HIT OR MISS: WHO TREK A Star Trek and a Doctor Who Podcast celebrating every visual part of the franchises, from 1963 to the present day. Honest but respectful reviews, episode discussions, general chat & interviews.
SILVER SCREEN Film reviews and analysis from Film Studies BA graduate Michael Wilson, his knowledgeable but enigmatic co-host D.K and a host of fellow cinephile guests. In 60-90 minutes they'll review and analyse new releases, classics, guilty pleasures and films they love, hate, or love to hate.
214 Episodes

Series 7, Episode 9 - "He just needs to grow up. I feel like he's being a huge baby." It’s the final mission (for now) of Hit or Miss: Star Trek as we continue our Bajoran/Cardassian arc and wrap up the much-heralded (by us at least) “Ro Laren Trilogy.” This time Admiral Mike (temporary promotion to match Picard) is back in the hosting captain’s chair for a deep-dive into Star Trek: Picard season three’s “Imposters.” The “Ro Squadron” is finally at full strength: Jordan has been safely retrieved from the Bajoran Wormhole after going missing last week and reunites with Mike and Rune, with additional backup this week from special guest Justin Avery Smith. Together we beam into a packed episode starting with Justin’s favourite Bajoran/Cardassian picks and quickfire thoughts on Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy. From there it’s into the Hit or Miss gauntlet—where we debate an epic finale, a quirky fake ship, a slick new vessel, and a couple of familiar DS9 faces—before plunging into the review proper. Expect spirited debate on Ro’s shocking return and tragic (possible) end, her unfinished business with Picard, and how this arc ties all the way back to her TNG exit. Add in analysis of the new and returning cast, acting highs (and lows), and season three’s wider story, and you’ve got one heck of a shuttle ride. As always, we wrap with audience thoughts, closing verdicts, and final scores—because in Starfleet, every mission deserves a good debrief. Join us for this epic analysis, because while shore leave awaits, the Hit or Miss crew will return very soon with one last bit of business to conclude this series arc. D.K's Cult Classics Episode 39 - "Perhaps some of those familiar faces of yesteryear are absent this evening because they thought our beloved Miss Lynch might have one of her famous English finals awaiting us. I was only joking." This month’s Silver Screen Cult Classics review will arrive a little later than usual, but we’ve got a fantastic surprise to tide you over. Ahead of our big review of Grease, D.K sat down with Eddie Deezen — aka Eugene from Rydell High! With memorable turns in WarGames, Critters 2, 1941, Teenage Exorcist, The Polar Express and more, plus a prolific voice acting career, Eddie’s had one of Hollywood’s most fascinating journeys. Series 7, Episode 8 - "That's so on the nose somebody's picking snots out of it!" Hit or Miss: Star Trek boldly continues our season-long mission into the tangled politics of Cardassians and Bajorans — and this week, we enter the second instalment of our “Ro Laren Trilogy.” The plan was to reunite the full crew from our Ensign Ro review, but fate (or a pesky temporal eddy) left Jordan stranded in another quadrant. That means it’s just Captain Mike at the helm with lone returning guest Rune in the First Officer’s chair, navigating our way through TNG’s Preemptive Strike. Before docking at the main review, we improvise our way through a lively Hit or Miss segment featuring a couple of big DS9 episodes and two iconic hero ships. Then it’s time to tackle our very mixed feelings on Preemptive Strike — from cliché plotting and lazy dialogue to sleepy performances and uncharacteristic behaviour. We dig into the behind-the-scenes drama, note the moments that actually worked, and give due credit to a few standout beats. We analyse Ro’s exit, the ongoing Maquis storyline, a surprisingly powerful emotional moment, and some good old-fashioned geekery over everything from space battles to matte paintings. We wrap things up with an audience response section (short but sweet), our favourite moments, final conclusions, and episode scoring. It’s an away mission full of highs, lows, and the occasional zinger that hits like a warp core breach — so tune in, and we promise not to leave you stranded in the Demilitarized Zone. Series 7, Episode 7 - "Well, Dukat wanted him to stroke something. I'm not sure it was his ego."Our ongoing journey through the turbulent legacy of the Cardassians and Bajorans continues, and this week we’re diving headfirst into the psychological maelstrom that is Deep Space Nine’s “Waltz.” Joining Captain Mike this week is our steadfast Acting First Officer and Queen of all things Cardassian, Lady Vean, alongside the triumphant return of our Sci-Fi Queen, Nita. Before we tackle the intense Sisko/Dukat drama, we warm up with our Hit or Miss segment — debating the merits (or otherwise) of a key Bajoran, a classic Cardassian, a Discovery-era starship, Voyager’s youngest