Description
Vincent Williams and Len Webb have started an amazing journey to watch and review every African-American film released in theaters. Their passion project, the Micheaux Mission, honors Oscar Micheaux, a trailblazing Black filmmaker. Their enthusiasm and dedication are truly inspiring as they seek the perfect wine to pair with Pam Grier’s Coffy, find five movies since 1985 that don't feature Samuel L. Jackson, and connect with other film fans who share Len’s view on The Last Dragon. Their commitment to celebrating and examining African-American cinema is both commendable and uplifting. Welcome to the Mission!

The Men of Micheaux welcome friend-fan-professional geek Ariell Johnson of Len’s Secret Movie Podcast with Ariell to share their favorite comic book writers and artists, reveal the secret (?) Jermaine Jackson diss track, play a game of “who is Sienna Miller?”, and review a sentimental, charming film that features Whoopi Goldberg at her best and finest.

The Men of Micheaux bid a fond farewell to reggae legend Jimmy Cliff (1944-2025) and question his and others’ place in music history, which steers into the legacy of the Jacksons, and a requiem of sorts for Randy Jackson. Who should sing a song of Thanksgiving? Six Degrees of Two 2009 indie pictures lead directly into this black & white debut from LaLa Land’s Damien Chazelle. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
The Men of Micheaux share their thoughts on Netflix’s Being Eddie documentary and what it says (and doesn’t say) about Eddie Murphy. Vincent goes Six Degrees to two of his favorite British actors - Naomie Harris and Sophie Okonedo. And then they review a 2023 movie that may be the greatest rom-com of all time (when the subtitles are on).

The Men of Micheaux remember when Muhammad Ali beat the brakes off of Superman, and a listener has an addendum for It’s a Black Black Black Black World. The Men also pitch a new Rewatch podcast for the culture. Vincent goes Six Degrees of D’urville to actors John Hurt and Rachel Weisz. And Barry Jenkins makes a hell of a debut in 2008’s Medicine For Melancholy.

The Men of Micheaux discover actor Sally Kirkland is doing well and making new movies. Len has a mini-review of Predator: Badlands. A listener throws catnip at one of the Men by asking them to Black-cast the 1963 classic "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World." Then a month of l'amour kicks off with a review of the 200o HBO adaptation of Terry McMillian's Disappearing Acts, featuring the incredible chemistry of Wesley Snipes and Sanaa Lathan and the knowing direction of Gina Prince-Bythewood.

Vincent teaches Len an important Halloween candy in time. Then Len reveals the Top Five of horrible Horror Mothers to Vincent. Vincent then tries to connect D'urville Martin to two legends from Len's collection of "Ol' Timey Actors" — David Niven and Joan Crawford. Finally, the Men of Micheaux relive the goofy, eerie lesson of Oscar winners Octavia Spencer and Alison Janney in 2019's Blumhouse cult sweetheart.

Artist/Podcaster Wi-Moto Nyoka (Black Women Are Scary) steps onto the Mission with memories of podcasts as intimate affairs for the ears, not the eyes. A listener asks for Len's reaction to The Last Dragon returning to theaters for its 40th-anniversary run, and Len responds. The Men of Micheaux and Wi-Moto share their ideas for original horror films of their own and then review the "werewolf drama" that's one part Brazil, one part France, one part Portuguese, and all parts intense.

The Mission remembers 21st-Century soul legend D’Angelo (and actress Diane Keaton), and Len makes Vincent think about 70s TV-film actress Sally Kirkland (The Sting, JFK) in Six Degrees— because somebody has to. Then, The Men share their thoughts on writer/director Anu Valia’s We Strangers, aka “Not A Horror Movie.”

Vincent and Len remember voice actress Kimberly Gregory, which leads to high praise for Craig of the Creek. Then, they debate which movie franchises should 'give it up' after they watch Tron: Ares. Then a listener challenges the hosts to recast the 80s Whoopi classic Jumpin' Jack Flash before connecting D'urville Martin to two legendary film monsters and reviewing the Frankenstein reimagining told from the perspective of a determined, intelligent, and angry Black girl.

