Bethel Christian Academy Expansion Plan The Cobb County Board of Commissioners will review Mt. Bethel Christian Academy's expansion master plan during a zoning hearing. The plan aims to replace temporary classrooms with permanent buildings and relocate sports facilities on its high school campus, which can accommodate up to 625 students. The academy, independent of Mt. Bethel Church, faces a lease termination for its lower and middle schools, necessitating new facilities by 2028. Proposed changes include new academic buildings, improved traffic access, and relocated sports facilities, sparking opposition from local residents concerned about disruption and lack of detailed plans. Commissioner JoAnn Birrell plans a campus walkthrough before the hearing. STORY 3: 'You Deserve It': Veteran Detainees Presented with Resources at Cobb Jail Cobb County Sheriff Deputy Nedra Handia discovered numerous resources for veterans, including the Cobb County Veterans Accountability and Treatment Court and The Warrior Alliance, after connecting with Vietnam veteran Daniel Hydrick. The board voted 6-0 to halt the project, initially approved in March 2023, which faced criticism for its cost and lack of detailed planning. Critics included board member Becky Sayler and the citizen group Watching the Funds — Cobb. The group has grown, with members sharing stories of delayed packages, including essential items like medication. Despite FedEx's statement about efforts to resolve delays, many customers remain dissatisfied, expressing their concerns on social media. Evans now avoids using FedEx for non-express shipments, citing ongoing unresolved issues at the Austell hub. STORY 7: Ruby's Sourdough Pizza Opens in Smyrna Ruby’s Sourdough Pizza in Smyrna aims to create a community hub with its freshly-made sourdough pizzas and inviting dining space. Ragsdale Tells Lawmakers No to Phone Ban, Yes to THC Crackdown Superintendent Chris Ragsdale of Cobb County School District stated he won’t impose a cellphone ban, trusting teachers to manage classrooms. This contrasts with Marietta City Schools, where Superintendent Grant Rivera implemented a middle school ban on cellphones and smartwatches, managed via locked pouches, which received positive feedback. Ragsdale supports a flexible, school-specific approach, citing cellphones’ educational benefits. He voiced concern over student access to e-cigarettes and THC, urging stricter regulations and highlighting the severe legal consequences of THC possession. He also called for harsher penalties for school threat makers, citing the disruptions caused by over 80 false threats this year. To enhance safety, Ragsdale partnered with private intelligence firm Servius Group without board approval, stirring controversy. Though he described the partnership as critical for safety, some questioned its financial transparency. Meanwhile, Sen. Kay Kirkpatrick offered collaboration on stricter THC regulations to further safeguard students. For more news about our community, visit mdjonline.com. From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Wednesday, December 11th and I'm Keith Ippolito. Cobb to Raise Water, Sewer Rates Cobb County will increase water and sewer rates annually for the next five years, following a 4-1 commission vote, with JoAnn Birrell dissenting. The average residential customer, using 5,000 gallons monthly, will see a $1.90 increase next year. Rate hikes start April 1, 2025, and continue each January through 2029, to cover rising costs and major wastewater projects. Chairwoman Lisa Cupid described the move as proactive, preventing larger future hikes. Historically, the county has adjusted water rates and revenue transfers to the general fund, with a plan to reduce the transfer rate from 10% to 5%. Last year, 6% of water revenues were transferred, and rates rose 7.5%. This year, the transfer is 5%. Birrell criticized the practice of transferring funds while raising rates, arguing against increases when funds are diverted to the general fund. The officers responded to unclear coordinates from the 911 call, leading them to a residence where the dog ran toward them before being shot. The department is conducting an ongoing internal investigation and has not cleared the officers of wrongdoing. The chief stressed the importance of learning from the incident to prevent similar situations in the future. We’ll be back in a moment Break: Ingles Markets 1 STORY 6: Commissioners Question Cupid's Spending Requests Cobb Chairwoman Lisa Cupid has requested to allocate $200,000 from her contingency funds for communications consultants and policy analysts, sparking debate among board members. Cupid’s plan divides the funds into $100,000 for professional services, $25,000 for office activities, and $75,000 for programs and events. While the board approved a similar request last year, contracts were not finalized before the fiscal year ended. Republican Commissioner JoAnn Birrell and Democrat Monique Sheffield voiced concerns, with Birrell suggesting the funds should support special projects instead of consultants. Cupid defended the proposal, emphasizing its importance for improving policy vetting and community communication. The board will vote on the request at today’s meeting. STORY 7: Bomb Threat At Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's Home Leads to Fatal Wreck A Rome police officer was involved in a fatal car crash while responding to a bomb threat at U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s home. Cobb School Board GOP Majority Rejects Call for Gun Safety, School Meal Programs In a recent Cobb School Board meeting, Democrat Becky Sayler proposed several amendments to the 2025 legislative priority list, focusing on school meal programs, gun laws, and increased counselor allotments. Despite support from fellow Democrat Leroy Tre' Hutchins, all motions failed. Only the proposal for more school counselors received cross-party support from Republican Brad Wheeler, but it was defeated in a 3-3 tie due to Democrat Nichelle Davis's absence. Sayler emphasized the importance of giving board members the opportunity to vote on these issues. Republican Board Chair Randy Scamihorn opposed the amendments, citing trust in district staff to prioritize necessary legislative actions and concern over lengthy priority lists being ignored by state legislators. Ultimately, the board unanimously approved a legislative priority list centered on financial sustainability, educational access, and safety and stability. The funds include $700,000 donated to specific nonprofits and $108,000 for the match pool, which will proportionally match the nonprofits’ earnings up to 10%. Significant contributors, including Walton Communities and several businesses, helped expand the match pool goal from $50,000 to over $100,000. The participating nonprofits covered diverse areas like arts, education, health, housing, and public safety. The foundation plans to announce the results and match pool distribution soon. Prosecutors maintain Cox's alcohol consumption is central to the case, while the defense claimed unsafe intersection conditions contributed to the crash. Judge Kimberly Childs denied the defense's request to dismiss the DUI and vehicular homicide charges. Closing arguments are scheduled for today. From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Wednesday, December 4th and I'm Keith Ippolito. Cobb Police: Officer Shot Dog that Charged Him On Monday evening, a Cobb County police officer fatally shot a dog that charged at him, according to Sgt. Eric Smith of the Cobb Police Department. Around 8:40 p.m., two officers responded to a call near Macland Road, where a voice was heard shouting for help. The call, made from a 911-only cell phone, lacked further details, complicating follow-up efforts. The officers' investigation led them to a nearby residence. While speaking with the homeowners, their dogs exited the house. Despite attempts to restrain them, one dog ran toward the officers. Perceiving the dog's actions as a potential threat, the officer discharged his weapon, resulting in the dog's death. Sgt. Smith acknowledged the emotional impact of such incidents and confirmed that an internal review would be conducted to assess the situation. For more news about our community, visit mdjonline.com. Testimonies included those from responding officers, passengers in Cox's car, and a bystander. Officer Steven Oney testified about smelling alcohol on Cox, who admitted to drinking. The defense questioned the reliability of the officers' testimonies and the handling of evidence. Disputes arose over whether Pugh was in a crosswalk when struck. The defense also attempted to introduce evidence about post-crash safety improvements, which was disallowed. Witnesses from a party Cox attended earlier testified about his drinking, with none believing he was drunk. The trial is set to continue, with a potential break for Thanksgiving.
