In this episode, fitness entrepreneur and yoga instructor Marissa Walch shares her transformative journey into running and marathon training. Initially, Marissa's relationship with running was driven by a desire to maintain weight and burn calories, compounded by negative experiences with timed runs in sports. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, she discovered a newfound appreciation for running through the Peloton app, drawing inspiration from professional runners. Marissa's decision to train for a half marathon marked a turning point, as she found joy in the process and the support of friends who were marathoners and triathletes. Overcoming her fears of being left behind or not finishing, Marissa embraced the joy and freedom of running. Throughout her marathon training, Marissa learned valuable lessons, such as the importance of running at her own pace and resisting the urge to compare herself to others. She also discusses the mental challenges and the difficulty of transitioning back to her regular fitness routine after completing the marathon. Today we’re talking about diversity in our sport with Philly Race Director, Running USA Board Member, and owner of All Fitness Events, Kathleen Titus. Kathleen and I met last May at the Buffalo Marathon and remained in touch bonding over a passion for running and how to make a difference in the community. I invited her on the show as a friend and someone I admire and respect, but I had no idea we’d dive into this topic of inclusion in our sport and how leaders like her are working to ensure everyone feels represented at our races. As the city that loves you back, it’s no wonder Kathleen was chosen as race director for the Philly marathon.  She is all about returning the love she feels for this sport and our athletes. I can’t wait to share her with you! Please not that we will be covering the topic of transgender athletes in sport and there have been a few developments to this rapidly evolving topic since we recorded…including the World Athletics ban on transgender women from competing in female world ranking events  that goes into effect today March, 31st. Today, March 31st, is also International Transgender Day of Visibility. And while there is still much to learn when it comes to understanding the conflicting needs and rights between different groups, I believe everyone deserves to feel like they belong in our community and am honored to be connected with people like Kathleen who are dedicated to being a voice that inspires change for the benefit of those who need to be seen.