crew member, and one of that series’ early outings. But the heart of the episode is our passionate review of Waltz, one of DS9’s most psychologically rich and dramatically daring instalments. We dig deep into Marc Alaimo’s towering performance, the gravitas of Avery Brooks, the precision of René Auberjonois’ direction, and a script that could give Shakespeare a run for his latinum. It's bold, brutal, brilliant — and our final score might just reach as high as Dukat’s delusions. So settle down with some perfectly seasoned soup, break bread with a sworn enemy or just enjoy this intense, opinionated and insightful podcast episode. Apologies for the slight audio popping in the first half of this episode. The source is unclear as it wasn't present during recording. Every effort has been made to minimise it as much as humanly possible. Series 7, Episode 6 - "Yes, of course you know I'm going to have an opinion." As our Cardassian/Bajoran series continues, we return to the Delta Quadrant for a powerful and deeply reflective discussion of Voyager’s “Nothing Human.” Captain Michael is joined once again by Lady Vean and John Adams — our Voyager away team from “Maneuvers” — for a conversation that begins lightly but quickly turns to weightier ground. After briefly touching on the first look at Starfleet Academy and our usual “Hit or Miss” segment (featuring obscure ships, characters, and a DS9 favourite), we dive into what may be one of our most serious and passionate discussions to date. This episode raises difficult questions — about medical ethics, informed consent, immoral experimentation, and disturbing historical parallels to the Holocaust and figures like Josef Mengele. These are not easy topics, and our debate reflects the complexity and discomfort they bring. While never heated, our conversation is honest, intense, and may be upsetting for some listeners. We want to be clear: the themes discussed are challenging, but we believe it is worthwhile to confront them and explore the episode’s intentions and implications with care. We also consider whether certain characters behave out of step, the strength of David Clennon’s performance, the directing, writing choices, and where it may fall short in terms of balance and execution. As always, we close with your comments, our personal highlights, and final ratings — but this time, perhaps with a little more to reflect on. This episode contains several incidents of very strong language, and detailed discussion about topics that some may find distressing. Viewer discretion is advised. Series 7, Episode 5 - "It is not linear." While Mike is away with Silver Screen, here's a classic deep dive worth revisiting… This week, we’re cracking open the vault for a very relevant rerun—one that ties neatly into our current explorations of Bajorans, Cardassians, and everything in between. Originally aired some time ago, this episode sees our fearless host joined by Rick Everson of the Ten Backward podcast for a wild ride through the Trek universe. Expect tangents aplenty, including musings on much-maligned Trek films, discount Data knock-offs, cosplay chaos, animated lower deckers, and questionable holodeck packing lists. And at the heart of it all: a detailed review of Deep Space Nine's game-changing pilot, "Emissary". We reflect on its cinematic scale, its powerful opening chapter for so many now-beloved characters, and its bold use of the wormhole aliens to confront grief, loss, and fate itself. A pivotal episode that sets the stage for everything that followed. Hopefully, you’ll give this episode a warmer welcome than Sisko gave Picard—after all, watching Emissary is a journey you were always destined to take. Cinema Classics Number 18 - "I don't like the way Teddy Roosevelt is looking at me." “Now listen here, Fella...” We’re back – and just in time to dodge crop dusters and scale national monuments! With the regular and planned line-ups scattered to the winds like Cary Grant’s suit in a cornfield, host Michael is joined by returning guest and emergency co-pilot Sandy Eavenson for a stylish sprint through Hitchcock’s high-wire classic, North by Northwest. Neither of us had ever seen this titanic thriller before – so come along as we unpack our first impressions of one of the most referenced films in Hollywood history. We dive into where this film fits in Hitch’s legendary career, how Cary Grant redefined cool (again), and the surprisingly bold performance by Eva Marie Saint that defies some expectations of the era. We explore the film’s iconic sequences, visual storytelling, the strengths and stumbles of the script, and why this might be the ultimate wrong-man thriller. This one’s all espionage, elegance, and existential train rides. So grab your matchbook, hop on the next train to Chicago, and remember: even if you’re not George Kaplan… you’ll still want to listen. D.K's Cult Classics Episode 38 - "Gentlemen... we're history." The only true wisdom consists of knowing you know nothing at all. Which is pretty apt for this