with crying, lost possessions, and a body covered in Spicey McChickens. J opens up about how drinking became a bit of a bad habit in his early parenting years, and how he’s had to rethink what it means to be present. We talk about drinking culture, why guys still beer pressure each other to stay for “just one more,” and how alcohol can often be the only time men feel comfortable opening up.In the second half, Tim shares how he’s become increasingly anxious about going out at all, and fears abandonment from his mates. And J struggles to describe the kind of bar they both avoid now: “a dance pub… no, not a club… but like… a trendy bar… you know what I mean.”Oh and J stops Tim dead in his tracks (and the show...) with a bit of unexpected Cockney Rhyming Slang...Disclaimer: while we had a lot of fun recording this episode, we appreciate that alcohol is a very sensitive subject for many people around the world. This week, we wrap up our Body Image mini-series with a deep dive into the things we do to feel better about ourselves — the gym routines, the crash diets, the attempts to get back control when we feel like we've lost it.We ran a poll asking what your coping mechanisms are. Most of you said restrictive dieting. Some said intense workouts. And a glorious 20% just went “meh, not bothered.” You are our heroes. Teach us.We also answer your AMA questions:Would we let our parents listen to this? (Uncomfortable.)What’s the most extreme thing we’ve done to look better? (Tim’s answer is… a lot.)How do you balance work, food, fitness, and raising a small human? (Short answer: you don’t. And that’s fine.)We talk mental health, cosmetic surgery, gym, and why the term “transformation” might not mean what you think it does. We wrap up with a few honest thoughts on acceptance — not the fluffy kind, just the type that lets you eat beige food with your kids without beating yourself up about it.And yes, Average Man is back.
