Description

On the Midnight Screening Podcast, co-hosts Eliza and Noah Janssen stay up past their bedtime to rot their brains with the very best (and the very worst) that genre cinema has to offer.

Whether it's comparing two films with some sort of tenuous connection on our double feature format episodes Twin Picks, diving deep into the the history of the genre with Midnight Marathons, or watching in awe/terror/confusion/annoyance at the biggest pieces of shit ever made in The Slop Bucket, there’s no film these creatures of the night aren’t ready to welcome into the family.

There's always time for one more movie...

We are HYPNOTISED, HAUNTED and HACK’D by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, whose unsettling Japanese thrillers are finally getting the Midnight Marathon treatment. Best of all - filmmaker, Kurosawa megafan and good buddy TYLER BAIN (@tyler.internet) is riding shotgun with us in the cloud-shrouded nightmare bus to hell! weeeeeeWe start with Kurosawa’s 1997 breakout CURE, a disorienting detective story with a stunning final shot and enough atmospheric scares to inspire the then-budding J-Horror movement. Then, as recently as last year, the director weaponised sinister internet communities to comment on societal sickness, in the darkly comic thriller CLOUD. Everybody needs an assistant Sano in their life.SHOW NOTES:Listen to Noah + Eliza on Tyler’s Triple R radio show Orange Juice right here! Who let the dogme out ?? Our fingers are aimed squarely at returning pals PARKER AND FLYNN of Sydney’s @underground.film.collective !! they let the dogme out !!Inspired by Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg’s ‘Vows of Chastity’ and how they can inform rawer, truer, more POWERFUL cinema, we get into the first (and probably best??) movie made in accordance with the Dogme 95 manifesto: Vinterberg’s dark, funny and provocative family reunion drama FESTEN/THE CELEBRATION.No script, lighting, non-diegetic music, ‘superficial action’ allowed !! Real shit only !!! Remembering David Stratton !!! Discussing the crabs-in-a-bucket phenomenon! Incredible conversational segues ! And ya maybe everybody didn’t watch second pick JULIEN DONKEYBOY, Harmony Korine’s crack at Dogme glory, but isn’t that so profoundly Dogme yknow ? Let the chaos wash over you like your seventh red wine at a disastrous family event…SHOW NOTES:CONTENT WARNING: The films we discuss in today's episode contain heavy themes of sexual assault, incest and abuse.Meaningful video of crabs in a bucketHarmony Korine on LettermanWerner Herzog on InstagramBADBADBAD.EXE files uploaded to our website:noonecametohisbirthdayparty.mp4~{findingxOxmyxOxbliss}~VISIT-OUR-WEBSITE = midnightscreeningproductions.comBecome ONE_OF_US here on PatreonINSTAGRAMFACEBOOKLETTERBOXDmidnightscreeningproductions@gmail.comSound: Anthony CarrArt: Kazuki KomatsuNEXT EPISODE = The Slop Bucket: ?? feat. Nice day for a white Weddington - i now pronounce u to be two fucked up, distressing, long and entertaining movies !! Noah has been destructively hyped for Zach Creggers’ sophomore feature WEAPONS since the first teaser dropped: a ‘horror epic’ depicting the aftermath of a bizarre disappearance from multiple townsfolk perspectives. but sometimes delayed gratification and mysterious marketing can work against a movie??Ari Aster’s fourth movie EDDINGTON is also about a small town gone violent n insane, but it seems Eliza and Noah find more to grapple with in its difficult comedy and social perspective. BOTH movies offer HEAPS of strong performances, scares and standout scenes worth grappling with. reach out, tell us what u thought and remember: YOUR BEING MANIPULATEDVISIT-OUR-WEBSITE = midnightscreeningproductions.comBecome ONE_OF_US here on PatreonINSTAGRAMFACEBOOKLETTERBOXDmidnightscreeningproductions@gmail.comSound: Anthony CarrArt: Kazuki KomatsuNEXT EPISODE = TITANIC QUIZ
We are so beyond breaking the fourth wall: in this pair of found footage horrors, the killers direct, write and star. Dw, neither Romanian indie BE MY CAT: A FILM FOR ANNE or scathing LA satire I BLAME SOCIETY are actual snuff films. They merely take us about as close as possible to one sick n twisted character’s vision of serial murder, whether sparked by Hollywood rejection or a deep fanboy love for Anne Hathaway.Noah and Eliza find both films to be funny, clever and creatively inspiring - in fact, this Twin Picks might be the only possible comfort, as the Midnight Screening website remains plagued by its own string of upsetting found footage videos under the label BADBADBAD.EXE. Stay tuned until the end of the episode to see if the pair can actually solve their glitchy problems by calling upon a higher…or perhaps lower…power.SHOW NOTES:BADBADBAD.EXE files uploaded to our website:noonecametohisbirthdayparty.mp4~*{findingxOxmyxOxbliss}*~TRIPLET IN THE ATTIC:Eliza: Rap World, dir. Sharks, zombies, uhhhh foster kids in peril: we saw em ALL on the BIG SCREEN. Not in the one movie but yknow…Noah and Eliza spill on