Description

Vincent Williams and Len Webb have started an amazing journey to watch and review every African-American film released in theaters. Their passion project, the Micheaux Mission, honors Oscar Micheaux, a trailblazing Black filmmaker. Their enthusiasm and dedication are truly inspiring as they seek the perfect wine to pair with Pam Grier’s Coffy, find five movies since 1985 that don't feature Samuel L. Jackson, and connect with other film fans who share Len’s view on The Last Dragon. Their commitment to celebrating and examining African-American cinema is both commendable and uplifting. Welcome to the Mission!

We remember Terrence Crawford vs. Canelo Alvarez. We go on a Vision Quest for some reason still unknown. One of us finds out about Robert Redford's passing. We examine the darkness of Happy Feet. And we have reviews (and lyrics) to go for A Tribe Called Quest and director Michael Rapaport. Please find us on PATREON patreon.com/micheauxmission Thank you for your support! Vincent and Len marvel at THE LIFE AND CRIMES OF DORIS PAYNE, an 80-year-old jewel thief on absolutely unrepentant glory. But first they partake in recasting of Sinners circa the 90s, suggested by a listener, and unveil a new feature dedicated to celebrating the under-celebrated Black actresses of yesterday and today - With/And - beginning with Fredi Washington, who lived anything but an Imitation of Life. Six Degrees of D'urville Martin connects the blaxploitation legend with Hollywood burglars Cary Grant and Michael Madsen. Crimson Tide (1995)

Crimson Tide (1995)

Len shares mini-reviews of the late-summer horror box-office hitWeapons and Eden, the most UN-Ron Howard film ever. Then the Men of Micheaux create a Black Acting Mount Rushmore (1980-present) before basking in the master class on display by Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman in director Tony Scott's political thriller Crimson Tide, featuring Quentin Tartino's toneless dialogue. Sugar Hill (1994)

2025-08-2201:46:28

The Men of Micheaux glide through a history of comedy dating back to the 40s just so they can fully unfurl their capes for Tisha Campbell and Tichina Arnold (again!), two underappreciated comedic geniuses waiting to be "discovered". Then a reflection on character actor Abe Vigoda brings them to their review of SUGAR HILL, a forgotten Wesley Snipes drama of the 90s with many influences but not much to say. Iron Eagle 2 (1988)

Iron Eagle 2 (1988)

2025-08-1401:42:44

The Men of Micheaux create a list of must-see Black films from 1980-2025 for visiting extraterrestrials and give fair consideration to the career choices of Louis Gossett Jr. in light of his jingoistic movie series "Iron Eagle". Nevertheless, as in mourning the loss of 70s child actor Danielle Spencer, Len and Vincent get stuck searching for the answer: "Who thought it was a good idea for Dee to date Dwayne on What's Happening Now?" The Final Comedown (1972)

The Final Comedown (1972)

2025-08-0701:21:31

The Men of Micheaux return to live podcasting to cape for what they've been watching lately, something a little old (King of The Hill, Homicide: Life On The Streets) and something new (Pantheon, King of The Hill?). Vincent gets lost wandering through the small sweatered lands of the Madea Cinematic Universe. And after Six Degrees of Billy Dee Williams, they go One Degree of D'Urville with their review of the still-relevant The Final Comedown. Little Man (2006)

Little Man (2006)

2025-07-2401:45:47

The Men of Micheaux remember rock legend Ozzy Osbourne and Malcolm-Jamal Warner's inspiring career, consider Quincy Jones's film scores, and share their thoughts on Fantastic Four: First Steps. Unfortunately, that leaves room for their review of Little Man, perhaps the smallest achievement in the Wayans Bros. filmography. Author and essayist Damon Young, a very smart brother whose latest book, That's How They Get You: An Unruly Anthology of Black American Humor, is available everywhere, participates in a special stop on the Mission to help highlight the most transformative Black films of the 20th and 21st centuries. He also discusses Black humor as seen in The Wayans Bros’ premiere film and comedian Eddie Griffin’s career masterpiece. Award-winning author and comic book writer David F Walker (Bitter Root, Naomi) joins us in the Summer of Comics to showcase his deep knowledge (and admiration) for 70s Blaxploitation cinema, especially the work of Richard Roundtree — John Shaft himself! Plus, we create an all-star writing room for some epic Black movies, Vincent and David both go Six Degrees of D'urville, and we tally up Shaft's Big Score. One Down, Two To Go (1982)

One Down, Two To Go (1982)

2025-07-0301:35:55

The Men of Micheaux say goodbye to Walter Scott of The Whispers while also wondering about the group's strange hold on the hearts of Philly. Vincent and Len went to the movies to see Jurassic World: Rebirth, and they have an opinion about what the film should have rebirthed. And after sharing their favorite Saturday morning cartoons (YAY!) and cereals (BUMMER!), the Men analyze what went wrong with writer-director Fred Williamson's 1982 attempt at a 1970s "cool Black flick." We greet comic book artist N. Steven Harris just in time to bid a fond farewell to music legend Sly Stone (1943-2025), respond to a bewildering email from “family” that takes a poke at director Antoine Fuqua for reasons TBD, and review the eccentric, quirky, yet prescient coming-of-age comedy by Rick Famuyiwa that kickstarted the careers of some of the Mission’s favorite actors. Recorded live at Butch and Coco's Cafe in Brooklyn, the men of Micheaux sit down with comic book creators Joe Illidge and N. Steven Harris for tasty wings, drinks, and engaging conversation while they review 1995's HIGHER LEARNING, writer/director John Singleton's drama thriller featuring Omar Epps, Ice Cube, and Tyra Banks. The Help (2011)

The Help (2011)

2025-05-2901:41:52

Listeners ask the Men of Micheaux about their favorite comfort-food albums and which directors they would gift a $100 million blank check for a movie. We also pay tribute to the passing of ‘70s-80s character actor James McEachin, connect D'Urville Martin to two distaff 'Davises,' and then Len unleashes Vincent for his completely uncensored deconstruction of Tate Taylor and Kathlyn Stockett's The Help, with tepid apologies to Viola "You is kind, you is smart, you is impo'tant" Davis. More hot takes on Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” When will we see the real Motown documentary? The best comedians who became actors. And literally anything else the Men of Micheaux can think of to discuss to delay reviewing this 2007 misfire by Cedric the Entertainer. Cedric the Entertainer is featured in this edition of Mission Logs as Vincent and Len explore the "boring" antics of the Johnson Family Vacation, a review from May 2020. The Men of Micheaux also pay tribute to the then-recent losses of music luminaries Andre Harrell, Betty Wright, and the one and only Little Richard. Radio (2003)

Len proves to bethe only person Vincent knows who actaully used the China in the china cabinet. A white missioary shares his word for breakfront. The Men of Micheaux struggle to reunite a living R&B group for one more great album. Len gives an undefinition for a Black film. And we wonder what were Debra Winger and Cuba Gooding Jr. thinking about her return and Radio’s “teeth”, respectively. The 1985 cutting-edge Cannon film with Mario Van Peebles and Kadeem Hardison - Rappin' - is (currently) the worst film The Men of Micheaux have reviewed on the Mission, and here's where they told you why.