crew. Yes, for this episode of Cult Classics we're taking a trip through the circuits of time. Series 7, Episode 4 - "I mean, aren't most angry women completely justified!?"Bajorans, Cardassians & one very complicated Ensign… Set phasers to opinionated as the latest Hit or Miss: Star Trek episode beams into your ears! Taking the conn once again is your ever-faithful host Captain Mike, joined this week by returning bridge crew members Jordan and Rune. We kick things off by running Rune through a late-but-thorough Starfleet interrogation — favourite characters, first contact with Trek, and everything in between. Then it’s warp speed into this week’s Hit or Miss segment, where we take aim at a mix of Deep Space Nine and Discovery episodes… plus a couple of starships that may or may not deserve to be scrapped for parts. Finally, we chart a course for the episode’s true destination: a deep dive into Star Trek: The Next Generation’s “Ensign Ro.” From Michelle Forbes’ scene-stealing debut to the raw introduction of the “Bajora” and their uncomfortably familiar plight, we explore the power of Trek to tackle real-world complexity through the prism of sci-fi. Expect talk of grey morality, Guinan wisdom, and some less-than-stellar behaviour from the Enterprise-D crew. Big themes, bold takes, and a fan-favourite episode that still hits hard — so clip in your Bajoran earring, pull up a Ten-Forward bar stool and join us.Links• Follow Jordan on BlueSky or An Archive Of Our Own (AO3) - @jordanlafordan• Follow Jordan on Mastodon - @Jordanlafordan or @jordanrhirsch• Follow Rune on BlueSky, Instagram or Tiktok - @runeactorFollow Mike and the podcast all over the internet via linktr.ee/mikespodsFollow Mike on Discord: MikeOfSteel#2913Host /Editor/Producer - Michael K. Series 7, Episode 3 - "I'm dropping names like crazy today. Somebody get a broom." This week, we’re heading to the Delta Quadrant and things are about to get Seska’d. In the latest Hit or Miss: Star Trek, we’re diving deep into the murky waters of Cardassian deception and Kazon coiffures as we review Voyager’s “Maneuvers”. Host Michael is joined once more by resident Cardassian correspondent Lady Vean and first-time Trek guest (but Silver Screen regular) John D. Adams—a true Renaissance man with a love of warp cores and war stories. We kick things off with John’s Trek origin tale, favourite episodes, and a few casual encounters with Trek legends. Then it’s into our Hit or Miss picks: a soft-hearted Cardassian (no, really), a stone-cold TOS banger, and twin starships with very familiar faces. Our main review covers it all—from a captain undermined to Seska weaponizing every eyebrow raise. Expect space battles, Starfleet ethics, Godfather vibes, Chakotay rage, and exactly how many seductive ways there are to whisper “yes, Maje.” It’s manipulative, messy, morally grey—just how we like our Cardassian stories. Apologies for the quality of Vean's audio volume in this episode. Every effort has been made to repair and boost the audio. It does improve slightly as the episode develops. Series 7, Episode 2 - "Nice, light topics that are nothing to worry about these days..." In the second instalment of our ongoing exploration of Cardassian and Bajoran stories across Star Trek, we turn our attention to one of Deep Space Nine’s most powerful and emotionally resonant hours: the acclaimed episode Duet. Returning to the mic is the ever-insightful Cardassian Queen herself, Vean, and joining the crew for the first time on this feed is Thomas Labanick—Trek podcast rookie, but no stranger to us thanks to his prior appearance on our Jurassic Park review over on the Silver Screen Podcast. We kick things off with Tommy’s Trek credentials: when he first beamed aboard the fandom, what series he vibes with most, and who earns a place on his personal Mount Trekmore. Then it's warp speed into the latest Hit or Miss segment, where we parse through DS9 and VOY two-parters, grieve a tragic character arc, and celebrate a surprisingly ancient newcomer to the canon. But the heart of the episode lies in our deep-dive review of Duet. We honour the recent passing of the incredible Harris Yulin, whose performance left an indelible mark on Trek history, and unpack our differing takes on Nana Visitor’s equally complex portrayal. Along the way we dig into the real-world parallels, discuss the bold writing choices, and reflect on how a cost-cutting bottle episode transformed into a searing, unforgettable piece of television. Warning: contains scenes of intense dialogue, heavy guilt, and podcast hosts just about maintaining emotional composure. Series 7, Episode 1 - "To paraphrase Mystery Science Theater 3000; "that's one butt ugly spaceship you got there"!" Welcome back to a brand-new series of Hit or Miss: Star Trek! This time, we’re shifting focus to two of Trek’s most complex and compelling races—linked by tragic history and unforgettable storytelling, whether together or apart: the Cardassians and the Bajorans. We’re kicking off with The Next Generation