three significant horror releases that have been in theatres lately, starting with the Philippou Bros. sophomore sad story BRING HER BACK. More like bring me back my freaking money what a depressing slog !! DANGEROUS ANIMALS is a far simpler, more entertaining beast, reminding us of why we love Aussie director Sean Byrne so much and triggering Noah’s lifelong fear of sharks. And then Danny Boyle’s return to the glitchy well of 28 YEARS LATER offers plenty to chew on, even if Eliza might have enjoyed it more than Noah did.Did you see any or all of these movies? YOU HAVE (1) FRIEND REQUEST: from Matt, scholar of all things scary and the creator of Instagram's @fright.fare , an Aussie account celebrating every aspect of horror cinema!!To ring in the launch of our own evil website launching, we're comparing two movies that are dubiously internet-based: 2002's FEARDOTCOM, a SE7EN ripoff that has cops uncovering a 3edgy5me snuff website, and 2005's CRY_WOLF, a SCREAM ripoff about a nasty chain email prank gone murderously wrong. The movies range from mid to mortifying, but the real fun lies in shootin the spooky breeze with Matt - comparing horror nerd origin stories, getting some stray movie recommendations, and figuring out just how the internet (and video store) damaged us each so irreversibly. yay !In other tech news: yes, the official Midnight Screening website is finally LIVE! Sammo enters the 1980s with a BANG - in our continuing celebration of a martial arts movie legend, we’re getting our first glimpses of Sammo Hung’s friendly rivalry with Jackie Chan, and his genre-making, hopping horror creativity. In the first ever “jiangshi” action movie Encounters of the Spooky Kind, shit gets scooby dooby and an insane final shot made us lose our minds. Then, Wheels on Meals is kind of an unofficial Mario bros buddy comedy (Yuen Biao and fight choreographer Chan!), with Sammo sporting a Jheri curl and directing the hell out of some truly painful-looking battles in Barcelona. It turns out our predictions for Hung’s hilarious blend of kung fu and gags were true: the guy just gets better and better. But can a Sammo Hung action-horror-comedy live up to our absurd expectations?? And what’s it like when he gets his hands on skateboards, motorbikes and food trucks for jaw-dropping chase scenes? From the transcendent Winkies diner jumpscare in Mulholland Dr. to nightmares of Bob in Twin Peaks, our guy David Lynch was a true master of horror when he wanted to be. That’s what we’re obsessed with in this third and final leg of our Lynch marathon: honing in on terror, in the director’s final, bewildering feature Inland Empire, and some of his eeriest artworks.Using (literally, gorily) raw materials and violent scenarios, Lynch’s mixed-media paintings show that his visual art can often be more strikingly obvious than his wonderful films - and, featuring Laura Dern in a career-best, multifaceted role, Inland Empire is certainly proof of that, too. It’s our last lunch with Lynch for now, but not forever - see ya in our dreams and nightmares!!SHOW NOTES:Paintings referenced:Boy Lights Fire Rat Meat Bird Change the Fuckin’ Channel Fuckface I Burn Pinecone and Throw In Your House SPECIAL EVENTEliza and friend of the pod Ivana (@avabanisher) are hostin a Twin Peaks season 1 marathon on April 5, celebrating the 35th anniversary of David Lynch’s seminal (and yes, SPOOKIE) show!! Raise a cup of black coffee to the sky and salute your fallen king: we’re deep diving into the dreams, nightmares and greatness of the late David Lynch. Starting with a focus on the director’s sense of humour, Noah and Eliza ride with Nicolas Cage and Laura Dean in Wild At Heart, Lynch’s racy Palme d’Or winner about lovers on the run across the South. Then an assortment of Lynchian shorts are up next, including the first moving picture her ever made (Six Men Getting Sick Six Times), the last film project he ever made (What Did Jack Do?), and one of our favourite fucked-up cartoon series we’ve ever seen (DumbLand). We really miss this bloke and his wild vision and his gorgeous hair—and we’re not interested in doing a Greatest Hits run in our memorial. Then, Spanish dark comedy The Day of the Beast offers up a perverted Nativity story, with a priest, a TV psychic and a satanist metalhead playing wise men who must stop the birth of the Antichrist on Christmas Day.Both movies are solid, scary, and a great way to wash all that sentimental family reunion crap from the holidays outta ur brain. Noah, Eliza and Anthony kick off a Christmas horror edition of Midnight Marathon with Christmas Evil (1980) and Silent Night Deadly Night Part 2 (1987) - two movies about an unhinged Santa taking their yuletide trauma out on those they deem ‘naughty’. Thing is, the first movie is a bonafide cult classic, loved by John Waters and featuring a tremendous lead performance from Fiona Apple’s dad (??!!). The second movie is an insane feat of feature-film recycling, and one of the worst lead performances we’ve ever seen.
