From Hidden to High Profile with Vicki Wilson Sandra welcomes Vicki Wilson,  Vicki Admin Fairy, back to the Mic Drop Moments Podcast, almost 100 episodes after Vicki first shared her story in Episode 159. Since then, Vicki has grown her VA business, moved into small business mentoring and written several practical books sharing the knowledge she has gained through running her own business. The main focus of the conversation is Vicki’s forthcoming autobiographical book, Disability Is My Strength. Vicki explains that she wanted to challenge some of the negative narratives surrounding disability and show that disability does not have to define what someone can achieve. The book follows her story from childhood and school through employment, operations and her life and business today. A powerful theme throughout the conversation is “How can I?” rather than “I can’t.” Vicki talks about continually adapting, finding alternative ways to do things and refusing to allow her wheelchair to define her. Her electric wheelchair has been particularly transformational, giving her greater independence and the confidence to exhibit at events and move into speaking. Sandra shares her own perspective of living with a hidden disability through partial hearing loss, as well as her temporary experience of using a wheelchair after breaking her ankle. They discuss how easily people can make assumptions about disability and the importance of seeing and speaking to the person rather than the disability. Vicki hopes the book will speak to two audiences: encouraging disabled readers to recognise what may still be possible for them, while helping non-disabled readers challenge assumptions, communicate more openly and feel comfortable asking someone whether they need help rather than making decisions for them. About Vicki Wilson Vicki Wilson is the founder of Vicki Admin Fairy®, an author, speaker and small business mentor based near Oswestry in Shropshire. After spending 20 years working for HMRC, Vicki launched her own business in 2021 and has gone on to support small business owners with the admin that can so easily become overwhelming. Living with cerebral palsy and using a wheelchair, Vicki is passionate about challenging assumptions around disability and showing what can be possible when you focus on finding your own way forward. Before the launch, Vicki will be exhibiting at the Woman Who Live Solopreneur Awards on Friday 9 October, where she will also be sharing a special preview of Disability Is My Strength and revealing the book cover. Vicki is also planning a special launch event including a fireside chat, signed books and her specially created cocktail, “The Spirit of Vicki.” Vicki’s Mic Drop Moment “Never say you can’t. Always look for an alternative way of doing something. There’s always a way, and do it your way.” Or, as Sandra sums it up during the conversation: Do it the Vicki way.   Stop Reinventing Your Visibility: Build a Strategy That Works on Repeat Visibility often starts with a burst of activity. You post more, go networking, send an email, update your website, pitch yourself for a podcast and suddenly you're everywhere. Then client work gets busy, life takes over and it all stops. In this episode of Mic Drop Moments, Sandra looks at the difference between being busy with visibility and having a visibility strategy. She shares simple quick wins that can get you moving again without adding another huge list of tasks to your week. Sandra explores why reconnecting with existing contacts, telling people what you're doing, reusing content, collaborating with other audiences and having better conversations can create far more impact than constantly chasing something new. She also shares her simple approach to building visibility around your business goals: show up, notice what works, repeat it and amplify it. Rather than trying to be everywhere, Sandra encourages you to choose the places that matter, measure the conversations and opportunities that follow, and stop doing the things that aren't moving your business forward. Mic Drop Moment: You don't need to be visible everywhere. You need to be visible consistently, intentionally and in the places that move your business forward. The Biggest Opportunities Happen After You Leave the Stage What if the biggest opportunity from speaking has nothing to do with what happens while you are actually on the stage? Following her first Ideas Fest, where she co-hosted the Female Founders Unfiltered tent, Sandra reflects on what happens when the microphone goes down. Because speaking is not simply about audience numbers, immediate leads or whether someone buys from you there and then. The stage can be the catalyst for conversations and opportunities that appear weeks or even months later. Sandra shares how visibility creates a ripple effect, from the person who approaches you afterwards to the LinkedIn connection, podcast invitation, collaboration or recommendation that comes much later. She also explains why the right small audience can be more valuable than a huge room, and why being memorable matters more than cramming information into a presentation. The episode explores how to make speaking work harder for your business by thinking strategically about what happens before, during and after the event. From sharing your speaking appearance beforehand and staying for conversations afterwards, to following up with contacts and turning one talk into weeks of content, the opportunity extends far beyond your time on stage. Mic Drop Moment: The stage gives you visibility, but what you do before and after it turns that visibility into opportunity.   