Description

This podcast is intended for students in and alumni of the School of Counseling program at Colorado Christian University, and is designed to supplement your coursework as well as your interaction with faculty, staff, and your peers as you progress through the program. Our hope in this podcast is to help you on your own spiritual journey as you navigate your own life with God throughout these coming years in the counseling program while you are training to become, as CCU President Hogue has said, “competent, courageous, and convicted” counselor.

Throughout this podcast, we will be discussing topics related to Christian spirituality and Christian integration, the intersection of counseling psychology and Christian theology and Biblical worldview. You will have opportunity to hear from the faculty and staff at CCU, as well as other experts in the counseling world, as we offer some of our stories and wisdom from our work within the mental health counseling field, as well as share about our own journeys with God along the way – our fumbles and foibles, as well as our service and successes, and the gracious fathering of God as we stumble after Him.

We are a community of professionals, seeking to offer competent, ethical, and informed counseling to our communities. We are also a community of believers, of followers after the God who has inaugurated His Kingdom through the coming, the death, the resurrection, and the promised return of the Lord Jesus Christ. Empowered by His Spirit, we seek together to walk with Him in our profession and our respective roles in offering Spirit-led, Christ-anchored, and character-driven help to those we serve.
This is the heart behind our efforts here in this Podcast, to invite you, dear listener, to sit at the table with us as we explore our work in the light of Christ’s work on our behalf.

Dr. Wichterman and Dr. Cline launch us into the Deeper Dive series of the Masters in Making podcast. In the Deeper Dive series, we take a more clinical focus in our conversation. What's it like to work with clients? What are things to look for and look out for, to expect and to structure to help make the experience successful for both client and student? The professors give their hopes and recommendations for CCU School of Counseling students who are beginning to see clients for the first time. Students in all stages of the counseling program will find the client stories shared in this episode to be helpful and encouraging as they grow both in their walk with Christ and in their clinical competencies. Dr. Crystal Brashear and Dr. Joshua Kreimeyer discuss the way in which God redeems, restores, and trains us not merely for our own sake, but also for the sake of others. His entire redemptive enterprise is based on Jesus’ finished work, the life of the Spirit of Christ abiding in the people of His bride, and Christ’s promised return. We are the hands and feet of Jesus to a broken and hurting world.  As counselors and therapists, we stand at an incredibly sacred juncture to be able to address the aches and anguish of people God brings to us. In this episode, Dr. Brian Fidler discusses with Dr. Nancy Thomas and Dr. Melissa Hall the personal spiritual disciplines. These are those spiritual practices we engage in that can faciliate the process of growth, personally as well as professionally. We want to be intentional about our own spiritual development, which has a profound impact on our work with clients.  The Scriptures say “until Christ is formed in you,” indicating an ongoing process of formation, of becoming. This is an exceptionally relevant area for us in the counseling profession, both in working with our clients as well as in our own character development. Counseling ethics and accrediting bodies look for the counselor to have a level of character quality and growth. In this episode, Dr. Selin Philip and Dr. Joshua Kreimeyer consider how we develop a holistic spirituality, where God reaches us where we are in our world and personality and also draws us, in the words of C.S. Lewis, “further up and further in” to life with God, growth in Christlikeness, and engagement in the Kingdom mission of Jesus. This will involve understanding and embracing those aspects of self that we are inclined toward and feel are a more natural fit for us, but will also entail moving with the Lord into growth and development of other parts of our spiritual and personal lives.
