LANSING, MICH. — The Capital Region Community Foundation is delighted to announce the new Al and Jan Granger “Beacon of Hope Grant,” a $100,000 award to one nonprofit selected each year. The grant will be awarded annually, in perpetuity, thanks to an endowment fund established by the Grangers at the Community Foundation in celebration of their 70th wedding anniversary.
The Grangers created the Beacon of Hope Grant for select nonprofits that “uplift those facing adversity by offering practical solutions that restore hope and human dignity.” They established the endowment to ensure the annual grant would continue beyond their lifetimes as their legacy to the community and to their descendants.
Al and Jan Granger have generously but quietly supported the Greater Lansing community all their lives, and the Beacon of Hope Grant is a testament to their commitment to giving back. Said Jan, “We know there are other people who have been blessed like we have, and this is a mechanism for how you can share with others.” Al agreed, “We’d just as soon not be recognized, but if it inspires others to help those less fortunate, then so be it.”
In this inaugural year, the Grangers selected not one, but two outstanding recipients: The House of Promise and Habitat for Humanity Capital Region. Each will receive $100,000 to further their missions.
The House of Promise is a nonprofit dedicated to supporting survivors of human trafficking by offering them a safe space, comprehensive support, and the resources needed to rebuild their lives. "We are incredibly honored to receive the Beacon of Hope Grant from the Grangers," said Shari Montgomery, executive director of The House of Promise. "This support will make a significant impact in the lives of the survivors we serve, empowering them to move forward with hope and dignity."
Habitat for Humanity Capital Region focuses on providing affordable housing solutions to families in need, fostering strength, stability, and self-reliance. Brent Taylor, president & CEO of Habitat for Humanity Capital Region, said, "The Granger family has once again shown their commitment to our local communities through their generous support of the Habitat mission. Simply put, this grant means more of our neighbors will have a safe, secure place to call home."
For more information about the Beacon of Hope Grant or the Community Foundation, please visit ourcommunity.org or contact Cindy Hales at chales@ourcommunity.org.
The Community Foundation is passionate about creating vibrant, thriving communities throughout Michigan’s capital region. The Foundation serves donors to meet their unique charitable goals, supports area nonprofits with grants and coaching, and leads innovative projects that drive community growth. The Community Foundation (also known as the Capital Region Community Foundation) is a tax-exempt public charity whose mission is to lead philanthropic solutions that build vibrant communities in Ingham, Clinton and Eaton counties.

What does this expanded product reach mean for your company?

Women-led startup selected for ”Local Favorites” program.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., October 30, 2024 – Aurora International Foods, creator of high-quality, all-natural products at the intersection of Latin American flavors, culture, and convenience, today announced its Reyna’s Michelada Mix will be on shelves at 46 Meijer stores across Metro Detroit. The original flavor of Reyna’s Michelada Mix will be available at these new locations beginning this month.
Through the new “Local Favorites” program, Meijer brings small, local businesses to the forefront, or in this case, the aisle endcap! Reyna’s Michelada Mix, the creation of Reyna Oréllana Masko, an immigrant from El Salvador, was selected to join several other culturally significant local businesses in this initiative.
“My mother, Aurora, and my work within the Hispanic communities have taught me the power that food has to bring people together,” said Reyna Oréllana Masko, owner and CEO of Aurora International Foods. “This opportunity allows me to reach an expanded audience from our base in Grand Haven, and draw people into the enchantment of Latin American flavors. It’s an honor to be on the shelves alongside other Michigan-based food businesses this holiday season.”
The original flavor of Reyna’s Michelada Mix will be available at 46 Meijer stores in Southeast Michigan beginning this month.
Partnering with local and national suppliers, both large and small, allows the retailer to have a broad product offering that meets customers’ needs.
“I admire the commitment to inclusion at Meijer, and how hard they work to make their stores reflect the communities they serve, urging customers to see themselves, their friends, their family, and their neighbors represented on shelves,” added Masko.
Visit auroraintlfoods.com/products/ for more information on store locations in Metro Detroit.

Chris Holman welcomes Tom Kelly, President & CEO, Automation Alley, Troy, MI.
Chris had several things he wanted to catch up on with Tom:
Q. Before we get started, can you remind our listeners what Project DIAMOnD is?
Project DIAMOnD –which stands for distributed, independent, agile manufacturing on demand – is an initiative powered by Automation Alley and funded by Oakland County, Michigan.
Project DIAMOnD was developed in October 2020 to accelerate digital transformation among Michigan manufacturers. In Phase I of the program, which was funded by $10 million from Oakland County and $2 million from Macomb County, Automation Alley distributed 300 3D printers to small- and mid-size manufacturers at no cost, provided workforce training, and networked the printers to be used to fulfill emergency orders at scale.
In 2021, the network concept was validated, as it printed and shipped 8,000 tourniquet parts to fulfill a request from the Ukrainian Defense Ministry. The parts allowed for the assembling of more than 2,600 tourniquets to help those in need of medical assistance during the Russian assault on Ukraine.
Q: Project DIAMOnD recently opened a Digital Transformation Center in Auburn Hills. Can you tell us more about this?
Of course! It provides companies access to industrial 3D printing equipment, training and support. The new Digital Transformation Center (DTC) is supported by Geofabrica, an Auburn Hills, Michigan business that specializes in the development of custom 3D printing systems and processes for industrial applications. Through the DTC, Project DIAMOnD companies will have access to additive manufacturing courses, a team of experts, and access to additional 3D printers to test and make products.
Q: Wow, so this center is really helping to transform the region and state into a magnet for advanced manufacturing and training. What can companies learn at this center?
At the Digital Transformation Center, Project DIAMOnD participants will learn how to transform their businesses from a capital and process-based mindset to a design and intellectual property mindset facilitated by 3D printing. This encompasses having an opportunity to launch and validate products before investing in industrial additive manufacturing equipment. They will also retain access to 3D print and post-process products, without the burden of owning and operating complex equipment.
Q: What else does the DTC provide?
Beyond 3D printing equipment, the DTC will provide access to industrial 3D scanners and advanced modeling and measurement software. Companies will also be able to upload and order parts through the DTC.
Q: What companies are eligible to use the center? How can companies get involved in Project DIAMOnD?
At this time, Project DIAMOnD is open exclusively to small- and medium-sized companies located in Oakland County. However, if you're outside Oakland County, don't hesitate to apply! We're keen to gauge interest and may expand the program to your area in the future.
Don't Miss Out on the Future of Manufacturing! Sign Up Now for Exclusive Access to:
· State-of-the-Art 3D Printing Technology.
· Comprehensive Training Programs Tailored to Your Needs.
· Instant Connection to Our Vast Network of Industry Leaders.

You were a Michigan 50 company to Watch in 2011. How has being an awardee of Michigan Celebrates impacted your business?
Thank you for being a sponsor of MCSB. Can you tell me why you continue to give back to support small businesses across the state?
What’s new from Short’s that the audience can look for (anticipate) in the upcoming year?
Way back in 2004…
Joe Short opened the Pub in a renovated hardware store in Bellaire, Michigan (population 1,200), the heart of Antrim County, deep in rural Northern Michigan.
Soon after, Leah joined the team. She and Joe fell in love, and while following their favorite band created our Ween-inspired menu. Since then, The Pub has grown to include five storefronts (including our own store and private dining space, The South End) and during the summer season, we’ve been known to crank out 800 pizzas a day.
