"I'm giddie!" - Matt Mentele
"A Classic 70's song" - Betsy Hayes
Another song of the day and if you don't know it, you better listen up quick. First #1 single as a solo artist from Justin Timberlake and grammy winner of the best dance recording category. "Best dance recording is a grammy category?" - Betsy Hayes. Possibly overplayed but there's no doubt that "this song effing kicks ass" - Matt Mentele. Whether you love it or hate it, do yourself a favor and put it on for old times sake and #GoHaveADance
Catergory is: Indie-Tronica? Today we have a 2009 hit from the band Passion Pit. "Ten years ago!!!" - Matt Mentele. This song has Passion Pit's signature electronic/pop upbeat energy, & is good for just about anything. "Might not be on my wedding playlist" - Betsy Hayes. #GoHaveADance
Possibly the reason for Betsy’s first car crash, the 2008 hit song “Freeze” is today’s nomination Friday song of the day. “I think of auto-tune, I think of t-pain” - Matt Mentele. This song is great for dancing, you know what it is within the first 5 seconds, and it is a great way to start your weekend. Happy Friday and #GoHaveADance with T-Pain! Don’t forget to subscribe to our Spotify playlist.
The song of the day, Trash. Not an insult, that’s the name. Today’s song of the day by the New York Dolls which, according to the band’s pandora profile: “The New York Dolls created punk rock before there was a term for it.” Produced by Todd Rundgren of “bang on the drum all day” this song is perfect for a punk-rock kind of night but not perfect for everyone. “Not your cup of tea but you don’t viscerally hate it?” - Matt to Betsy #GoHaveADance
“This one’s a good one” - Betsy Hayes.
If you like The Rolling Stones or Bob Dylan, you’ll like Ezra Furman & The Harpoons. A band that our own Matt Mentele has worked with in the past, comes in hot with 2008 hit Take Off Your Sunglasses. Heavy harmonica mixed with mumble lyrics and a “live band jammy” vibe this song is great for road tripping or just keeping a party in good vibes. #GoHaveADance and find Ezra Furman performing at The Teragram Ballroom Saturday May 4th.
Off the 2016 mixtape Coloring Book, we have All Night by Chance The Rapper as today’s song of the day. A song so awesome it’s a party within itself, great for the car, great for the the gym, “it definitely checks all the boxes” - Matt Mentele. Another song that Betsy was upset she didn’t know, and the only criticism is that it’s too short. “I’ll just put it on repeat” - Betsy Hayes. So turn up on this Monday morning and #GoHaveADance
Hello one & all to this episode of the Mentele & The Hayes podcast. Another night out on the town, #2 of this second season & Betsy is already forgetting the new grading system. On a rainy Monday night in Los Angeles Matt & Betsy ventured downtown to the LA Live & surrounding areas. Starting the night off at a historic Los Angeles landmark, a place that claims to never have close since it’s opening in 1924, we have The Original Pantry Cafe. “If you’re a diner & you don’t serve breakfast all day, just close.” Next on the tour of downtown was a bar that is best described as “a punk bar without the punk rock attitude” the Slippery Clutch. Then rounding out the night with a little Honky Tonk at (according to Google) a handsome destination for craft beer served in refined, dark-wood-heavy, vintage surrounds, plus DJs, The Monty Bar. Was this a successful night out? Is an old fashioned better when it’s premade? Does the rain actually make Los Angelians melt like the wicked witch of the west? Tune in to find out.
For the second day in a row we have relatively undiscovered music. The artist: Jake Bugg. The song: Lightning Bolt. Upon first listen you may be wondering, “is this Bob Dylan?” No. I've just told you. It’s Jake Bugg. A mere 18 years old and from across the pond, this 2012 song gained recognition thanks to its prominent lyrics about a lightning bolt (go figure) including a Gatorade commercial and Usain Bolt’s Olympic theme song. So hope on over to the Mentele & The Hayes Party Playlist and you’ll be “kicking that knee” to this bouncy hybrid of rock & country.
