Ellen (a pseudonym) shares about shares about discrimination, growing up poor, living on a reservation, riding the line between native culture and "white people things" and tells her story of grooming and sexual abuse from her father, being "trapped" in her own bedroom for years to avoid him, and how getting sober herself was the catalyst for healing and forgiveness. She speaks about the open wounds that remain from generations of government mistreatment towards Native Americans and the stories of abuse, addiction, and violence that exist on native reservations today; and the need for healing and reconciliation for the trauma of the past.  Support Our Sponsors! The talented stand-up comedian, podcaster (The Neighborhood Listen) and writer/actor (HBO’s Mr. Show, Bojack Horseman, Room 104, Comedy Bang Bang) talks about the role therapy played in helping him turn his pain and rejection into being a happier person and a better artist.  He opens up about the shame of having parents who didn’t find him funny or necessarily interesting, and the beauty of being given a second chance by a peer who was ready to write him off for his past bitterness.  A bitterness fueled by unrequited, irrational love.   Holy shit, this sounds Shakespearean!  Originally aired in 2011. This podcast has literally saved my life while going through a huge depression. I binge this when ever I’m feeling alone and fantasize about what I would say if I was talking to Paul. This podcast has helped me understand my own problems and family problems and imagine the light at the end of my depression when going through it. I highly recommend it and want to send a virtual hug to anyone suffering from mental health problems.

Omg!!! Look up boys town! My jaw dropped when she said that. Thank you for having an native on. It's so heartbreaking. My dad is native and a second generation orphan. He never knew how to be a dad because he and both of his parents didn't... it's not an excuse but it helps to understand the word more and understand ones survival.

Huge trigger warning for food moralizing, body shaming and talk of people "eating themselves to death". Comparison of disordered eating (and eating at all) to a drug habit. Assertion that it would be better to be addicted to drugs than to be fat. These are all incredibly unhealthy and untrue opinions bolstered by the diet industry, medical fatphobia and body shame but are presented as fact and can be incredibly damaging to hear. So disappointed to hear it in a podcast i love so dearly.

being from Mississippi, and being very familiar with the southern accent, LeAnns voice is so comforting to me. i also grew up in an area where every person that lived on that street was family. it was a very large plot of land with a dirt road that made a big circle and was named "Hilltop." and there was no speaking of feelings where I grew up either. so, not that I would ever do something like talk to someone about my feelings or a problem I'm dealing with, that would be crazy, LeAnn has a voice that I would want to hear in return to whatever I would be bitching about.

I didn't receive out of this, what I had hoped for 😔 more on how the body changes, unlike the mind and what we are able to do and who we are when we look in the mirror

I'm an ER nurse and I thought I'd clarify a few things. 1. You can transfer the infection to different parts of your body if you touched the infected area. ALWAYS wash your hands after using the restroom or any other contact. 2. HSV is similar to shingles and chicken pox in that it lives in the nerve endings in the effected area. One way to think of HSV in a less negative light that I have told myvpatients when they are diagnosed or having an outbreak is that shingles is the dormant form of chicken pox. If you have had chicken pox, you have a pretty good chance of having a shingles out break. The lesions are very similar, just in a different part of your body (the trunk). Are people that have had chicken pox dirty? No. It just so happens that this type of herpes virus is exclusive to the mucus membranes and genital area and only spread through contact there. I have a number of friends who have SEVERELY struggled, to the point of a suicide attept in one case, with this and I do my best to try and change the stigma and people's perception about it. Hope this helps someone out there 😊

I wish she touched more on "relationship OCD" - I live with this destructive OCD. I have yet to figure out a way to fight it often destroying relationships and my own happiness. I have created compulsions just to see if I can get through a relationship... lets just say, its ruining love in my life. until now...I haven't heard someone describe my life word for word. "fear of them not being the one" (therefore, end or avoid commitments) thanks for the great episode