season 4 episode “The Wounded,” marking the very first appearance of the Cardassians. Captain Mike has his briefing notes ready and is prepped to lead this podcast away team. Sadly, First Officer D.K. has been reassigned and won't be returning, as he's off on a top secret mission (rumours involve an unstable wormhole, time travel and a lot of Saurian Brandy). But since this deep dive into Cardassians was a topic she definitely didn’t force—ahem, inspire—us to cover, we’re joined by the Cardassian Queen herself: Lady Vean! And she’s brought backup, introducing new recruit Natalie, a first-time guest with a top-notch Starfleet service record. We kick things off with Natalie’s Trek history and favourites before diving into the now surely legendary Hit or Miss section. Then it’s on to our main episode review, covering early Cardassian fashion blunders, haunting real-world allegory, brilliant performances, Picard’s diplomacy—and much more. So pour yourself a glass of kanar (however you pronounce it), and settle in for a mix of deep analysis and celebratory geek-out. Apologies for the minor technical glitches with Vean's connection. Rest assured we've edited her audio so that you will hopefully barely notice, and her subspace transceiver has already been repaired ready for the next episode. Cinema Classics Number 17 - "Live as one of them, Kal-El, but discover where your strength and power are needed. And always hold in your heart the pride of your special heritage." Welcome. We're taking you from the doomed planet Kryton to the wheat fields of Smallville and the big city of Metropolis for our latest deep dive into classic cinema magic. Mike-El and D.K. Olsen are joined by guest Super Sandy Eavenson for a soaring celebration of Superman: The Movie — the film that made us believe a man could fly and set the gold standard for superhero cinema. Host Michael shares his deep personal connection to this 1978 classic, as the team explores why Richard Donner’s focus on verisimilitude still matters, how Christopher Reeve gave us the definitive Superman and Clark Kent, and why Margot Kidder’s Lois Lane remains untouchable. Plus: Gene Hackman’s charmingly evil Lex Luthor, those unforgettable effects, and the mythic power of the Man of Steel’s story. Expect laughs, insight, reverence (with just a splash of irreverence), and a few surprises — from Brando’s surreal script demands to Sandy’s uncanny Hackman impression. Oh, and if you’ve ever wondered which British TV wine expert made a cameo as a Metropolis crook… D.K.’s got you covered. Come fly with us. No cheesy poems. We promise. Episode 118 - "Welcome... to Jurassic Park." “An adventure 65 million years in the making” – and for host Michael Wilson, a passion more than 30 years in the making. In this very special and deeply personal episode of the Silver Screen Podcast, Michael invites you back to where it all began — not for cinema, but for him. Jurassic Park wasn’t just another movie; it was the first film he ever saw on the big screen, and the one that left the biggest footprint (T-Rex-sized, naturally) on his heart. This is more than a review — it’s a celebration, a nostalgic journey, and an emotional tribute to the film that sparked a lifelong love of movies. Joining the expedition are some familiar and new faces: regular co-host and more reliable right-hand man than Dennis Nedry, D.K., returns to help guide the tour. Running a little late to the island but arriving just in time to avoid being eaten, Lady Vean (our own clever girl) joins the fray, alongside her good friend and first-time podcast guest, Thomas Labanick, who's nervously hoping to catch a glimpse of a T-Rex and not end up stuck in the toilet. Together, the group dives deep into the film’s unforgettable impact — not just on pop culture, but on their own lives. From the awe of childhood wonder to the goosebumps that never fade, they reminisce about first viewings, share behind-the-scenes trivia, and discuss what still makes this film such a towering achievement. They explore the ingredients that make Jurassic Park a genuine cinematic titan: sharp and efficient screenwriting, Spielberg’s masterful direction, John Williams’ haunting and iconic musical score, breathtaking cinematography, game-changing animatronics, cutting-edge CGI and a powerhouse cast that brought humanity to the spectacle. There’s laughter, reflection, a few misty-eyed moments, and an overwhelming sense of joy at revisiting a film that continues to inspire. As always, the episode wraps with the audience’s feedback, personal scores, and a final average that might just prove this one’s a dino-sized hit. So turn the lights off, don’t move a muscle, keep those fences electrified, and join us as we return to the island — and to a movie that still finds a way… to move us. Episode 117 - "They mostly come out at night... mostly." But this episode? It's coming at you right now. Strap in, marines! D.K. is leading the drop on this week's Silver Screen mission as we dive helmet-first into Aliens: Special