Time for the song of the day folks! Today we have a lesser known band, but no less killer, Electric Six with their 2003 hit “Gay Bar”. This band, originally from Detroit, rose to fame in the same year as this song along with the help of Mr. Jack White. Described as “nonsensicle for the most part” - Matt Mentele & “Let’s go to a gay bar, let’s have the time of our lives” - Betsy Hayes. Don't worry, you'll learn the words in no time. So strap in and grab your strap on because Electric 6 has got something to put in you, this straight up banger. #GoHaveADance & like the Mentele & The Hayes Party Playlist on spotify.
Another episode of the Song Of The Day is here and if you don’t know this one, what are you doing? Off of the 2000 album Stankonia, we present: OutKast’s “Ms. Jackson”. Ranked #55 on Rolling Stone’s best of the decade, this song is “good for everything” - Matt Mentele. Are we tired of hearing it? Is OutKast overrated? Who is Erykah Badu? A few things to ponder as you turn up The Mentele & The Hayes Song Of The Day Party Playlist and #GoHaveADance to this classic banger. I am for real.
Get ready for the doo-wop of the decade, a song that “If aliens come down and ask us for one song to describe this genre. It would be this song.” - Matt Mentele. Number 314 on Rolling Stones greatest songs of all time, “This song is so fun.” - Betsy Hayes. The group was originally called “The Teenagers” and in true 50’s fashion they were fighting for rights over their music, and have had interchanging members all the way up to the year 2000. So please enjoy this classic motown jam and #GoHaveADance
Welcome today's Song Of The Day by Chicago's own OK Go 2006 hit song "Here It Goes Again". We all know and love the music video and this song is 100% a banger. "The song is so fun." - Betsy Hayes "I legitimately really like this song" - Matt Mentele Even if this song is not new to you, Matt & Betsy recommend that you give it another listen for old time's sake. Or watch the video again.  #GoHaveADance
Another day, another song. Today's song comes from the year 2000 record "Heartbreaker" by the artist Ryan Adams. An album named because [Adams] was being forced to come up with a name and he looked up and saw a Mariah Carey poster. Also featured in the opening of the movie "Old School" this song feels "like a first date at a country fair. It feels like if a movie took place that is the song that would be playing." - Betsy Hayes "I don't listen to country music but I listen to Ryan Adams." - Matt Mentele  Recommended for the lyric focused audience with a hankering for an introspective looking out the window movie montage sequence. Thank you again for listening and shout out to crazed Ryan Adams fan Chelsea Madson #GoHaveADance
Hailing all the way from England, today we have a song from the artist M.I.A. known for the hit "Paper Planes". Released in 2007 the song called "Boyz" is a "pure unadulterated amazing dance song" - Matt Mentele. If you have yet to hear this banger, you'll be upset that you didn't know it. "I'm upset that I didn't know it." - Betsy Hayes. Matt & Betsy declare this song catchy with a great hook & that women will definitely dance to it. #GoHaveADance
IT'S FRIDAYYY! Which means today's song is brought to you by *Betsy Nomination Friday* where Betsy Hayes picks a song to be considered for the dance party playlist. Kick off your weekend right with this 2016 weird techno funky song "Elevated" by Larry Ohh & Peter Piffen off the "Happy Camper" album. "I loved it immediately." - Betsy Hayes "I think it's solid" - Matt Mentele A bit of a hidden gem, and under the category of a Matt Mentele "Screeplin" song, this is one of a few from these artists but nonetheless is a great song to robot dance & marijuana sing to. #GoHaveADance
Does Kendrick Lamar have the highest approval rating in music right now? Matt & Betsy think so. Welcome to the Mentele & The Hayes Podcast with their newest segment *Song of the day*. Everyday Matt and Betsy will visit one song from Matt's legendary "DJ Scribble D" party playlist to discuss danceability, relevance to today, and whether or not it should remain on said playlist (hint: not all of them do). Today's song is Kendrick Lamar's HUMBLE. “I heard this at a low end theory night, the week it came out, I didn’t know what it was, the crowd lost their shit, everybody was dancing, and I was like who is this who is this? This is an amazing song.” - Matt Mentele #GoHaveADance
