The MMHP in the 989 sat down with Mike Richards in the summer of 2024, with lead singer and guitarist of ADABOY!, a group that has spanned the past decade with growth and adjustment moving around players and parts, as well as songs and styles, to create one of Mid-Michigan's burgeoning bands that have recorded albums from Bay City to Nashville. Richards has spoken about releasing singles, pulling down past albums in focus of their new management and progression in the industry, and staying true to not one style, but positivity in his music. Following his heart. In episode one, Richards gave us his past to present, with a new drummer on the horizon, wanting to issue singles as the months go by. We will update his story in part 2 in two weeks--showing the true projection and reflection of a band in action, growth, and its relationships with its fans. Richards spills the info on his life, mental illness, and his desire to be an assistant to society's growth, rather than be a negative flash-in-the-pan. Tune into Episode 1 of 2, NOW....

The original Count--Butch Burden is still thumping the bass and singing the songs. Count & The Colony were the up-and-coming band in the mid-60s, hitting the road with Question Mark & The Mysterians, as well flagging shared management with Lilly Gonzales, touring in the Count's teen years. The road was no stumbling block, providing city-to-city exposure, parties, and dedication to craft which remains to this day. Then the money dried up. A Tangerine Records contract with the Ray Charles Estate included four originals that have never been released. Burden took his rich vocals, showmanship, and musical drive back home to Mid-Michigan where he continues to reside, 60 years later. His shows are documented in this two-part series through time, story, and epic detail. The bands that he jammed with, the music he created, and the longing to continue to be in a cover oriented group, Count & The Change, giving him a lifetime as a musician. Here in Part 2 of 2, Butch dives into the hotel residencies with Amphagas that put the spotlight on the band with the likes of Elvis, Led Zeppelin, Little River Band, George Benson, Liza Minelli, and moments with Robert Plant and Patti LaBelle that made up fantastic memories. We would like to thank Butch's wife Cindie for assisting in bringing archives and reminding Butch of memories along the way. Part 2 of 2 is ready to serve now in the MMHP in the 989!

Mid-Michigan's Boss Hog of the blues, your #1 Blues Man, Larry McCray returns to the music bins and online lists with his second helping from the Josh Smith/Joe Bonamassa production stall on June 13, with Heartbreak City. The KTBA Records follow up to 2022's Blues Without You brings McCray back to his roots and offers more than a glimpse of vocal power, delivery, and searing solos that have been his trademark for his illustrious career, nearing 50 years, 35 on the professional circuit as a household name. Larry stopped by the MMHP989 Studio inside of the Michigan Rock Legends Hall of Fame in Downtown Bay City to give the early word in February on his recording trip to Los Angeles with the team last fall. At the time of this interview, 12 songs were recorded. 10 made the final cut and one of the two cut are a bonus digital download for the streaming services. Bye Bye Blues is already hitting the airwaves and McCray is in the midst of working up tour plans, based around his health and the annual Fall tour with Devon Allman/Allman Betts team that he has been on for three years. McCray takes the team behind the scenes for the writing of Heartbreak City with Peggy Smith, Charlie Walmsley, Josh Smith, as well as MMHP's own Scott Baker, the forward momentum he has been rolling with after getting a blues resurgence over the past few years, and of course tips his cap with great stories about meeting and playing with blues legends such as BB King, Albert King, Johnny Winter, Joe Bonamassa, and the Allman Brothers Family, amongst others. Get your blues on Michigan Music Fans, Brother Larry is back to sing you the blues and bring it on home!
So many music fans want to be in the time capsule, jump back and be present when the music not only started, but to be a fly on the wall and absorb the scents, the colors, the sounds, the discussions, the drugs, the sex, debauchery, the arguments, heartbreaks and everything just to separate the myth from the history. Miss Barbara Bacon was the 17 year old on the scene, taking it all in and living to tell all about it. The Stooges, Ted Nugent, Mark Farner, Mc5, Bob Seger, The Who at the Holiday Inn Flint, Alice Cooper, Pete Andrews, Craig Frost, Twiggy, SRC, Michael Bruce...just a smear of the stories she has from backstage, homesteads, and hotels, to long trips, joint-sharing, bi-sexual reality, and the front row ticket to every event. Barbara has submitted Stooges and other artwork to the Michigan Rock Legends Hall of Fame and now has decided to do the ULTIMATE name drop and recall all her unreal stories. However, don't call her a groupie, she sat shotgun, witnessed and made wise decisions not to partake in the private world, while her older sister Carolyn and friends reaped fringe benefits. Barbara is a walking encyclopedia of Detroit, Pontiac, Ann Arbor and the world of rock and roll, via mid to late '60s and beyond. From Mitch Ryder to Mt. Holly--these are her stories. Part two of two here adds festival stories, Jackie Wilson, Jeep Holland and more. Barbara draws out stories from Dr. J and Sir Fred as well. Tune in for the big finale--now!