Connect with Sandra Sandra Garlick MBE is a Speaker Mentor, Visibility Strategist and Founder of Woman Who. What happens when you realise you're working incredibly hard, yet nobody can actually find you? In this episode of Mic Drop Moments, Sandra Garlick MBE is joined by Lisa Baker-Murray, a People and Leadership Development Expert who helps organisations transform dysfunctional teams into high-performing ones through leadership development, coaching and facilitation. Lisa shares the pivotal moment that changed everything. During a visibility exercise, she discovered that despite regularly posting on social media, she was virtually invisible online. That realisation sparked a complete shift in how she approached her personal brand, confidence and visibility. Together, Sandra and Lisa discuss why so many experts hide their expertise, how confidence grows through action rather than waiting until you 'feel ready', and why genuine relationships remain one of the most powerful business development strategies available. This is an honest conversation about stepping into your expertise, allowing yourself to be seen and refusing to let anyone dim your light. In this episode you'll discover: Why posting on social media doesn't automatically make you visible. How a visibility strategy transformed Lisa's confidence in just a few months. The connection between being seen and recognising your own expertise. Why relationship building will always outperform cold selling. How collaboration creates more opportunities than competition. The importance of celebrating your own achievements instead of hiding them. Why visibility is about being remembered for what you want to be known for. Lisa's powerful 'Mic Drop Moment' about resilience and facing life's challenges head-on. Memorable Quotes 'I decided I wasn't going to let anyone dim my light anymore.' 'I'm really good at what I do… so why am I hiding myself?' 'Relationships built over time create opportunities you could never manufacture through cold selling.' Lisa's Mic Drop Moment "No matter what the world throws at you, get back up, put your head to the wind and keep going. Every challenge teaches you something, and when you come out the other side, you'll realise just how much you've achieved."   Connect with Sandra Sandra Garlick MBE is a Speaker Mentor, Visibility Strategist and Founder of Woman Who. The Visibility Strategy That's Helped Me Stay in Business for 10 Years Why being seen isn't enough if you want to become known For years, I believed that visibility meant saying yes to everything. Every networking event. Every new social media platform. Every opportunity that came my way. Looking back, I wasn't building a visibility strategy. I was simply collecting visibility tactics. In this episode of Mic Drop Moments, I share some of the biggest lessons I've learned over the last twenty years in business. From building a Legal 500 employment law firm to creating Woman Who® and celebrating ten years in business, these are the mistakes that shaped my approach to visibility, reputation and becoming known. If you've ever wondered whether you're spreading yourself too thin, following every trend or feeling overwhelmed by the pressure to be everywhere, this episode will help you rethink your approach. In this episode, you'll discover: Why visibility isn't about being on every social media platform. The difference between being busy and being remembered. How networking strategically creates better opportunities than simply attending more events. Why copying what everyone else is doing can distract you from building the business you really want. How confidence is built through action, not before it. The one question that completely changed my approach to visibility. How I use a simple 90-day visibility strategy to stay focused and intentional. Key Takeaways Visibility should always support your business strategy, not distract from it. You don't need to be everywhere. You need to be in the right places, speaking to the right people. Being visible without a clear message rarely creates opportunities. Stop comparing your business to everyone else's. Build a strategy that's right for you. Confidence grows every time you take action. Focus on becoming known for something specific rather than trying to appeal to everyone. Every opportunity should have a purpose and move your business forward. Reflection Questions Before the next episode, take a few moments to reflect: What are you known for today? What do you want to become known for? Are your current visibility activities helping you become known for that? Mentioned in this Episode Behind the Mic: Celebrating My First 10 Years in Business If you enjoyed today's episode and would like to hear more of the personal stories behind my journey, I've created a special documentary-style series called Behind the Mic. I share the highs, the lows, the lessons learned and the experiences that shaped the last ten years of Woman Who.
