427 Best Of: Adoption & Religious Abuse - Julie J
Funny and vulnerable, Julie was born to a drug-addict teenage mom, was given up for adoption and raised by a stoic military dad and Fundamentalist mom whose obsession with demons comes close to resembling the mother from “Carrie”.  From 2013 I forgot to mention it in the episode but the monthly-donor raffle for this cutting board is thru Wed Mar 27th.  Donors get one guess per $5/month donation.  So a $10 donor would get two guesses etc.  I have chosen a number between 1 and 500 and the person who guesses closest will win the cutting board (and shipped to them).   Support Our Sponsors!  This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp online counseling.  To get a free week go to www.BetterHelp.com/mental  Must be 18.  This episode is sponsored by MadisonReed home hair color kits.  To get 10% off your first one plus free shipping go to www.Madison-Reed.com and use offer code MENTAL   Other Links Mentioned  www.Patreon.com/mentalpod   WAYS TO HELP THE PODCAST ______________________ Subscribe via iTunes and leave a review.  It costs nothing. https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/mental-illness-happy-hour/id427377900?mt=2 ————————————————————————— Spread the word via social media.   It costs nothing. I'm an ER nurse and I thought I'd clarify a few things. 1. You can transfer the infection to different parts of your body if you touched the infected area. ALWAYS wash your hands after using the restroom or any other contact. 2. HSV is similar to shingles and chicken pox in that it lives in the nerve endings in the effected area. One way to think of HSV in a less negative light that I have told myvpatients when they are diagnosed or having an outbreak is that shingles is the dormant form of chicken pox. If you have had chicken pox, you have a pretty good chance of having a shingles out break. The lesions are very similar, just in a different part of your body (the trunk). Are people that have had chicken pox dirty? No. It just so happens that this type of herpes virus is exclusive to the mucus membranes and genital area and only spread through contact there. I have a number of friends who have SEVERELY struggled, to the point of a suicide attept in one case, with this and I do my best to try and change the stigma and people's perception about it. Hope this helps someone out there 😊

I wish she touched more on "relationship OCD" - I live with this destructive OCD. I have yet to figure out a way to fight it often destroying relationships and my own happiness. I have created compulsions just to see if I can get through a relationship... lets just say, its ruining love in my life. until now...I haven't heard someone describe my life word for word. "fear of them not being the one" (therefore, end or avoid commitments) thanks for the great episode

hi Paul. I much appreciate your show, BUT... , i think maybe the shows, interview's, maybe have getting a little soft lately. I, along with many others, struggle with drug addiction. It seems like its been a while since their have been consistently dramatic, and seriously troubled guests on the show. Consistently the show's have become a bit soft and lighter hearted then in previous years. this isn't "dinner and a movie" this is about, or at least was in the past more about the show's title. The way it is lately more presented is a "im ok, your ok" fluff piece. I hope you, and soon, bring more interviews with people like me, people still deeply imeresd in their particular sickness. mine, being a former responsible, productive member of society. A huge contrast to my last 15 years of experiencing the highs and lows of a active junkie, with a true and predictable ever downward trend. thank you,. troy

Paul- thanks for this. my mom was my primary abuser and i need to hear others talking about how abusive behavior does not relate to gender identity. i later got into abusive romantic relationships, some straight and one same sex. my worst was a woman and it took an order of protection and police to keep her away although she stalked me Anyway. it's not only men. I'm free and happy with a new, authentic love. thanks for this podcast.