You've heard of the best drummer in the world, best rock, best jazz, best percussionist, etc. Did you know Michigan is home to the best blues drummer in world? Steve McCray, youngest brother to national treasure Larry, has been hitting the skins since the '70s and continues to provide his sonic element to the Michigan scene and beyond. Known as the First Unk Of Funk, McCray's background of P-funky, Isley Brothers, and hard blues has given him a craft that is truly his own blend. McCray also adds songwriting, production, and incredible background harmonies/arrangements that have helped propel his Brother Larry's music and other Michigan Bands over the top. Steve has no problem dishing the backstage stories or the truth and details of life on the road and in the studio. Where has the time gone?!! We began coming straight out of the Covid closures in the back of Alan Garcia's garage podcast studio in Essexville in February of 2021. Now we fire up in our new comfy confines of the Bay City Historical Museum Second Floor where the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends displays can be witnessed. When we first moved to the Museum, you could hear us trying areas, tables, spaces. Now we have our own 'couch relaxed' room, boom mic'd and offering even more quality as our MMHP989 brand continues to expand by word of mouth from music lover to music lover, musician to musician, fan to DJ, author to Podcaster. We are 118 episodes deep according to Apple Podcasting--sounds about right! Because of YOU listeners and our first class guests, we are getting requests from more music legends now to help tell their story and be featured on our show. As we roll into year four, we plan to expand the horizons and look at our show from other angles. The best is yet to come! In our four year catch up, Dr. J dishes out the details behind our new first class operation, discusses state of the state of the amazing Michigan Rock Hall (have you visited it yet?), we talk about our joy of the show and how its reached beyond the state of Michigan, and we get a deep dive into an artist whom has passed away from Saginaw, songwriter Bob Buchanan who wrote the great Hickory Wind with the late Gram Parsons while on a train, members of the International Submarine Band. Told only as Sir Fred can, bruises and all! We are lucky to have this outlet for this story--so stick around for it. Sit back and celebrate our Fourth Anniversary with the MMHP989!
Gary Taylor is not the average 'roll out the barrel' or 'oberek' artist. Performing state wide with some regional trips since the 1960s, Taylor found himself in great company while at Handy High School in the early '60s. Able to play saxophones and clarinet, Taylor was a first call artist, getting gigs and rubbing elbows with many of the Michigan polka legends. Taylor ran his own band coming out of the Pat Lepeak and The Starliners as the '70s progressed, headlining polka festivals and achieving freedom as a multi-talented bandleader. Always in search of 'better mixes' and perfect 'lathe cut vinyl' for his projects, Taylor was able to release one collectible 45 as a headliner as Gary Taylor & The Happy Knights. His stories start at the Art Schiell home recording studio (which ? & The Mysterians put on the map). From there, he ventured to Detroit and around studio to studio, cutting parts and searching for his sound. Having hung up his woodwinds in the '90s, Taylor is an audiophile, listening to all types of music, and reveling in the perfect polka sounds. This is his story...

John Woolard's father Dwayne is one Michigan's first fore-fathers of country music, having been a pianist for all the Nashville and Mid-West names and albums. John himself started out with high school bands leading him to a short stint in Til Tuesday while in Florida. That road led to Nashville, both studio and touring. Coming back to Michigan and joining the armed forces along the way, Woolard took the family story to the next level in various country bands and stints from here around the globe. Upon giving his life to Christ, Woolard's stage expanded, as did his repertoire. Woolard got signed to a label and took his sounds across the Christian tour trail. Woolard recently moved since this podcast, however he remains a man of music, as well as a Pastor in Michigan. This story is one of the deepest wells we have dove into. Tune in today!
