It's time for Peche & Pals! The UC Engage art style is often a bit off-putting to us, but we're always here for tinkering with existing designs to make new ones. Riffing on designs is one of the great joys of being a mecha fan, if you ask me. But how wild to go is always a question you've gotta keep in mind. These machines? Not too wild.

Shuttles, shuttles, shuttles. Oh, sure, we do some cleanup, and some Kelvinverse designs, but mostly this episode is dedicated to little boxes for like two to twenty people. It's a bit of a break to our format, because we usually don't give machines with the same design new entries just because they have a new name. But c'mon, live a little.

C'mon. He's just a little mecha! Also it's his birthday, he's a little birthday mecha! The Stuka/Goblin fills a niche I didn't realize I needed: short, chunky mobile suit. What IF a Zaku only came up to the Gundam's chest? What IF you could barely see their legs from all that waist skirt? Kazuhisa Kondo remains an underappreciated genius of Gundam design.

Sometimes even Gundam Crossbone has good ideas. And they may not be good ideas leading up to them, or even following them. But for one shining moment, you get a cartridge-powered pile bunker leg driving a massive beam saber down, and everything is ok. ...Ok, that's unfair to the F89, that thing's fine. But boy. Anchor V2, V3, V4... it definitely goes downhill. Lighting can strike twice. But it usually doesn't.

I guess I would describe the Radiant Wave Surger as having both "the power" and "the touch." And it certainly gets "ready for battle." But can it "beat the Black Knight" if it itself IS a Black Knight? Y'know, stupid question. On two fronts. First of all, of course a person can always defeat themselves. Second, why am I doing an extended bit about the theme of the pinball machine Black Knight 2000?

Now, listen. It would not be entirely unfair to call me a weeb. I don't like the term, but y'know, lord knows I enjoy plenty of Japanese media. But that's kinda it, right? And Japanese food, that's good too. But I'm not out here obsessing over the code of bushido like SOME Americans. I wouldn't want to name names. It could be ANYONE under Mr. Bushido's mask. I can't be sure. But I suspect that some BLOND AMERICAN MEN have a lot to be ashamed of.

There's no identity crisis to be had here, because this show has long since extended its reach past just mecha... but these machines don't have pilots! They are remote controlled though, which is certainly a kind of piloting. It's a pedantic distinction, but it can be fun to consider how the categorization works out. The machines of Robot Alchemic Drive seem a-okay to me. A real shame the Gllang apparently sucks, it's sick.
I did a bad job of giving credit on the ep- this was a request from listener Baavetti! Thank you so much for the request!

Oh, those early episodes where our methodology was woefully incomplete. Yes, we left a bit of a mess back then. Mentioning the base Reginlaze then nothing else! Foolish. But fortunately we can rectify that mistake today.

We made a promise four years ago. ...Well, to be honest, it was more a proposal than a promise. I didn't exactly feel oathbound. Which to me makes this more important. We weren't bound by obligation. We just really wanted to have Grant (mynameisgrant.bsky.social) back on the show, and talk about the meat mecha of the Aura Road. And y'know? I'm so glad we did.

"Neofalia," you see, is the name of the research institute where this machine (and others) are built. And it's called "Tyrant" because it issues orders to machines that follow its commands, its "Slaves." And it's called "Sword" both because it has a sword, but also in the sort of grand metaphorical sense where you might refer to any instrument of violence, sapient or not, as your "sword." And they use "of" because... actually hang on, you probably knew that one. If not the others as well. Can you tell I didn't have a good idea for show notes?

In my memory, when I think about Gundam 00, I forget the Ahead ever happened. It papers over everything with GN-XIIIs and Ga-family machines. Now, this is both fair and unfair. The fair part is, the Ahead sucks. It's dumb and bad. The unfair part is, almost no design ENTIRELY sucks. It still has some cool elements, not to mention cool variants.

More than it needs women, Mars needs tanks. And honestly? The Mars Tank ISN'T one. It's a cool machine, and a name that captures the imagination. But it's not a TANK. It's a robot that can pick stuff up. And frankly can't even do that very well! But, y'know... be careful who you make fun of in high school.

It's extremely NOT the G-First. It's not the G-Last, I guess. There will be more Gs. But clocking in at UC 0096, this machine is far into the history of the Gundam. The legend, if you will.
It's also not the G-Best. But it's not too bad.

Since we're doing our second IBO design in a row, let me just say... I really don't think the IBO Gekko movie is ever coming out. Or Iron-Blooded Orphans G or however they brand it. It's an adaptation of a failed game, coming from Sunrise (well, Bandai Namco filmworks, but let's not get pedantic), a production company that can't ship an anime to save its life. Literally, it can't. If the company was gonna run out of money tomorrow they would just have to accept it because they don't know how to make anime anymore.
Hathaway 2? Yeah, that'll happen. The first did very well and its sequel is eagerly anticipated. But this show based on a game that seems like it kinda sucked? I imagine that's just gonna fade into the background.

I've ignored this design for ages. At first blush (ha cuz it's pink), it really doesn't seem like anything special to me. But a closer examination reveals that this is actually a pretty awesome design, with a lot of cool stuff! And then there's the Hajiroboshi, which, sorry, I think I was pretty much right about. It's not bad! It's just... unremarkable, given its peers. What if an IBO gundam was pink and had no cool gimmicks. Ok. Put the Marchosias back on screen, please!

We should have never let Akutsu do the Castor & Pollux. I can't say for certain that that's where it all began- I haven't done my homework like that. But it just makes sense. He did those two-faced robots, those Janus-headed little jerks, and it just gave him a taste for reversible two-identitied designs that... I'm sorry, they're bad! There are some things to like about the Mirage Frame, but the two-faced elements just make it kinda crap. The Blazing, though! The Blazing rules.

I wish to rescind my earlier statement about Team Trinity: you do not, under any circumstances, "gotta hand it to them." Can you IMAGINE how annoying it would be to fight the Drei? Or rather, to fight whoever the Drei is with. The Drei itself, not a big deal. If you'll forgive me for that. But having all your sensors jammed... I needed those!