Cartoonist Ben Passmore (BTTM FDRS) shares his moment of activation into anarchy and connects it to his new graphic novel, Black Arms To Hold You Up. That seamlessly leads into a review of the compelling 2017 documentary about life in Ferguson during the BLM movement. Vincent explores Six Degrees of separation within the career of 'the white guy in Enter The Dragon,' and Ben and The Men use Silver Convention's Fly Robin Fly to soundtrack a movie.

The Missionaries has Vincent and Len combing through the history of Black Teen actors in the 1980s and the origin of the Buddy-Cop genre (would you believe 1974?). They shower respect and flowers on the career of Lorriane Toussaint while questioning the legacy of Nell Carter. Vincent asks, "Who's Dean Jones?" Then, the Men of Micheaux are a couple of flies on the wall for director RaMell Ross's visual poem about small towns in Alabama.

We remember Terrence Crawford vs. Canelo Alvarez. We go on a Vision Quest for some reason still unknown. One of us finds out about Robert Redford's passing. We examine the darkness of Happy Feet. And we have reviews (and lyrics) to go for A Tribe Called Quest and director Michael Rapaport.

Vincent and Len marvel at THE LIFE AND CRIMES OF DORIS PAYNE, an 80-year-old jewel thief on absolutely unrepentant glory. But first they partake in recasting of Sinners circa the 90s, suggested by a listener, and unveil a new feature dedicated to celebrating the under-celebrated Black actresses of yesterday and today - With/And - beginning with Fredi Washington, who lived anything but an Imitation of Life. Six Degrees of D'urville Martin connects the blaxploitation legend with Hollywood burglars Cary Grant and Michael Madsen.

Len shares mini-reviews of the late-summer horror box-office hitWeapons and Eden, the most UN-Ron Howard film ever. Then the Men of Micheaux create a Black Acting Mount Rushmore (1980-present) before basking in the master class on display by Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman in director Tony Scott's political thriller Crimson Tide, featuring Quentin Tartino's toneless dialogue.

The Men of Micheaux glide through a history of comedy dating back to the 40s just so they can fully unfurl their capes for Tisha Campbell and Tichina Arnold (again!), two underappreciated comedic geniuses waiting to be "discovered". Then a reflection on character actor Abe Vigoda brings them to their review of SUGAR HILL, a forgotten Wesley Snipes drama of the 90s with many influences but not much to say.

The Men of Micheaux create a list of must-see Black films from 1980-2025 for visiting extraterrestrials and give fair consideration to the career choices of Louis Gossett Jr. in light of his jingoistic movie series "Iron Eagle". Nevertheless, as in mourning the loss of 70s child actor Danielle Spencer, Len and Vincent get stuck searching for the answer: "Who thought it was a good idea for Dee to date Dwayne on What's Happening Now?"

The Men of Micheaux return to live podcasting to cape for what they've been watching lately, something a little old (King of The Hill, Homicide: Life On The Streets) and something new (Pantheon, King of The Hill?). Vincent gets lost wandering through the small sweatered lands of the Madea Cinematic Universe. And after Six Degrees of Billy Dee Williams, they go One Degree of D'Urville with their review of the still-relevant The Final Comedown.

The Men of Micheaux remember rock legend Ozzy Osbourne and Malcolm-Jamal Warner's inspiring career, consider Quincy Jones's film scores, and share their thoughts on Fantastic Four: First Steps. Unfortunately, that leaves room for their review of Little Man, perhaps the smallest achievement in the Wayans Bros. filmography.

Author and essayist Damon Young, a very smart brother whose latest book, That's How They Get You: An Unruly Anthology of Black American Humor, is available everywhere, participates in a special stop on the Mission to help highlight the most transformative Black films of the 20th and 21st centuries. He also discusses Black humor as seen in The Wayans Bros’ premiere film and comedian Eddie Griffin’s career masterpiece.

Award-winning author and comic book writer David F Walker (Bitter Root, Naomi) joins us in the Summer of Comics to showcase his deep knowledge (and admiration) for 70s Blaxploitation cinema, especially the work of Richard Roundtree — John Shaft himself! Plus, we create an all-star writing room for some epic Black movies, Vincent and David both go Six Degrees of D'urville, and we tally up Shaft's Big Score.