Edition — James Cameron’s high-octane, heart-pounding, chest-bursting follow-up to Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror classic. Mike's along for the ride (Ripley-style), joined by Alien franchise veteran Sandy Eavenson and returning filmmaker/genre super-fan Michael Whaley. Together, this crack squad dissects the 1990 Special Edition — from why it's the definitive cut, to hearing James Cameron himself back that up. We talk legendary quotes, explosive action, cut scenes that deepen the lore, and yes… the Alien Queen made of bin bags. Expect behind-the-scenes drama, fun facts (like the tale of James Remar's exit), deep dives into themes of motherhood, militarism, and trauma (including the moment that gives Mike full-on cinematic PTSD). It's part film review, part field report from Hadley’s Hope. So grab your motion tracker, keep an eye on the vents, and don’t forget to check for crawl spaces. Episode 79 - "His hygiene habits probably aren't the best... he's just so personable. I'll put up with anyone." Hello again officers, and welcome back to 'Hit or Miss: Star Trek' podcast. We've been taking a back seat to let our favourite Time Lord take the spotlight (sadly that hasn't exactly been a runaway success) but we've parked the TARDIS for now and we're back with Starfleet's finest, starting with another of our special full series review episodes. This was on the docket for a while but fate deemed it to be sadly all too timely as we are reviewing the recently officially cancelled Star Trek: Prodigy. Safe to say our intrepid crew aren't happy about that, but they are here to discuss the 40 episodes we got. (Holographic) Captain Mike is back in the host’s chair alongside loyal right-hand man D.K. They're joined by two great guests; returning legend Sci-Fi Queen Nita and first-time guest Connie. We start things off by getting to know new guest Connie, her intro to Trek and favourite Trek things. Then we get into everyone's first impressions of Prodigy, and how that might have changed now that the show has concluded. We examine how Prodigy serves as both a great intro to Star Trek as well as a great continuation of the lore and decide where it ranks in the Trek pantheon. We also dive into beloved characters, favourite storylines, best episodes and, of course, do a fair amount of drooling over starships. Proceedings conclude with your thoughts in our audience feedback section and our final thoughts on the dearly lamented show. Cinema Classics Number 16 - "I tell you, it's a whole different sex!" Nobody’s perfect… but this episode might come close! This week, Mike and D.K. don their best heels and grab their saxophones as they dive head-first into Billy Wilder’s genre-blending, gender-bending masterpiece Some Like It Hot. They’re joined by returning guest Robert Lunt and first-time classics commentators Michelle and Neil for a lively chat about the film’s riotous farce, surprisingly progressive attitude, and the unbeatable star power of Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon, plus surprise MVP (at least for two of our guests) Joe E. Brown. From train compartments to beach resorts, gangsters to cocktails, we break down iconic lines, timeless scenes, Cary Grant mockery, and the film's improbable magic trick of being both silly and smart. Plus: who delivers the best zinger, what’s the scene we still quote, and why that final line still brings the house down. Pour a Manhattan, slip into something fabulous, and join us as we ask: is Some Like It Hot as cool as its reputation? Series 1, Episode 8 - "Do I have the right?" Yes, you have the right to enjoy our last Who review for a while. This week on Hit or Miss: Doctor Who, we’re wrapping up our first batch of Dalek deep dives with a true sci-fi titan: Genesis of the Daleks! D.K. takes the wheel as host, but don’t panic—Mike’s still riding shotgun with his trusty sack of behind-the-scenes trivia. Joining them is first-time guest but long-time Whovian Phil Newman, who’s ready to help us tackle the best Genesis since Phil Collins. Before we get to Davros and his megalomaniacal skincare routine, D.K. puts Phil through a pre-show initiation to find out favourite Dalek stories, top-tier Doctors, and other Whoniverse highlights. D.K has also prepared a Hit or Miss segment featuring a nearly-but-not-quite companion, a less-beloved Dalek tale, and a Jodie Whittaker story that split the fanbase like Skaro on a bad day. Then it’s time for the big questions: morality, manipulation, Time Lord meddling, Davros' debut, Nazi parallels, ethical dilemmas, unforgettable moments, and yes… that giant clam. Is this the origin story to end all origin stories? Or does it just raise more uncomfortable questions about genetic experimentation and fashion goggles? We're on a little Doctor Who break after this one, so set coordinates, grab your time ring, and join us for one last hurrah (for now). We'll be back before you can say “Kaled mutations in a polycarbide shell!”. Should you stay tuned? Yes, you SHOULD do it!
