Talking points: relationshipsSo many men fall into a very specific (and usually confusing) trap. They're asked to "be more vulnerable", they go way too far with it, and it ends up pushing the partner into the mother/caregiver/therapist role way too often.I've talked about this before, but let's go deeper. Here's how to interpret what's actually being asked of you.(00:00:00) - What a woman does NOT mean, and one of the paradoxes of dating(00:07:48) - What does she want, really?(00:09:01) - What can’t be filled by romance—and what it actually takes(00:12:14) - Don’t project spiritual meaning onto sexual instinct***Tired of feeling like you're never enough? Talking points: mental health, masculinity, cultureWhen Movember reaches out, you answer the call. I'm grateful to have interviewed Professor John Oliffe on a recent report co-authored by him—and spearheaded by the Movember Institute for Men's Health. Some of the stats they've released left me a little surprised; like 2 in 5 men in Canada die prematurely, and from largely preventable casues. Listen to this one, team.(00:00:00) - Intro, and the premature mortality of men(00:10:29) - On co-constructed masculinity, and how modern complexity affects how we perceive manhood(00:16:26) - On “protest masculinity”, and what’s causing men to die early?(00:22:34) - Depression, suicide, and getting upstream of the risk factors(00:32:120) - Why hiding what you’re going through so common, and why some men dismiss the healthcare system(00:40:06) - What Dr. Oliffe would say to the man reluctant to see a therapist(00:44:49) - The changes and diversity of modern masculinityDr. John Oliffe is a Professor and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Men’s Health Promotion at the School of Nursing, University of British Columbia. Founder and lead investigator of UBC’s Men’s Health Research program, his work focuses on masculinities as it influences men’s health behaviours and illness management, and its impact on partners, families, and overall life quality. Findings drawn from his research offer guidance to clinicians and researchers to advance men’s health promotion in the areas of psychosocial prostate cancer care, smoking cessation and male suicide prevention. For those of you in Vancouver, check out the formal launch of John and Movember's work here: https://nursing.ubc.ca/community/events/2025/launch-real-face-of-mens-health-reportConnect with Dr. Oliffe-Website: www.menshealthresearch.ubc.ca-LinkedIn: http://ca.linkedin.com/in/johnoliffe***Tired of feeling like you're never enough? Talking points: relationships, cultureThis might bother some of you, but I think it needs discussing, because I get it all the time in comments, emails, and DMs: serious disappointment and frustration with dating. From men and women both. There are a lot of reasons for this, both surface-level and deeper, but here's what I'm seeing the most. (00:00:00) - Intro(00:05:04) - What we’re not actually teaching young men(00:08:14) - Where do we go from here?(00:11:04) - A gap I see in most relationships(00:13:37) - Have the conversation***Tired of feeling like you're never enough? A masculinity podcast that doesn’t suck! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Conner strikes an impactful balance between practice and theory in the interviews and solo ManTalks shows. The recent men’s work session episode with the anonymous guest was especially compelling. The interviews with female guests don’t suck - most of them leave me with a lot to think about! Finally, I love that ManTalks is not interrupted with A LOT of midroll ads. So much to learn for free here.

There is a lot more to the answer of why he is such a divisive figure. For one, he espouses beliefs that run counter to prevailing social trends. He shops his ideas in vocabulary lifted from right wing propaganda. Your definition of the word patriarchy seems dishonest in that the definition you gave sounds innocuous--but that is not the definition in current use by people today. People today use the word for a system. While the system definition has equally great social relevance, I suppose if you are looking at it through the lens of masculinity you would mainly see the positive aspects of the definition. If I'm wrong, help me understand.

Your comments about sovereignty and distance are key. When we start dating, there is a powerful draw for what the other person brings. Once it's yours already, already there, it doesn't have the same draw. In terms of mystery, maybe there is something to having separate rooms and undressing together only for sex. Overfamiliarity is the price of losing mystery. Finally, don't use the restroom with each other.

Good stuff in here, that in a lifetime of sex I had never thought of. Maybe most of us don't know the answer to the question of how we want to feel during sex.

This podcast has been the foremost authority on modern men for me. I read extensively and listen to multiple podcasts daily but after subscribing to this one 4 months ago I've listened to most episodes. The quality of guests is always great. Connors mini episodes are extremely insightful and allow heaps of introspection should you choose to go deeper. Anyone wanting to grow and challenge themselves to be a better man, this is the podcast you need! 5 stars.
